Taxonomy & naming
Taeniolethrinops sp. "Furcicauda Ntekete" is not a validly published species; it has no describing author, no year, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The population entered the record through Ad Konings, writing in the Cichlids Yearbook: two specimens caught near Ntekete proved, on examination, to represent a form new to him — one with some similarity to Taeniolethrinops furcicauda but differing from it in having a shorter snout and a larger eye (Konings, Cichlids Yearbook, Vol. 1). That comparison is the basis of both this form's provisional placement near furcicauda and its distinguishing name. Konings's broader point about the genus bears repeating here: Taeniolethrinops species share a very similar body shape and are silvery or sand-coloured outside the breeding season, so reliable identification in the field depends on observing breeding males, examining nest type and habitat, or — as in this case — dissecting a small number of preserved specimens. Until a fuller series of specimens and a formal comparison are published, this remains an informal, unpublished population known from a handful of individuals.
Morphology
Taeniolethrinops sp. "Furcicauda Ntekete" carries the genus's diagnostic diagonal band and protrusible, Lethrinops-type mouth, on the elongate, sand-camouflaged body typical of the group. Konings's direct comparison against T. furcicauda singles out two features: this form has a shorter snout and a larger eye than furcicauda, the small but concrete morphological difference that separates the two populations in his examination of preserved specimens. Outside the breeding season the fish is silvery or sand-toned like its relatives, which is why the genus is so hard to tell apart by casual observation; Konings notes that breeding males acquire striking nuptial colours across Taeniolethrinops, but the specific breeding dress of this Ntekete population had not, at the time of his account, been directly observed. Konings records the form reaching a size of about 8 in, at the larger end for the genus.
Habitat
This form was found near the village of Ntekete on Lake Malawi's east coast, in small numbers — Konings describes it as one of several aquaristically unknown species turning up in a November survey of Lethrinops-group sand-dwellers, this particular one collected only sparingly near Ntekete. Its breeding males construct large crater nests directly in the sand, and Konings records two such nests observed at a depth of about 49 ft, with feeding males found foraging solitarily on the sand nearby. That places this population in the open-sand habitat characteristic of the genus, at a moderate depth on the eastern side of the lake. Water conditions follow the general Lake Malawi pattern for that depth: warm, hard, and alkaline.
Feeding
Konings records breeding males of this form foraging solitarily on the open sand in the vicinity of their nests, consistent with the sand-sifting invertivore diet typical of the genus: taking mouthfuls of substrate, sorting out small buried invertebrates, and expelling the spent sand. No detailed gut-content analysis of this population has been published, but its feeding behaviour is expected to match the pattern seen across Taeniolethrinops, including its close relative T. furcicauda.
Mating
This is one of the better-documented aspects of the form: Konings records a breeding male constructing a large crater nest in the sand, roughly a metre in diameter, with a raised rim around it, and observed two such nests at about 49 ft depth. Males appear to hold and defend these craters as spawning sites, foraging alone nearby when not actively courting, which fits the polygynous, lek-like pattern typical of Lake Malawi sand-dwelling haplochromines: no pair bond, with females visiting a male's nest to spawn and then departing. Konings's account does not describe the specifics of courtship display itself, only the nest structure and male foraging behaviour around it.
Breeding
Taeniolethrinops sp. "Furcicauda Ntekete" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode universal among Lake Malawi's haplochromine cichlids and confirmed across the genus, though Konings's account does not describe the mouthbrooding process itself in detail for this population. A female would be expected to take the fertilised clutch from the male's crater nest into her mouth and carry it through several weeks of development before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further parental care from either parent afterward. Given the roughly 8 in size Konings records for adults of this form, clutches are expected to run to several dozen eggs, though no specific count has been published.
In the aquarium
This form is not established in the aquarium trade; it is known from only a small number of field-collected specimens near Ntekete rather than as an imported or captive-bred hobby fish. A keeper who did obtain it should follow the general Taeniolethrinops template: a deep, fine sand substrate with generous open floor space — males of this form are documented building craters up to about a metre across, so a large tank footprint would be needed to accommodate that behaviour — and Lake Malawi water chemistry of mid-20s Celsius, alkaline pH around 7.7–8.6, and hard water. Given how few specimens are known, any wild-collected stock should be documented carefully as a distinct Ntekete population rather than assumed identical to furcicauda from elsewhere in the lake.
Conservation
Taeniolethrinops sp. "Furcicauda Ntekete" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, lacking a formal name, has no Red List status. Konings's account describes it as found only in very small numbers near Ntekete, which may reflect genuine rarity, a narrow habitat requirement, or simply limited survey effort at this specific locality — the available record cannot distinguish between these. As an east-coast sand-dwelling population it shares the general exposure of Taeniolethrinops species to artisanal fishing pressure over open-sand habitat. No dedicated conservation assessment has been published; its status is unknown.
