Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Cynotilapia sp. "Chinyankwazi" is a small rock-dwelling mbuna endemic to Chinyankwazi Island and the neighbouring Chinyamwezi Island in the south-eastern arm of Lake Malawi. Among the conical-toothed Cynotilapia it stands out for being unusually large — males reach 4.5 in — and for the intensity of its blue-black barring, which keepers consistently describe as one of the most striking colour patterns the genus produces. It remains scientifically undescribed despite decades in the hobby, recognised by Konings and documented on malawi.si under the provisional open-nomenclature designation Cynotilapia sp. 'chinyankwazi'.

Taxonomy & naming

Cynotilapia sp. 'Chinyankwazi' is an undescribed species. It carries no valid binomial and has never been formally described in the scientific literature; it exists only under open nomenclature. The form first appeared in print — with no taxonomic standing — as Cynotilapia 'chinyankwazi' in the landmark 1983 survey of Lake Malawi's rocky-shore cichlids by Ribbink, Marsh, Ribbink and Sharp, published in the South African Journal of Zoology. That survey gave provisional vernacular names to many undescribed forms to allow communication between researchers and hobbyists, explicitly stating that such names carry no taxonomic validity. The name stuck, and it appears in genetics literature (Kassam et al. 2005, African Journal of Biotechnology) as Cynotilapia sp. 'chinyankwazi', where phylogenetic analysis placed it as sister to Cynotilapia sp. 'chinyamwezi' within the genus. Patrick Tawil wrote a species profile under the same provisional open-nomenclature designation for the Cichlid Room Companion in 2013, and Ad Konings documents the form on malawi.si. As of 2026, the Eschmeyer Catalog of Fishes returns no record for any species combining this fish into a valid described taxon — it has not been formally described and possesses no valid authority. The name 'Stauffer & Kellogg, 2002' is sometimes encountered in trade contexts in connection with this fish, but the 2002 paper by those authors in Copeia (2002(1):146–151) described Pseudotropheus galanos from the Pseudotropheus williamsi complex — an entirely different fish. That attribution is erroneous and should not be used. Until a formal description is published in a peer-reviewed journal, this fish must be cited in open nomenclature as Cynotilapia sp. 'chinyankwazi', with Ribbink et al. (1983) credited for the first use of the name. It belongs to the genus Cynotilapia Regan, 1922, diagnosed by the widely spaced, unicuspid, canine-like outer jaw teeth that distinguish it from the bicuspid-toothed mbuna such as Maylandia and Tropheops. The informal epithet 'chinyankwazi' is a toponym for the island at the type locality.

Morphology

By the standards of the conical-toothed Cynotilapia, this is a large fish. Ad Konings's field observations, summarised on malawi.si, give males up to 4.5 in total length and females typically up to 3.5 in — making it noticeably bigger than the closely related Cynotilapia afra (whose FishBase maximum is 4 in SL) and comparable in heft to some forms of Cynotilapia zebroides. The body plan is the typical mbuna shape: moderately elongated and laterally compressed, with a slightly rounded forehead and a straight to gently decurved dorsal profile. The diagnostic genus character is in the jaws: the outer teeth are large, widely spaced, and unicuspid — true canines in the aquatic sense — rather than the close-packed bicuspid combs of a grazing mbuna. Sexual dimorphism is strongly developed and entirely about colour. Males in full dress are vivid sky-blue to electric blue overlaid with bold, dark vertical bars; the dorsal fin carries a pale margin; the overall effect is one of high contrast and saturation. Females are plain silvery-grey to brownish, superficially similar to females of related species and identifiable in the field mainly by association with males of known provenance. The malawi.si notes that older dominant females may take on a pale blue wash, but never match the intensity of a displaying male. No egg-spots are currently documented in the literature, though as a maternal mouthbrooder (see Breeding) the pattern is consistent with their presence on the anal fin.

Habitat

Cynotilapia sp. 'chinyankwazi' is a narrow-range lacustrine endemic. Konings's field records (summarised on malawi.si) place it at Chinyankwazi Island and Chinyamwezi Island in the south-eastern arm of Lake Malawi, with additional reports from Chinyamwezi Reef; no confirmed occurrences are known from the main body of the lake or the Tanzanian or Mozambican shores. The islands lie in the south-eastern arm of the lake, wholly within Malawi's waters. Within this micro-range the fish occupies rocky habitat with a preference for medium-sized rocks at 33–66 ft depth, but it ranges from as shallow as 10 ft down to at least 131 ft — an unusually wide vertical band for a mbuna. Like all Cynotilapia, it never strays far from the structural complexity of the rocky reef; the rock face is its territory, feeding patch, and refuge. The lake water around these islands is the characteristically hard, clear, alkaline water of Lake Malawi: pH typically 7.7–8.6, surface temperatures 75–82 °F (cooler in the deep zones the fish also uses), and conductivity in the range of 210–260 µS/cm. These are some of the most stable freshwater conditions on Earth — the lake's volume damps seasonal variation, so the fish has evolved in a narrow chemical envelope.

