Aquascape & setup

Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Aulonocara brevinidus, the "blue gold sand" peacock, is a small sand-dwelling cichlid of Lake Malawi described by Ad Konings in 1995 — one of three new species he named in his review of the genus's open-bottom members. It is a fish of the lake's eastern shore, where territorial males hover over the sand and excavate a spawning pit so unusually shallow — a scrape no deeper than a saucer — that Konings built the name around it. Like all peacocks it carries the genus's signature toolkit: enlarged sensory pores riddling the head, used to "hear" small invertebrates buried in the sediment and snap them up in a quick downward dive.

Taxonomy & naming

Aulonocara brevinidus was formally described by Ad Konings in 1995, in volume 5 of The Cichlids Yearbook, within a paper titled "A review of the sand-dwelling species of the genus Aulonocara, with the description of three new species" (the other two being Aulonocara aquilonium and Aulonocara gertrudae). Before that description the fish had circulated in the hobby and the literature under the provisional label Aulonocara sp. "blue gold sand" (Konings, 1990a). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the name as valid: Aulonocara brevinidus Konings 1995, family Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae.

The holotype (MRAC 94-56-P-55), a female of 3.5 in standard length, was collected by Konings south of the Nsinje (Msinje) River at Masinje, Malawi, on 1 November 1989, and is held at the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium; six paratypes (MRAC 94-56-P-56 to 61), three males and three females of 3–3.5 in SL, came from the same locality. The genus name combines the Greek aulos, a pipe or flute, with kara, head — a reference to the open, channel-like sensory canals that pit the skull of these fishes. The species epithet is the descriptive part of the name: from Latin brevis ("short, shallow") and nidus ("nest"), for the strikingly shallow spawning pit dug by the male, a feature Konings singled out as diagnostic of the species' behavior.

Morphology

This is a small peacock. Konings gives a maximum of about 3.5 in standard length, and FishBase repeats 3.5 in SL as the maximum; the type series ran from roughly 3–3.5 in SL. The body is the typical fusiform Aulonocara shape, with the head measurements Konings recorded falling in the genus's usual range (body depth 2.7–3.0 and head length 2.8–3.0 times in standard length). Fin counts are dorsal XVI–XVII with 9–10 soft rays and anal III with 8–10 soft rays, and there are 32–33 scales in a longitudinal series with a single row of scales on the cheek — the sand-dweller condition.

Like most peacocks, Aulonocara brevinidus is sexually dichromatic and dimorphic in pattern. Territorial males in nuptial dress are blue, the basis of the "blue gold sand" trade name, and a key diagnostic mark is the presence of seven dark vertical bars below the dorsal fin — fewer than the eight bars of the closely similar Aulonocara aquilonium and a character Konings used to separate brevinidus from Aulonocara nyassae. Females and non-territorial individuals are the pale sandy-yellow to silvery coloration typical of the open-bottom Aulonocara, much lighter than the rock-dwelling members of the genus. Females are recognised in the field by distinct yellow spots in the anal fin.

Habitat

Aulonocara brevinidus is endemic to Lake Malawi and, within it, is essentially a fish of the eastern shore. Konings reported its northernmost localities at Lupingu and Manda in Tanzania, its type population at Masinje (Msinje) in Malawi, and Mozambican populations at Wikihi, Mara Point, Chiloelo and Chiloelo Point. Reports of the species from Kande Island on the western shore were, at the time of description, unconfirmed, so Konings considered the distribution restricted to the east coast; the IUCN assessment later extends the recorded range from Lupingu in Tanzania south to Makanjila Point in Malawi and adds an isolated occurrence at Nkhomo Reef on the western shore. Across its range the species is shared between Malawi, Tanzania and Mozambique.

It is a sand-dweller in the strict ecological sense. At every locality Konings examined, Aulonocara brevinidus was found at a depth of about 59–72 ft (around 66 ft, ~66 ft), over sandy bottoms; the IUCN notes a tendency toward somewhat muddy substrate near river outlets, which fits the type locality south of a river mouth. As an inhabitant of Lake Malawi's warm, stable, strongly alkaline upper-to-middle water column, it lives in water that is hard and oxygen-rich, with a pH around 7.7–8.6 and temperatures broadly in the 75–82 °F (75–82 °F) band typical of the lake's shallow and sublittoral zones.

Feeding

Aulonocara brevinidus feeds by the technique that defines the genus, which Konings termed "sonar-feeding": the fish hovers motionless a few millimeters above the sand, registers the faint movements of buried prey through the greatly enlarged lateral-line canals in its lower jaw and head, then drops onto the spot in a quick dive. The enlarged sensory pores in the preorbital, preopercular and lower-jaw bones — pores wider than the bone between them — are the anatomical hallmark of Aulonocara and the literal reason for the genus name.

The diet is small benthic invertebrates living in or on the sediment. Konings reported that the gut of a non-registered specimen contained sand grains, tiny snails, and rather large (0.5–1 in) shrimp-like crustaceans — the sand grains an incidental byproduct of striking into the substrate, the snails and crustaceans the real targets. The IUCN summarises the diet simply as small invertebrates that live in the sand. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 3.5, squarely a micro-carnivore on benthic invertebrates rather than an algae grazer.

Mating

Aulonocara brevinidus follows the polygynous social system standard for Malawi peacocks, with no pair bond: males hold territories and females visit only to spawn. Konings observed territorial males in nuptial color throughout the year, indicating no tight breeding season. Territorial males space themselves out over the open sand — in the Masinje population about two meters apart, and more than five meters apart in some other populations — and each defends a spawning site against rival males with some vigour.

