Stigmatochromis sp. "Modestus Mbenji" is an informal designation, not a validly published name. It carries no describing author, no year of publication, and no listing in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The trade name reflects two things at once: "Modestus" signals that the fish closely resembles the described species Stigmatochromis modestus (Regan, 1922) in general appearance, and "Mbenji" ties it to the Mbenji Island area of central Lake Malawi, where this population was recorded at nearby Penga Penga Island — a short distance from a documented S. modestus locality on Mbenji Island itself. That two populations bearing the modestus resemblance are recognised separately at essentially the same reef complex is exactly the situation the "sp." convention exists for: collectors and researchers in the field noted a population they consider distinguishable from typical modestus, without a formal comparative study yet available to say precisely how. Until that work is published, this population should be treated as an undescribed, provisionally distinct form allied to S. modestus rather than assumed identical to it.
Morphology
Stigmatochromis sp. "Modestus Mbenji" is built on the same moderately elongate, laterally compressed plan shared across the genus's predatory species, with the large head and mouth typical of an ambush hunter. Stigmatochromis modestus, the species this form is named for, is documented as a comparatively large member of the genus — Konings records it reaching roughly 10 in, well above many congeners — and reaching a subdued, camouflaging dark brown base colour in which markings are largely obscured except under stress, when a small pattern of round spots along the flank becomes visible. Whether this Mbenji-area population matches that colour and size profile exactly, or differs in some documented respect that justifies keeping it separate from typical modestus, has not been published; the working distinction currently rests on field recognition rather than a written diagnosis.
Habitat
This form is recorded from Penga Penga Island, part of the Mbenji Island group standing offshore in the central-western basin of Lake Malawi — an isolated rocky outcrop rising from deep, open water rather than a stretch of continuous mainland shoreline. That setting is typical Stigmatochromis habitat: rock formations bordered by open sand, where the species lurks near cover to ambush passing prey. Water conditions follow the general Lake Malawi pattern for this depth range — warm, alkaline, and well-buffered, roughly mid-20s Celsius with a pH on the alkaline side of neutral. Its depth range at Penga Penga Island specifically, and whether it occurs more broadly through the Mbenji group, are not documented beyond this single locality record.
Feeding
Feeding habits for this form have not been separately documented, but Stigmatochromis modestus and its close relatives are established ambush predators, striking from cover in rocky recesses at small mbuna and other juvenile cichlids that pass within range. This population is presumed to hunt in the same manner around the rock formations of the Mbenji Island group, given its close resemblance to modestus and its occupation of comparable rock-and-sand habitat. Invertebrates encountered near ambush sites likely supplement the diet, as in other predatory haplochromines, but no gut-content analysis specific to this form has been published.
Mating
No courtship account specific to this population has been published. By analogy with Stigmatochromis modestus and other genus members, it is expected to be a polygynous, lek-like mouthbrooder in which males hold a shelter or territory near rocky cover and display to passing females rather than forming a pair bond. Females visit displaying males, spawn, and take the eggs into their mouths without further male involvement. The details of this form's own courtship — nest site choice, display behaviour, or seasonal timing — remain undocumented.
Breeding
Stigmatochromis sp. "Modestus Mbenji" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, the mode confirmed across the genus and universal among Lake Malawi haplochromines. A female takes the fertilised clutch into her mouth after spawning and carries it through development over several weeks, fasting or feeding little during that period, before releasing free-swimming fry with no further parental care from either sex. Given S. modestus's relatively large adult size, this population's clutches are expected to run to several dozen eggs, but no clutch-size figure specific to it has been documented.
In the aquarium
This form is not established in the ornamental trade and is known essentially from field records at Penga Penga Island rather than as an imported or captive-bred aquarium fish. Anyone keeping it should follow the general Stigmatochromis template: a large predatory haplochromine that needs structured rockwork with crevices for cover, a sand-and-rock substrate, and tankmates robust and large enough not to be treated as prey. Water should match Lake Malawi's chemistry — mid-20s Celsius, alkaline pH around 7.7–8.6, and well-buffered water — with the generous filtration and regular water changes any large predatory cichlid requires. Because the form so closely resembles the described S. modestus, keepers working with confirmed Penga Penga Island stock should track its provenance carefully to avoid mixing it with other modestus-like populations.
Conservation
Stigmatochromis sp. "Modestus Mbenji" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, lacking a formal name, has no Red List status of any kind. Stigmatochromis modestus itself has not been separately assessed either, so there is no proxy figure to lean on. As an isolated-reef population restricted to the Mbenji Island group, this form's exposure is chiefly to localised pressures — collection for the aquarium trade at a well-known offshore reef, and the broader fishing pressure affecting Lake Malawi's inshore rocky habitats. Its true population size and trend are unknown pending formal study.