Feeding

The species is an omnivore whose diet tracks its social status, as is characteristic of the planktivorous Cynotilapia lineage. Non-territorial individuals — females and sub-adult or roving males — feed primarily on zooplankton and phytoplankton suspended above and off the rock face, picking particles from open water with the widely spaced canine teeth that are morphologically better suited to that plucking action than to combing algae. Territorial males, pinned to a patch of rocks by their reproductive duties, supplement this with aufwuchs — the biofilm of algae, diatoms, detritus, and invertebrates that coats the rocks — grazed from the surfaces they defend. This dual feeding mode, conditional on social status, is documented for the genus by Konings and is reflected on the malawi.si profile for this form. The practical implication for keepers is the same as for Cynotilapia generally: the fish is not a carnivore, and a high-protein diet can cause the bloat (Malawi bloat, likely related to Hexamita and dietary protein overload) that is the leading cause of death in mbuna. A spirulina-based diet with vegetable supplement suits the natural trophic profile.

Mating

Cynotilapia sp. 'chinyankwazi' is a polygynous harem breeder in the typical mbuna mould. Males establish and defend territories among the rocks, using the cave entrances and crevices between medium-sized boulders as the nucleus of their territory and as the site for spawning. Defence is intense: malawi.si notes strong aggression toward conspecifics, especially between males. A single dominant male will court several females in sequence, initiating each spawning bout with the standard haplochromine ritual — circling, fin displays, and the egg-spot mimicry on the anal fin that prompts the female to mouth at the fin and thereby take the milt into her buccal cavity where the eggs already sit. Females are smaller, plainly coloured, and move between territories to spawn when ripe. The social structure that naturally results is a loose polygynous arrangement: one male, several females, with no pair bond and no male parental investment. In the aquarium this translates to the standard mbuna management approach — one male to a group of three or more females in a tank large enough (minimum 80 US gal; malawi.si recommends larger for long-term success) that no single female bears the constant attention of the male. Keepers are warned by malawi.si against mixing this fish with closely related Cynotilapia species or zebra-type Metriaclima, as the risk of hybridisation is high.

Breeding

Like all Cynotilapia, this species is a maternal mouthbrooder. Spawning takes place in or around the male's rocky cave territory, and the female immediately takes the fertilised eggs into her buccal cavity. She broods alone — there is no male involvement in incubation — for approximately three weeks, during which she eats little or nothing and stays close to shelter. At the end of the brooding period she releases free-swimming fry, which are then on their own; there is no post-release guarding. Clutch sizes are consistent with the fish's modest dimensions: malawi.si data for the closely related forms suggest small clutches, and keepers' reports are in line with the dozen-to-thirty-egg range typical of small mbuna, though exact counts for this form have not been published in the literature. In the aquarium the species breeds readily under the right conditions: hard, alkaline water (pH in the upper 7s to mid 8s, with generous carbonate hardness), temperatures around 75–81 °F, and a rockwork layout offering the male a genuine territory. The greatest practical difficulty is ensuring the female is not harassed out of holding — a common problem in mbuna tanks — which is managed by providing plenty of visual breaks in the aquascape and maintaining an appropriate sex ratio. The fry are not difficult to raise on fine crushed spirulina flake and nauplii once released.

In the aquarium

Cynotilapia sp. 'Chinyankwazi' is rarely kept in the hobby. It circulates in small numbers through the specialist mbuna trade — a forum thread and a handful of hobbyist reports confirm that trios and groups do occasionally reach keepers — but it is far less commonly available than Cynotilapia afra or the more widely collected Metriaclima and Pseudotropheus species. Those who have kept it report that it demands nothing unusual by mbuna standards, but it does demand that those standards be met properly, and its somewhat larger size relative to many Cynotilapia means the margins for error in a cramped or poorly managed tank are narrower.

