Lethrinops sp. "Deep-water Altus" has no formal scientific description, no describing author, and no FishBase entry; the trade name pairs a resemblance to the described species Lethrinops altus with a "deep-water" qualifier, a convention used across the genus for populations that look similar to an established species but occupy a different, usually greater, depth. This is not a claim that the two are conspecific: Lethrinops altus is itself a deep-dwelling, elongate-snouted species associated with the group of muddy-bottom specialists that includes L. mylodon and L. macracanthus, and depth-associated variants within that already-deep group are a recognised pattern in the genus rather than an unusual claim. The genus was erected by Regan in 1922 and revised by Eccles and Trewavas in 1989; this form remains outside that formal treatment.
Morphology
As implied by the trade name, this form resembles Lethrinops altus, a species characterised by an elongate, downward-sloping snout adapted for probing soft or muddy bottoms, without being formally diagnosed as the same species. No independent measurement or colour description specific to this deeper population has been published, and none is invented here beyond the comparison the name itself records. Body form is presumed to follow the elongated, fusiform Lethrinops plan with the protrusible, angled mouth suited to substrate probing that characterises L. altus and its closest relatives.
Habitat
The only recorded locality for this form is the South East Arm of Lake Malawi, a broad, shallow embayment at the lake's southern end with extensive open sand and silt substrate. The "deep-water" qualifier indicates this population occupies greater depth than typical Lethrinops altus, a species already associated with deeper, softer-bottomed habitat than most sand-dwelling Lethrinops; deep-water forms in this group are commonly reported from roughly 66–131 ft or beyond, though the specific depth for this population has not been formally documented. Water at that depth remains within Lake Malawi's typical hard, alkaline profile but is cooler and dimmer than the shallows.
Feeding
This form is presumed to share the substrate-probing feeding mode associated with Lethrinops altus and its relatives: working a pointed, protrusible snout into soft or muddy sediment to extract buried invertebrates, a more specialised strategy than the open-sand sifting typical of shallower Lethrinops. No direct feeding observation has been published for this specific population; the description follows the documented feeding mode of the deep muddy-bottom group it is compared to.
Mating
No study of courtship or territoriality has been published for this form. Lethrinops in general are expected to be non-territorial outside the breeding season but to establish a small display site on open sand or soft bottom once in colour. There is no pair bond; the social system is lek-like, with females moving between coloured males to choose where to spawn. Behavioural specifics for this deep-water population have not been documented.
Breeding
Like every member of its genus, this form is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder: a female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth after spawning at a male's display site and incubates them there through several weeks of development before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further paternal care. Clutch size and brooding duration have not been documented for this specific population.
In the aquarium
Lethrinops sp. "Deep-water Altus" is not established in the aquarium hobby and no husbandry record exists for it specifically. A keeper who obtained it should follow genus-typical Lethrinops practice: a soft sand substrate at least 2 in deep to support natural feeding behaviour, a tank of at least 47 in to allow a trio or small harem group, and water matched to Lake Malawi's chemistry — roughly 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6, moderately hard to hard. Because the form is undescribed and known from a single locality, keepers who acquire it should record and preserve the collection site rather than mixing stock from other L. altus-type populations.
Conservation
No IUCN Red List assessment exists for Lethrinops sp. "Deep-water Altus", and none can until it receives a formal description. Deep, soft-bottomed habitats away from the immediate shoreline generally face less direct pressure from shoreline development than rocky inshore reefs, but open-water and demersal net fisheries in the South East Arm are a documented pressure on deep-dwelling Malawian cichlids generally. No population-specific data exist to characterise this form's status beyond "unassessed".
