Stigmatochromis sp. "Big-eye" is not a formally described species and has no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. It belongs to Stigmatochromis, a genus of predatory Lake Malawi haplochromine cichlids related to Nimbochromis and Tyrannochromis, sharing with those genera an elongated body and an ambush-hunting lifestyle; the genus name combines the Greek stigma (mark, spot) with chromis, referencing the mottled or blotched patterning many Stigmatochromis species carry as camouflage. Several formally described species exist — including S. modestus, S. woodi, S. macrorhynchos, S. melanchros and S. pholidophorus — alongside a substantial number of undescribed locality- and character-defined forms recorded across the genus's Lake Malawi range. "Big-eye" flags eye size as the distinguishing character separating this Nkhotakota population from other Stigmatochromis, a working morphological trait rather than a formal diagnosis. It has not been matched with confidence to any described species.
Morphology
This form shares the genus's elongated, moderately robust predatory body plan with a relatively large mouth suited to taking sizeable prey. Its defining character, as named, is conspicuously enlarged eyes relative to the genus norm — a trait that, across cichlids generally, is often associated with hunting in dim light, twilight activity, or greater dependence on vision at depth or in turbid water, though the specific reason for this population's larger eyes has not been documented. Congeneric size varies: S. modestus reaches about 10 in, though most individuals run smaller. No species-specific measurements or colour description have been published for this Nkhotakota population beyond the eye-size character that names it; base coloration across the genus tends toward camouflaging browns and mottled patterning, and this form is presumed, but not confirmed, to follow that pattern.

Stigmatochromis as a genus favours intermediate and sand-rock transition habitat, and several congeners are documented hiding in dark rocky recesses during the day. A larger-than-typical eye is consistent with either a species that hunts or is active in lower-light conditions than its relatives, or one that occupies somewhat deeper water, but neither has been confirmed for this specific population. The surrounding water carries Lake Malawi's characteristic hard, alkaline chemistry.
Feeding
Stigmatochromis, like its close relatives Nimbochromis and Tyrannochromis, is a genus of predatory cichlids that hunt smaller fish, typically by ambush from cover or open ground rather than sustained pursuit. Congener S. modestus is documented preying mainly on small mbuna, striking from dark rocky recesses. This Nkhotakota population is presumed to follow a broadly similar predatory strategy, with its enlarged eyes plausibly aiding prey detection in lower light, though no feeding study specific to this form has been published.
Mating
Courtship has not been described for this form. By analogy with better-documented congeners, Stigmatochromis is presumed polygynous with no lasting pair bond. Konings documents S. modestus forming loose breeding colonies of roughly 5 to 15 males, each staking out a territory in the rocky biotope, typically under an overhanging rocky ledge, in a lek-like arrangement that lets a ripe female move between neighbouring males' territories before spawning — a marked shift from the solitary, non-territorial ambush lifestyle these fish otherwise lead outside the breeding period. Courtship display itself is expected to follow the standard haplochromine sequence of lateral posturing and quivering seen across predatory Malawi haps, though the specific sequence, and whether this Nkhotakota, big-eyed population forms similar breeding colonies, has not been documented.
Breeding
Stigmatochromis sp. "Big-eye" is treated as a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all members of its genus. Following spawning, the female is presumed to take fertilised eggs into her mouth and brood them alone for several weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, with no male or biparental care. Where kept, its needs would follow the general template for a moderate-sized predatory Malawi hap: a spacious aquarium with sand or fine-gravel substrate, rockwork offering genuine cave-like crevices rather than open cover, hard and strongly alkaline water in the mid-to-high 7s to low 8s pH, and a meaty diet reflecting its presumed piscivorous habits. Any mbuna-sized tankmates should be treated as potential prey rather than safe company.

Like other predatory Lake Malawi haps it is exposed to pressures including artisanal and commercial fishing, shoreline and habitat disturbance from a growing lakeshore population, and the broader basin-wide stresses documented for Lake Malawi generally: sediment and nutrient loading from deforested catchments, and a measured deep-water warming trend that strengthens stratification, limits the seasonal mixing that resupplies nutrients to the sunlit zone, and threatens to reduce the productivity underpinning the whole food web these predatory haps sit atop. Nkhotakota, a locality on the busier central-western shore, is not immune to these pressures. No conservation status beyond "not assessed" should be attached to this form.