A tank of at least 80 US gal is the practical minimum for a group. The aquascape should be built almost entirely from stacked rockwork — large and medium-sized smooth or rough-edged rocks arranged to create a convincing reef face, with numerous caves, overhangs, and crevices at multiple levels. Open sand on the bottom is appropriate and consistent with the natural habitat; dense planting is neither natural nor particularly helpful, and plants will be uprooted by the digging that comes with territory-holding. The rock structures are not decoration; they are the entire basis of the fish's behavioural repertoire. Skimping on rockwork produces a stressed, hyper-aggressive colony that injures females.

Water chemistry must closely match the conditions of southern Lake Malawi: pH 7.8–8.6, temperature 75–82 °F, and high carbonate hardness (10–20°dKH is a reasonable target; crushed coral or aragonite substrate and a regular buffer regime will maintain this in most tap-water situations). Soft or acidic water produces chronic stress, poor colour, and susceptibility to disease. Conductivity in the lake around these islands runs roughly 210–260 µS/cm, and while keepers need not hit that precise figure, the overall hardness and alkalinity targets take priority. Efficient filtration and regular water changes — 25–30% weekly — are standard good practice; mbuna tanks are high-density by nature and the bioload is real.

A single male should be kept with three or more females. This is not optional: under-femaled groups result in the male directing constant aggression at one or two females, and a female held in a 300-litre tank with a territorial male and nowhere to escape will be run ragged and eventually killed. Line-of-sight breaks within the rockscape matter as much as the female count. Other tankmates, if any, should be chosen carefully. Other mbuna of similar size and water requirements are broadly compatible provided they are not closely related to this fish: sharing a tank with other Cynotilapia forms — particularly any form of Cynotilapia afra or Cynotilapia zebroides — risks hybridisation, which is a genuine concern given that this is a pure, undescribed, narrow-range form. Hobbyist literature consistently stresses keeping island-endemic Cynotilapia pure. Aggressive non-Cynotilapia mbuna of similar or larger size (large Melanochromis, dominant Petrotilapia) may bully or out-compete this species; peaceful open-water species such as Copadichromis or Aulonocara are generally too different in temperament and habitat preference to work well in a purely rock-focused layout.

Diet in captivity should reflect the species' natural trophic mode: spirulina-based staple flake or pellet as the core of the diet, supplemented with vegetable matter (blanched spinach, nori) and occasional live or frozen zooplankton such as daphnia or cyclops to satisfy the planktivore component. High-protein carnivore foods — particularly dried bloodworm in quantity — are associated with Malawi bloat in mbuna, and this species is no exception to that risk. The species breeds readily in a well-set-up tank once established. Maternal mouthbrooding proceeds as described above; the main keeper intervention is isolating the holding female in a separate tank or breeding trap in the final days before release, which prevents both harrassment of the female and loss of fry in a community setting. The species is not rated as difficult for an experienced mbuna keeper, but it is a poor choice for anyone new to hard-water African cichlids.

Conservation

Because Cynotilapia sp. 'chinyankwazi' is an undescribed form — absent from the Catalog of Fishes and carrying no valid binomial — it has no IUCN Red List assessment and no CITES listing. Its conservation status is therefore unknown in any formal sense; it falls into the large group of Lake Malawi cichlids that are traded and kept but have not been evaluated and cannot be evaluated under standard IUCN criteria until formally described. What is known from field observations is that its natural range is very small: two islands and a reef in the south-eastern arm of Lake Malawi. That kind of micro-endemism, characteristic of mbuna generally, makes any island-endemic inherently sensitive to localised threats. The lake itself is under documented and growing pressure. The basin-scale review by Chavula et al. (2023, Journal of Great Lakes Research) identifies fishery overexploitation, sedimentation from catchment deforestation, nutrient loading, and climate warming as the principal stressors. Warming-driven stratification reduces the mixing that fertilises the euphotic zone, and sedimentation — the runoff from cleared hillsides entering the lake as fine sediment — smothers the rocky-shore habitat that island endemics like this one depend on. A 2018 IUCN Red List reassessment of 458 Lake Malawi fish species found that nine per cent qualified as threatened, with overfishing and habitat degradation the primary drivers. None of this constitutes a specific documented threat to this particular form, but the general exposure of a narrow-range rocky-shore endemic to sedimentation and shoreline change is real, and the absence of a formal assessment should not be mistaken for an absence of risk. The ornamental trade does collect and sell this form, though at volumes below those affecting the more widely distributed mbuna; that trade represents both a potential pressure and, in the case of an undescribed form, a practical challenge to any population-level monitoring.
