Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

It belongs to the Lethrinops group of open-water haplochromines — slender, silvery fish with an oblique, protrusible mouth built for sifting invertebrates out of sand rather than scraping algae off rock, the niche that defines the mbuna. The name refers to a yellow band across the nape and upper operculum that breeding males show, set against the more muted grey-blue body typical of the genus. It has been recorded at scattered localities spanning much of the length of the Malawian shoreline, from Masimbwe Island in the north to Harbour Island in the south. No authority, publication year, FishBase number, or Red List status exists for this form.

Taxonomy & naming

Lethrinops sp. "Yellow Collar" has no formal scientific description. It carries no describing author, no type specimen, and no entry of its own in Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes; the quoted name is an informal field/trade label, not a valid binomial, and should never be cited with an authority or a year. The genus Lethrinops was erected by Regan in 1922 and substantially revised by Eccles and Trewavas in their 1989 classification of the Malawian haplochromine genera, which recognised dozens of species defined mainly by mouth shape, scale counts and male breeding colour — characters that are notoriously difficult to separate in the field without a specimen in hand. “Yellow Collar” sits within that unresolved residue: a population recognisable by its male nuptial pattern and reported from several localities, but never formally diagnosed against its closest described relatives. Until a taxonomic revision examines voucher material from these sites, the safest and most honest position is that this is a distinct, named-in-the-hobby population of uncertain formal affinity within Lethrinops.

Morphology

Like other Lethrinops, this form has the genus’s characteristic elongated, fusiform body and a mouth set low and angled slightly downward, protrusible for working the sand. Field and hobby reports place adult males at roughly 4–5 in, with females somewhat smaller — genus-typical figures rather than a measurement taken from a formal description, since none exists. The diagnostic feature is the male’s breeding dress: a band of yellow across the nape and upper gill cover, contrasting with a silvery blue-grey body and, in many individuals, faint vertical barring down the flanks. Non-breeding males and females are plain silver with little pattern, the standard camouflage of sand-dwelling haplochromines away from the breeding grounds. No formally published character separates this population from similarly patterned Lethrinops elsewhere in the lake; the collar colour and the collection localities are what identify it in practice.

Habitat

Lethrinops sp. "Yellow Collar" has been recorded at several sites strung along the Malawian shore, from Masimbwe Island in the northern lake down through Chiofu and Liwani to Harbour Island in the south — a distribution wide enough that it may represent more than one true population sharing a similar male colour pattern rather than a single continuous stock. Like other sand-dwelling Lethrinops it lives over open sand, typically the transitional zone between rocky shoreline and clean sand or the deeper sand slopes further out, rather than among rocks themselves. Lake Malawi’s water column at these depths is warm, hard and alkaline — broadly 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6 — and this form is reported from moderate depths on the sand, roughly the 26–98 ft range typical of the genus rather than the shallows favoured by mbuna.

Feeding

This is a sand-sifting invertivore in the manner typical of Lethrinops. It patrols just above the substrate and, on finding a promising patch, takes a mouthful of sand, filters it through comb-like gill rakers to strain out small invertebrates — chironomid larvae, ostracods, copepods and other benthic micro-fauna — and expels the spent sand through the gills and mouth. The oblique, protrusible mouth of Lethrinops is built for exactly this kind of close, angled work along the sand surface, distinct from the algae-scraping dentition of the rock-dwelling mbuna. No diet study specific to this population exists, so the account here follows the well-documented feeding mode of the genus as a whole.

Mating

As in other Lethrinops, males are expected to be non-territorial outside the breeding season but to establish and defend a small display site on open sand once in colour, some species excavating a shallow pit or a low sand mound that the male maintains and displays from. There is no pair bond; the social system is lek-like, with females moving between the coloured males scattered across a patch of sand and choosing where to spawn. A male in his yellow-collared breeding dress signals readiness to any female that approaches, and courtship follows the standard haplochromine sequence of quivering and circling that precedes spawning. Specific behavioural observations of this named form have not been published; the above reflects the pattern documented for the genus.

Breeding

Lethrinops sp. "Yellow Collar" is, like every member of its genus, a maternal mouthbrooder. Spawning takes place on the open sand at or near the male’s display site; the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth immediately after laying and carries them there through development. Brooding in Lethrinops generally runs three to four weeks, during which the female feeds little if at all, before she releases a batch of free-swimming fry able to fend for themselves. There is no male or biparental care beyond fertilisation. Clutch size has not been documented for this specific population; related sand-dwelling species typically produce clutches in the range of a few dozen eggs, scaling with the size of the female.

In the aquarium

Lethrinops sp. "Yellow Collar" is a peaceful, sand-associated cichlid by the standards of the lake — far less combative than the rock-dwelling mbuna it shares a shoreline with — and is best kept in that spirit. A soft sand substrate at least 2 in deep over a generous open floor is essential, since sifting behaviour is central to how the fish forages and stays occupied; coarse gravel prevents natural feeding and can abrade the gills. A tank of at least 47 in gives room for a trio or small group, kept as one male with several females to spread his attention and reduce harassment.

Water should mirror Lake Malawi’s chemistry: temperature around 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6, and moderately hard to hard general hardness, with soft or acidic conditions avoided. Diet should include fine sinking pellets alongside small live or frozen invertebrates such as chironomid larvae, daphnia and brine shrimp, offered over the sand to encourage the fish’s natural sifting behaviour. Because the form is undescribed and its wild range poorly resolved, keepers who acquire it should record and preserve the collection locality rather than mixing stock from different sites.

Conservation

No IUCN Red List assessment exists for Lethrinops sp. "Yellow Collar", and none can until it receives a formal description — the Red List evaluates named, valid taxa. No status, category or year should be attached to it. More broadly, sand-dwelling Lethrinops across Lake Malawi face pressure from inshore trawling and seine-net fisheries, which take sand-associated haplochromines as bycatch far more than they take rock-dwelling mbuna, and from the sedimentation that follows catchment deforestation. Whether this particular form represents a narrow-range population or a wider-ranging one spanning the several sites where it has been recorded is not resolved, and any claim about its conservation status beyond “unassessed” would be unsupported.
