Taxonomy & naming
Sciaenochromis sp. "Spilostichus Deep-water" is not a formally described taxon: it has no authority, no publication date, and no entry under a validated name in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. Its name references a real and instructive piece of taxonomic history. Ethelwynn Trewavas described Haplochromis spilostichus in 1935; Eccles and Trewavas moved it into the newly erected genus Sciaenochromis in 1989; and it was subsequently removed again, this time to Mylochromis, in the revisions that followed Konings's 1993 work on Sciaenochromis and later treatment by Turner and Howarth — the valid combination today is Mylochromis spilostichus. This form's trade name keeps the old "Sciaenochromis" placement and the "spilostichus" tag, most likely because it was recorded and labelled before that transfer was widely adopted, or because collectors judged it superficially similar to the pattern once described under that name. Whether "Spilostichus Deep-water" is in fact conspecific with Mylochromis spilostichus, a related but distinct deep-water population, or an unrelated Sciaenochromis-type predator that merely resembles it, is genuinely unresolved, and this account makes no claim either way.
Morphology
The fish is built on the Sciaenochromis/predatory-haplochromine plan: an elongate, fusiform body suited to acceleration over open ground, a large mouth, and roughly even jaws. "Deep-water" in the name signals that this population is collected notably deeper than the typical Sciaenochromis intermediate-zone habitat. No morphometric study or confirmed length exists for this form specifically; a mid-to-large estimate, informed by the genus and by the historically related Mylochromis spilostichus (which reaches over 8 in TL), is used here as a placeholder rather than a documented figure. Colour has not been confirmed for this population. If the form does track the taxon that once carried the spilostichus name, breeding males would be expected to show the oblique row of dark spots running from nape to caudal peduncle that gives that lineage its name, alongside a metallic sheen and yellow highlighting — but this pattern is stated here as background only, not as a confirmed description of "Spilostichus Deep-water" itself.
Habitat
Documented from Ntekete and Chiwanga in the south-central part of Lake Malawi, this form occupies notably deeper water than the shallow rock-and-sand transition zone most Sciaenochromis favour — consistent with the "Deep-water" tag in its name. Predatory haplochromines historically linked to the spilostichus name are recorded hunting over open sandy bottoms at considerable depth, and this form is presumed to occupy a broadly similar deep, open habitat rather than close rock cover. Water chemistry through this depth range remains the lake's standard warm, hard, alkaline profile, though temperatures run slightly cooler than in the shallow littoral. Deep, open sandy-bottom habitat of this kind is less intensively surveyed than the shallow rocky littoral that dominates most Lake Malawi cichlid fieldwork, which is part of why deep-water forms carrying old or contested names, like this one, remain particularly poorly resolved.
Feeding
This form is presumed to be an active piscivore, hunting small fish near open sandy or transitional bottoms at depth — the ecological role shared by Sciaenochromis and by deep-dwelling Mylochromis alike. No feeding study specific to this population has been published, and this account rests on the general pattern documented for predatory Malawi haplochromines of similar build and habitat rather than on direct observation of "Spilostichus Deep-water." Deep-dwelling Malawi haplochromine predators of this general build typically hunt by cruising just above open sand or transitional rubble, relying on speed and surprise rather than the ambush-from-cover tactics available to shallower, rock-associated Sciaenochromis; this account extends that general expectation to "Spilostichus Deep-water" without direct confirmation.
Mating
No mating behaviour has been recorded for this specific form. By analogy with other Malawi haplochromine predators, males in nuptial colour are expected to hold and display from a territory near their hunting ground, with females visiting to spawn rather than forming lasting pairs. This is inference from the broader group, not a documented account. Deeper light conditions may affect how colour-based courtship functions for a population at this depth compared with shallower Sciaenochromis, but this is speculation rather than a documented behavioural difference, and no account specific to this form has been published. Predatory haplochromines of this general build are not known for elaborate courtship displays compared with the rock-bound mbuna; a simpler pattern of male display followed by a receptive female's approach is the general expectation across the group.
Breeding
Reproduction is assumed to follow the standard Lake Malawi pattern of maternal mouthbrooding: the female collects the fertilised eggs into her mouth and carries them through incubation before releasing free-swimming fry, with no parental contribution from the male. Clutch size, brooding duration, and any other specifics have not been documented for this form. Konings records a brooding period of roughly three weeks for the better-known S. fryeri, used here only as a rough genus-level benchmark; no clutch size, brooding duration, or any other reproductive detail has been documented for this deep-water population specifically. Deep-collected haplochromines of any kind are difficult to observe breeding in the wild, which is a large part of why so little reproductive detail exists for populations like this one compared with shallow, easily dived reef fish.
In the aquarium
This is an essentially unavailable fish in the hobby: deep-collected haplochromines are difficult to bring up without injury and rarely reach exporters in numbers, and an undescribed deep-water form carrying a contested historical name is not a fish most keepers will ever encounter. Where it has been kept, the general template for a large predatory Malawi haplochromine applies: a long tank with open swimming space, hard alkaline water, and tankmates too large to be treated as prey. No specific husbandry data exists for this population. Even the formally described, better-known Mylochromis spilostichus is described as rarely seen in trawl surveys and barely established in the aquarium trade, and a deep-water form carrying an unresolved version of that name would be expected to be rarer still.
Conservation
Sciaenochromis sp. "Spilostichus Deep-water" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form, has no Red List status of any category — a statement about its taxonomy, not its population health. Deep-water forms are generally less exposed to shoreline aquarium collection than shallow reef fish, but they remain part of a single lake system under sustained pressure from overfishing, sediment loading, and warming water, and no dedicated study of this form's population status exists to say more than that. The formally described Mylochromis spilostichus, historically associated with this name, is assessed Least Concern by the IUCN, reflecting a wide lake-wide distribution; whether that assessment says anything useful about this separately labelled deep-water form is unknown.
