Taxonomy & naming
Maylandia melissa was described in 2023 by Jay R. Stauffer Jr. and Adrianus F. Konings, in a paper in Zootaxa treating a geographically variable, elongate rock-dwelling cichlid from Lake Malawi. The type locality is Chitande Island on the north-western (Malawian) shore. The description's central move was a consolidation: it gathered four forms that hobbyists and the earlier literature had treated as separate 'species' — Maylandia sp. 'elongatus bee', 'elongatus chailosi', 'elongatus chewere' and 'elongatus matambukira' — into the single species melissa, on the grounds that the females and non-adult males of the four are indistinguishable and the differences are male-colour variation rather than species boundaries.
The genus name carries a long-running nomenclatural dispute. The species was described in Metriaclima, the genus Stauffer and Konings coined in 1997 (Greek for 'moderately sloping,' for the head profile). But Maylandia — named in 1984 by Meyer, Riehl and Zetzsche for the German aquarist and author Hans-Joachim Mayland — is the older name and the senior synonym under the priority rule. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, this atlas's authority for valid names, lists the fish as valid under Maylandia melissa and treats Metriaclima as a synonym; that is the usage here, though the original description and most hobby sources use Metriaclima melissa. Within the genus melissa belongs to the elongate, rock-dwelling group rather than the deeper-bodied zebra forms.
Morphology
Maylandia melissa is a comparatively slender, elongate mbuna — the body form that earned its component populations the hobby tag 'elongatus.' Territorial males reach about 4.5 in and females are slightly smaller, around 4 in. The body is more drawn-out than the deep-bodied zebra Maylandia, with the moderately sloped head and bicuspid outer-row teeth of the genus.
Colour is the diagnostic — and deliberately variable — trait. Territorial males show a dark base colour carrying stripes that run from blue to yellow along the flanks, with a yellow dorsal fin and yellow caudal fin each finished in a black border. The exact tone and pattern differ between the four constituent forms (bee, chailosi, chewere, matambukira), which is why they were once read as separate species. Females, by contrast, are uniform across the whole complex — grey and striped, and slightly smaller than the males. It was precisely this indistinguishability of the females and immatures that led Stauffer and Konings to treat the lot as one species with locally variable males.
Habitat
Maylandia melissa is a Lake Malawi endemic of the north-western shore, ranging across roughly 7 mi of coast from Chewere to Chirwa Island and taking in localities such as Chitande Island, Chilumba Harbour, Katale Island and Matambukira Rocks. It is an intermediate-zone rock-dweller: it occupies habitat where rocks mix with sand at a range of depths, reported from roughly 5 to 40 metres. Non-breeding fish tend to stay shallower, while territorial males are often found deeper, where sandy substrate becomes more dominant — a vertical sorting by reproductive state.
The chemical setting is the standard Lake Malawi envelope: an ancient, strongly buffered rift lake with surface waters around 75–82 °F, alkaline pH of roughly 7.7–8.6, and moderate hardness, stable across the species' range.
Feeding
Maylandia melissa is an aufwuchs grazer in the mbuna mould, working the algal film on the rocks of its intermediate habitat. Like its congeners it combs loose diatoms and digestible algal strands from the matrix with its bicuspid outer teeth, and the elongate body suits an active, mobile foraging style over a mixed rock-and-sand bottom. No dedicated dietary study has been published for the species, but its membership in the rock-dwelling Maylandia and the habits of its component forms make it a typical algal-biofilm grazer with the usual scope to take small invertebrates and plankton opportunistically.
The practical consequence for aquarists is the familiar one for aufwuchs feeders: a long, plant-adapted gut that copes poorly with rich, high-protein animal foods, and a corresponding susceptibility to 'Malawi bloat.' A spirulina- and vegetable-based diet, supplemented only sparingly with animal matter, suits the species far better than meaty fare.
Mating
Breeding males of melissa are territorial, establishing and defending sites on the sandy substrate deeper in their range, away from the shallower water where non-breeding fish gather. The male advertises from his site in his locally distinctive striped breeding colour, displaying to females that move through the area, while females and immatures — drab and uniform across the complex — are mobile and cryptic.
No formal courtship study has been published, but the behaviour follows the standard haplochromine-mbuna sequence: the territorial male leads a receptive female to his site with lateral displays and shimmying movements, and spawning takes place there. Because males are colourful and site-attached while females are plain and mobile, mate choice is visual and territory-based, and the geographic variation in male colour across the four forms suggests locally divergent female preferences within the single species.
Breeding
Maylandia melissa is a maternal mouthbrooder, like all members of its genus. Spawning follows the classic mbuna sequence: the female lays eggs a few at a time and immediately takes them into her mouth, nosing at the egg-spots on the male's anal fin so that fertilisation happens at the mouth, repeating until the clutch is complete. She then broods the eggs and larvae buccally for roughly three weeks, feeding little, before releasing the free-swimming fry.
Hobby accounts of the constituent forms put clutch size on the order of twenty eggs, in line with similarly sized mbuna, and report the species as a straightforward harem breeder in aquaria. The male plays no role after fertilisation, and in the wild the released fry receive no further parental care. In the aquarium the cycle replicates readily once a settled male and conditioned females are present; the comparatively large fry accept crushed flake immediately, and moving a brooding female to a quiet rearing tank improves survival in a busy community.
In the aquarium
The fish now called Maylandia melissa has a longer aquarium history than its 2023 description suggests, because its four component forms — bee, chailosi, chewere and matambukira — have circulated in the hobby for years under the 'elongatus' label. They are kept as colourful, active, locality-specific mbuna, and the practical advice for melissa is to maintain and breed each form as a separate line rather than mixing them, so the distinct male colours are preserved.
A tank of around 65–80 US gal (a base length of about 4 ft) suits a harem of one male with three or four females, with larger groups possible in correspondingly larger aquaria. Water should be hard and alkaline in the Lake Malawi mould — pH around 8, temperature roughly 73–82 °F, moderate to hard general hardness (around 12–16 °dGH) — kept stable with a crushed-coral or aragonite substrate, strong filtration and regular generous water changes; soft, acidic water is unsuitable.
Provide sand with rock piles and caves, reflecting the rock-and-sand habitat the fish uses. As with the genus, melissa is aggressive toward conspecific males, so keep a single male and choose robust tankmates of contrasting colour so he does not mistake them for rivals. Diet should be spirulina- and vegetable-based to respect the aufwuchs-grazing gut and avoid bloat — the most common keeping mistake across the guild — with only sparing use of richer foods such as brine shrimp or krill.
Conservation
Maylandia melissa has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no Red List status, which is unsurprising for a species only formally named in 2023 — well after the 2018 Lake Malawi assessments. Its component forms were previously catalogued informally rather than evaluated as a unit. This is recorded here honestly as Not Evaluated rather than inferred.
In conservation terms, melissa is a single-shore endemic of the north-western lake, but with a meaningful footing: it spans roughly 7 mi of coast and several named localities, and consolidating four former 'species' into one actually widens its recognised range and reduces the apparent rarity of each form. Even so, it remains a narrow-range rock-and-sand endemic, and its habitat is exposed to the familiar regional pressures of catchment deforestation, sediment and nutrient loading, and growing fishing activity. These sit within Lake Malawi's broader trajectory — basin-scale reviews such as Chavula et al. (2023) in the Journal of Great Lakes Research document those threats together with climate-driven warming that weakens the lake's seasonal mixing. A formal assessment of melissa under its new, consolidated definition would be a reasonable next step.
