Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Like the rest of its genus, it carries a Lethrinops-style protrusible mouth and a diagonal band across the body, features that make Taeniolethrinops species notoriously difficult to tell apart outside of breeding colour — the trait that field workers actually use to separate them. Taxonomy & naming

Taeniolethrinops sp. "Furcicauda Liuli" is not a validly published species. It has no describing author, no year of publication, and no listing in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The genus Taeniolethrinops, erected by Eccles & Trewavas in their 1989 revision, gathers sand-dwelling haplochromines that combine a diagonal band on the body with a Lethrinops-type protrusible mouth — a genus name that literally means "banded Lethrinops-look-alike." "Furcicauda" in this form's trade name references the described species Taeniolethrinops furcicauda, whose deeply forked tail is diagnostic; this Liuli population is recognised as resembling furcicauda closely enough to be flagged as allied to it, while being kept provisionally separate under its own locality tag rather than folded into the species outright. Konings has noted that Taeniolethrinops species are extremely difficult to separate outside of breeding dress, since they share body shape and a plain, sand-camouflaged non-breeding colour — precisely the situation that produces informal, locality-tagged forms like this one pending closer study.

Morphology

Taeniolethrinops sp. "Furcicauda Liuli" shares the genus's characteristic build: an elongate, moderately compressed body, a protrusible, downward-angled Lethrinops-type mouth adapted for picking through sand, and a diagonal dark band running across the body that gives the genus its name. Taeniolethrinops furcicauda, the species this form resembles, is additionally diagnosed by a deeply forked caudal fin, and outside the breeding season these cichlids are silvery or sand-coloured and very hard to distinguish from one another by eye alone. Documentation of this Liuli population's own colouration and proportions has not been published in detail; whether its tail shape and other features match furcicauda precisely, or differ in some way that justifies keeping it under a separate tag, is not yet established.

Habitat

This form is recorded from Liuli, a locality on the Tanzanian shore in the northern part of Lake Malawi, part of the open-sand habitat that Taeniolethrinops species occupy across the lake. Konings notes that species in this genus forage over open sand and dig craters in it for breeding, and this population is presumed to use similar habitat at Liuli. Water conditions follow the general Lake Malawi pattern: warm, hard, and alkaline, roughly mid-20s Celsius with a pH on the alkaline side of neutral. Its specific depth range at Liuli, and how far its distribution extends along the Tanzanian shore, are not documented beyond this single locality record.

Feeding

Taeniolethrinops species are sand-sifting invertivores, using their protrusible mouths to take mouthfuls of substrate, sort out small buried invertebrates such as insect larvae, and expel the spent sand. This Liuli population, sharing the genus's mouth structure and occupying comparable open-sand habitat, is presumed to forage the same way, though no diet study specific to it has been published. Its close resemblance to T. furcicauda suggests a very similar prey spectrum to that species.

Mating

No courtship account specific to this population has been published, but Konings's field observations of Taeniolethrinops document males of at least one closely related form constructing large crater nests in open sand — structures roughly a metre across with a raised rim — and defending them while females forage independently nearby. This Liuli population, sharing the genus's sand-dwelling habit, is expected to follow a broadly similar polygynous, mouthbrooding pattern, with males holding a nest site and displaying to visiting females rather than pairing. Its own courtship behaviour has not been separately documented.

Breeding

Taeniolethrinops sp. "Furcicauda Liuli" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, the mode established across the genus and universal in Lake Malawi's haplochromine cichlids. A female would be expected to take the fertilised clutch into her mouth after spawning and carry it through several weeks of development before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further parental care from either parent afterward. Given the moderate-to-large size typical of Taeniolethrinops species, clutches for this form are expected to run to several dozen eggs, but no clutch-size figure specific to it has been documented.

In the aquarium

This form is not established in the aquarium trade and is known essentially from field records at Liuli rather than as an imported or captive-bred hobby fish. A keeper who did obtain it should follow the general Taeniolethrinops template: a fine sand substrate deep enough for digging, plenty of open floor space for foraging, and Lake Malawi water chemistry — mid-20s Celsius, alkaline pH around 7.7–8.6, hard water. Because Taeniolethrinops species are so difficult to tell apart outside breeding colour, keepers working with confirmed Liuli stock should document provenance carefully rather than assume the fish is identical to furcicauda populations from elsewhere in the lake.

Conservation

Taeniolethrinops sp. "Furcicauda Liuli" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, lacking a formal name, has no Red List status of any kind. As a Tanzanian-shore population it is exposed to the general pressures affecting Lake Malawi's sand-dwelling cichlid communities — artisanal fishing, particularly trawling and seining over open sand habitat, which disproportionately affects genera like Taeniolethrinops that live and breed on the open bottom. No dedicated assessment of this population's status has been published; its true condition is unknown pending formal study.
