Taxonomy & naming
Saxatilia britskii was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 1982, in the third part of his series "Cichlid fishes from the La Plata basin" (Revue Suisse de Zoologie, volume 89), the paper that defined the Crenicichla lepidota species group of small to medium pike cichlids. The holotype (MZUSP 16004) and a long series of paratypes were taken from a small brook at kilometre 143 of the BR-153 highway near Promissão, in the Rio Tietê system of São Paulo state, Brazil — the type locality and a tributary of the upper Paraná. The species epithet honours Dr Heraldo Antonio Britski, the Brazilian ichthyologist of the Universidade de São Paulo and its zoology museum (MZUSP) who collected and curated much of the material on which Neotropical cichlid taxonomy rests. Crenicichla is the largest and most widely distributed genus of Neotropical cichlids, and its internal classification has long been provisional; Kullander organised many of its members into informal "species groups" (saxatilis, lepidota, reticulata, and others) defined by body proportions, squamation and colour pattern, with britskii placed firmly in the lepidota group. That arrangement is now being formalised: Varella and colleagues (2023), revisiting the genus with molecular and morphological data, resurrected the genus Saxatilia for the lepidota-group pikes, so that Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes currently lists the valid name as Saxatilia britskii (Kullander, 1982). The combination Saxatilia britskii remains in near-universal use across FishBase, the older literature and the aquarium hobby, and is retained here as the primary name.
Morphology
Saxatilia britskii is a comparatively small, stocky pike cichlid. Reported maximum size varies with the source: FishBase lists 5.5 in standard length and a common length near 4.5 in, while regional faunal work in the upper Paraná floodplain (Graça & Pavanelli, 2007) records specimens to about 7 in SL — so a well-grown adult is roughly hand-length, modest by the standards of the genus's larger predators. The body is the elongate, cylindrical pike form typical of Crenicichla but relatively deep-bodied for the group, the greatest depth going about 3.2 to 3.9 times into the standard length, with a large terminal mouth and several rows of small teeth on the premaxilla and dentary. Meristics from the original description and later revisions give a dorsal fin of XVI spines and 14 to 16 soft rays, an anal fin of III spines and 9 to 11 rays, and a longitudinal scale series of 33 to 40. The ground colour is greyish to greenish, the back crossed by dark-brown transverse bars; a dark suborbital stripe runs below the eye, and an often-faint dark longitudinal band stretches from the snout along the flank to the caudal peduncle. Two markings stand out as field characters: a black rounded humeral blotch on the shoulder, and a black ocellus (eyespot) ringed in pale tissue at the base of the caudal fin. The dorsal, anal and caudal fins carry scattered white spots, while the pectoral and pelvic fins are yellowish to hyaline. As in many pike cichlids the sexes differ subtly — ripe females are fuller in the body and frequently develop a flush of red or orange in the belly and a light-edged dorsal-fin patch, while males tend to grow larger; the difference is least obvious outside of breeding condition.
Habitat
Saxatilia britskii is endemic to the upper Paraná River basin of Brazil, in the Paraná drainage upstream of the great falls at Guaíra (the former Sete Quedas), and is recorded across the tributary systems of that basin — the Rio Tietê (its type locality), the Rio Aguapeí, the Paranaíba and others in the states of São Paulo, Goiás, Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul. Within the upper Paraná it is a fish of small to moderate watercourses as much as of the main river: it turns up in gallery-forest streams, in floodplain lakes and backwaters of the Paraná's vast inundation plain, and in the marginal, vegetated shallows where current slackens. The diet study by Gibran and colleagues, for example, sampled britskii from a second-order forest stream running through pasture in the Aguapeí basin, where the fish hunted among submerged vegetation, leaf litter and the streambed. These are warm, generally soft to moderately mineralized lowland waters; the upper Paraná runs warm year-round, with shallow-water temperatures broadly in the mid-twenties to around 29 degrees Celsius and circumneutral to slightly acidic chemistry, and as a benthopelagic stream and floodplain fish britskii occupies the shallow margins rather than deep open water. No precise depth range has been published for the species, but its documented habitats — shallow streams, vegetated lake edges and floodplain shallows — place it in roughly the upper one to two metres of the water column.
Feeding
Where many of the larger Crenicichla are dedicated piscivores, Saxatilia britskii is a generalist insectivore — a distinction established directly from wild gut contents. Gibran and colleagues examined twenty specimens from an Aguapeí-basin stream and found the diet dominated by aquatic insects, which made up about half (50%) of the food by volume and were mostly immature larval and nymphal forms; crustaceans accounted for roughly 14%, unidentified organic material and filamentous green algae about 11% each, and fishes and arachnids only around 7% each. The authors concluded that britskii is a generalist insectivore with a comparatively short digestive tract, taking autochthonous (locally produced) prey across a broad range of microhabitats — from the water column and surface to the streambed and the tangle of macrophytes and submerged plant debris. FishBase places its trophic level near 3.1, consistent with a mid-level predator that leans on invertebrates rather than fish. Functionally it is an ambush-and-pursuit hunter in the pike-cichlid mould — lying among cover, then lunging — but one whose flexible, insect-heavy diet lets it thrive in small streams that could not support a strict fish-eater. In the stream community it is a significant invertebrate predator and an occasional consumer of smaller fishes.