Females, recognisable by the yellow spots in the anal fin, occur singly or forage in small groups in the neighbourhood of the males' territories rather than holding ground of their own. Courtship plays out over the male's pit, the focal point of his territory: a ripe female is led to the scrape, where the pair circle and the male displays his blue nuptial dress before she lays. The defining feature of that arena — the unusually shallow pit itself — is described in the Breeding section.

Breeding

Aulonocara brevinidus is a maternal mouthbrooder. The species' defining behavior — and the source of its name — is the male's spawning pit. Konings described territorial males defending a very shallow scrape no deeper than 1 in (about an inch) and roughly 6–8 in in diameter; the IUCN echoes this, calling the spawning site "not larger and deeper than a regular saucer." This is a striking departure from some other sand-dwelling Aulonocara, whose males may dig crater nests up to 19.5 in deep where the substrate allows.

As in all haplochromine mouthbrooders, the female takes the eggs into her mouth immediately after laying and broods the developing young in her buccal cavity, releasing free-swimming fry after roughly three weeks; the male contributes no parental care beyond the spawning act. Clutch size has not been reported specifically for this species, but Malawi peacocks of comparable size typically lay small clutches of a few dozen eggs. Mouthbrooding females gather and remain together in small groups in the same area, a pattern Konings noted in the field and one the IUCN repeats in its ecology summary.

In the aquarium

Aulonocara brevinidus is not a common peacock in the hobby. It circulates occasionally under its trade name "blue gold sand," but most keepers will encounter it only through specialist Malawi cichlid importers, and it is far rarer in stock lists than the bigger, bolder members of the genus such as Aulonocara stuartgranti or Aulonocara jacobfreibergi. Anyone who does source it will find the husbandry straightforward by Malawi standards — this is a fish for a keeper who already understands the chemistry and social dynamics of Rift Lake cichlids, not a beginner species.

Because Aulonocara brevinidus is a small peacock — adults max out near 3.5 in standard length — a tank of around 40–55 US gal can house a single-species group, though a larger tank of 65–90 US gal gives more flexibility for managing aggression and for keeping a proper social group. The floor plan matters more than water volume: a wide footprint with uninterrupted sandy substrate down the centre is essential. The species forages by hovering millimetres above fine sediment and detecting buried invertebrates through its lateral-line pits, so bare glass, coarse gravel or heavy planting that smothers the sand will suppress natural behaviour. Fine silica or pool-filter sand, 2–3 in deep, with a rocky border along the back and sides to provide line-of-sight breaks and female refuges, replicates the east-coast habitat reasonably well.

Water chemistry must reflect Lake Malawi: pH 7.8–8.6, moderate to high hardness (10–20 °dH or equivalent), temperature 75–82 °F (75–82 °F). Municipal tapwater in many hard-water regions hits this range with no amendment; softer tapwater needs a Rift Lake buffer or crushed coral in the sump. Efficient biological filtration with a moderate flow rate is important — the lake is large and well-oxygenated, and high nitrate will suppress colour and breeding behaviour. Fortnightly water changes of 25–30% are a sensible baseline.

Tankmate selection requires care. The single greatest mistake with peacocks of any species is housing multiple males of similar-looking Aulonocara together: peacock males hybridise readily and the offspring are genetically compromised fish that undermine the integrity of both species. Aulonocara brevinidus males are blue and closely resemble several other blue sand-dwelling peacocks — most notably Aulonocara aquilonium, which differs by only one vertical bar count — so the only safe rule is one Aulonocara species per tank, with one male to three or four females. A second, visually distinct peacock species can coexist if the tank is large enough to break sight lines, but the risk of hybridisation makes this inadvisable for anyone who may later sell or trade fish. Haplochromine utaka (Copadichromis, Placidochromis) of comparable size make acceptable tankmates; hyper-aggressive mbuna (rock-dwellers) such as Melanochromis or Labeotropheus are not — they outcompete and harass sand-dwellers relentlessly, and the stress shows in suppressed colour and chronic fin damage.

Breeding in captivity follows the same pattern observed in the lake. A conditioned male in full nuptial blue will establish a loose territory over his patch of sand, scratch a very shallow pit — the species-diagnostic scrape just 1 in deep — and display to females. Spawning occurs over the pit, after which the female broods the eggs alone in her buccal cavity for approximately three weeks. Clutches are small by cichlid standards, typically a few dozen fry, which the female will briefly take back if threatened after they become free-swimming. The biggest keeper mistake at this stage is leaving the brooding female in the display tank where tankmate harassment causes her to spit early or swallow the brood; moving her to a dedicated brooding tank at about two weeks, or providing heavy cover, substantially improves yield. Fry accept finely crushed flake and baby brine shrimp nauplii immediately and grow steadily on a varied diet.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Aulonocara brevinidus as Least Concern (Konings, Kazembe & Makocho 2018; assessed 22 June 2018; e.T61058A47231410), a status carried over from an earlier 2006 Least Concern listing. The reasoning is geographic: the species is widespread along the east coast of Lake Malawi across three countries — Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania — and no major widespread threats have been identified, so its broad distribution is judged to keep it secure. The population trend is listed as unknown, as no population data exist.

The pressures the assessors do note are modest and indirect. The species is taken incidentally in the subsistence fishery — caught in beach seines and gill nets as a food fish but not specifically targeted — and is irregularly collected for the ornamental trade. Least Concern for the species, however, is not the same as a healthy lake: Lake Malawi faces mounting basin-wide strain from overfishing, sediment and nutrient loading off deforested catchments, and warming that strengthens stratification and suppresses nutrient upwelling. For a sand-dweller that forages near river outlets over fine substrate, the most relevant of these is sedimentation and the smothering of the open-bottom foraging habitat its sonar-feeding depends on. The honest framing is that the species is not in trouble today, but its security rests on the continued health of the lake's nearshore sand habitats.
