Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Sciaenochromis sp. "Nyassae" is an undescribed predatory haplochromine from the south-central part of Lake Malawi, documented at Chidunga Rocks and Liwani. It belongs to a small genus best known for the electric-blue Sciaenochromis fryeri, and shares that genus's build: a torpedo-shaped ambush hunter of small fish. Its trade name borrows "nyassae," the Latinised form of Nyasa, the lake's former name — an epithet used for several genuinely described Malawi cichlids but applied here only as an informal field tag. It has no scientific name, no describing author, and no IUCN assessment.

Taxonomy & naming

Sciaenochromis sp. "Nyassae" is not a formally described species: it has no authority, no publication date, and no entry under a validated name in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The genus Sciaenochromis was erected by David Eccles and Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1989, part of the wholesale split of the old catch-all genus Haplochromis into dozens of narrower Malawi endemic genera, with the type species Sciaenochromis ahli (originally described as Haplochromis ahli by Trewavas in 1935). Only four species are currently accepted as formally described in the genus. The epithet "nyassae" is the Latinised genitive of Nyasa, the lake's former colonial name, meaning "of Lake Nyasa" — the same construction used for several genuinely described Malawi cichlids, including the peacock Aulonocara nyassae (Regan, 1922). Its use here is purely a field/trade label borrowed from that naming convention; it implies no relationship to Aulonocara nyassae or any other species carrying the same epithet, and no confirmed closest relative within Sciaenochromis has been established for this form.

Morphology

Sciaenochromis is a genus of medium-sized, fusiform, torpedo-shaped predatory haplochromines with a comparatively large mouth and roughly even to slightly projecting jaws — an ambush-hunter's build rather than that of a substrate grazer. "Nyassae" is expected to carry this genus-typical body plan. No formal morphometric description separates it from its relatives, and length has not been independently confirmed for this population; across the genus, described species range from about 4.5 in SL (S. fryeri) to roughly 8 in TL (S. ahli), and a mid-genus estimate is a reasonable placeholder. Colour has not been documented with confidence for this specific form. The genus-wide pattern — breeding males in intense metallic blue, often with a paler head blaze, against cryptic brown-grey females and non-breeding males crossed by 9-12 faint vertical bars — is presumed but not directly confirmed for "Nyassae."

Habitat

Chidunga Rocks and Liwani, the two documented localities, sit in the south-central part of Lake Malawi. Sciaenochromis as a genus favours the intermediate zone where rock and sand meet, hunting from cover with caves and crevices nearby rather than committing fully to either open rock or open sand; described relatives are recorded roughly in the 33–131 ft range in this kind of habitat. Water conditions match the lake generally: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Described relatives in the genus partition this intermediate zone by depth and cover: S. fryeri ranges widely across reefs the length of the lake, while the sand specialist S. psammophilus hovers over open sand well away from rock. Where "Nyassae" sits within that spectrum at Chidunga Rocks and Liwani has not been documented.

Feeding

Sciaenochromis is a genus of piscivores specialised in hunting small fish rather than grazing algae or sifting sand. Better-known relatives such as S. fryeri and S. ahli sit at a high trophic level for the Malawi flock, targeting juvenile cichlids and small mbuna; S. fryeri in particular has been documented using a mimicry strategy, adopting the head-down rocking posture of a harmless algae-grazer to approach prey before striking. "Nyassae" is presumed to be a small-fish ambush predator on the same general pattern, though no feeding study specific to this form has been published, and the mimicry behaviour documented in S. fryeri should not be assumed to apply here without direct observation.

Mating

No behavioural account exists for this specific form. Across the genus, breeding males in blue nuptial colour are typically only weakly to moderately territorial — Sciaenochromis fryeri in particular is described as holding ground loosely, sometimes constructing simple sand-pit "cave-crater" bowers against a large rock — and courtship follows the standard haplochromine sequence of display and quivering leading a receptive female to spawn. This account is inferred from the genus; no site-specific behaviour has been recorded for "Nyassae." Konings describes S. fryeri males as only weakly territorial by mbuna standards, sometimes gathering loosely around good spawning ground rather than fiercely contesting individual sites, and clashes between males rarely produce serious injury — a milder social pattern than in the rock-bound mbuna genera.

Breeding

Reproduction follows the universal Malawi haplochromine mode of maternal mouthbrooding. After spawning, the female takes the eggs into her buccal cavity and is drawn to fertilise them via the male's anal-fin egg-spot markings, then broods alone for roughly three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, with no paternal care. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; genus-typical figures for similarly sized Sciaenochromis run to several dozen eggs. Konings records a brooding period of roughly three weeks for S. fryeri, a figure used here as a genus-typical benchmark; no clutch count or brooding duration has been published specifically for "Nyassae," and captive breeding behaviour, if any has been recorded by hobbyists, has not entered the published literature.

In the aquarium

Unlike the ubiquitous Sciaenochromis fryeri, "Nyassae" is not an established aquarium fish and would reach keepers only as a rare, specifically labelled field collection. Where kept, it should follow the standard care template for a predatory, intermediate-zone Sciaenochromis: a tank of at least 49–59 in with open swimming space, rockwork and caves for females to retreat into, hard alkaline water around pH 7.7-8.6, and temperatures in the mid-70s to low-80s °F (75–81 °F). As a piscivore it should not be housed with fish small enough to be eaten, and — as with the genus generally — it should be kept apart from other blue Sciaenochromis forms, since the genus hybridises readily and mixed broods quickly erase the value of a documented locality line.

Conservation

Sciaenochromis sp. "Nyassae" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form without an available name, carries no Red List status of any kind — a statement about taxonomy, not about safety. The genus's described members are assessed Least Concern at the species level, reflecting broad distributions across the lake, and targeted aquarium collection is a minor pressure for the genus overall. The larger risk is lake-wide: sediment loading from deforested catchments, overfishing pressure on the broader fish community, and warming water all bear on every Lake Malawi endemic, this form included. The wider lake is under sustained pressure from overfishing, sediment and nutrient runoff from deforested catchments, and warming surface water that is strengthening thermal stratification — pressures that bear on every Lake Malawi endemic regardless of its taxonomic status.