Mating
The reproductive behaviour of Saxatilia britskii has not been documented in detail in the wild or in print, but the pike cichlids of the lepidota group are consistent enough that the broad pattern is well understood. Like its congeners, britskii forms monogamous pairs that hold and defend a territory; pairing is preceded by mutual display, lateral spreading of the fins, and tests of strength, and an established pair cooperates in driving other fish away from the chosen site. Females in spawning condition advertise readiness through heightened belly colour — the reddish or orange flush typical of female pike cichlids — and through close circling of the male at the nest site. As with most Crenicichla, the bond can be volatile until the fish are well matched, and a poorly paired male and female may fight rather than spawn. The female takes the leading role at the eggs while the male patrols the wider territory, a division of labour shared across the genus.
Breeding
No formal account of spawning in Saxatilia britskii itself appears in the literature, so its breeding is inferred from the well-documented habits of the lepidota species group and of pike cichlids generally. Crenicichla are biparental cave or crevice spawners: the pair selects a sheltered cavity — a rock cleft, a hollow under wood or a root tangle, or an excavated burrow under cover — and the female attaches her eggs to the ceiling or wall of the chamber. Small lepidota-group pikes such as the closely related Crenicichla lepidota produce clutches on the order of a few hundred eggs (several hundred is typical for fish of this size). The female tends and fans the eggs inside the cave while the male guards the surrounding territory; after the eggs hatch, the wrigglers are moved to pits and the free-swimming fry are guarded and herded by both parents, retreating into cover when threatened. Brood care is extended by cichlid standards, the pair shepherding the young for some weeks until they disperse. In aquaria, pike cichlids of this type are reliably triggered by clean, warm water and a rich diet of live and frozen invertebrate foods, with a suitable cave (an inverted flowerpot or length of pipe) provided as a spawning site.
In the aquarium
Saxatilia britskii is not a commonly traded aquarium fish — it reaches South American hobbyists and specialist pike-cichlid keepers more often than the general trade — but it is a manageable subject, and as one of the smaller pikes (maturing around 3 in and topping out near 5.5–7 in) it is far less demanding of space than the metre-class members of the genus. A single fish or a compatible pair can be kept in a tank of roughly 47 in length (about 65–80 US gal); pairs need length and broken sightlines more than sheer volume. The aquascape should suit an ambush predator of vegetated streams and floodplain margins: a soft sand or fine-gravel substrate, generous cover in the form of driftwood, roots, rockwork and at least one or two enclosed caves (an inverted flowerpot or a section of pipe works well and doubles as a spawning site), and ideally some plants or leaf litter to break the line of sight and let a subordinate fish hide. Water should be warm and clean — about 24 to 29 degrees Celsius, pH on the soft, slightly acidic to neutral side (around 6.0 to 7.5) and moderate hardness — mirroring the warm lowland streams of the upper Paraná; pike cichlids are intolerant of accumulated waste, so efficient filtration and regular water changes matter. Feeding is straightforward given the wild diet: a varied menu of frozen and live invertebrates — bloodworm, mysis, brine shrimp, chopped earthworm, small crustaceans — readily accepted, with many specimens weaning onto quality sinking pellets. As a generalist insectivore rather than an obligate piscivore it does not require a constant supply of feeder fish, and feeders are best avoided on health grounds. On temperament, britskii is moderately aggressive and territorial in the pike-cichlid manner: it will not tolerate close-quarters crowding by conspecifics outside a bonded pair, and it will eat tankmates small enough to swallow, but it is not the relentless bruiser that the larger pikes can be. Robust, similarly sized characins, larger callichthyid catfish and other medium South Americans make reasonable companions in a spacious tank, while very small fish and shrimp are simply prey. The usual pitfalls are the genus-wide ones: pairing unmatched fish (which can turn lethal), undersized tanks that leave no escape from aggression, and poor water quality.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Saxatilia britskii as Least Concern, in an assessment carried out on 7 November 2018 and published in 2022 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and a large panel of Brazilian freshwater-fish specialists. The listing reflects a species that, while restricted to the upper Paraná basin, is distributed across a number of tributary systems and faces no specific population-level threat. It carries no CITES listing and is of no fishery interest. That said, the upper Paraná is one of the most heavily modified river basins in South America: an almost continuous cascade of large hydroelectric dams has fragmented and impounded the main river, the once-mighty Sete Quedas / Guaíra falls were drowned by the Itaipu reservoir, deforestation and agricultural runoff have degraded the small streams the species depends on, and the basin has been invaded by numerous non-native fishes. None of these is documented as endangering britskii in particular — as a flexible streamside generalist it is more resilient than the basin's narrow-range specialists — but they are the backdrop against which the long-term outlook for the upper Paraná's small native fishes should be read.
