Taxonomy & naming
Aulonocara hansbaenschi was described in 1987 by the German workers Manfred K. Meyer, Rüdiger Riehl and Helmut Zetzsche, in their revision of the genus Aulonocara published in the Courier Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg (volume 94, pages 7-53). That single paper erected six new peacocks at once — ethelwynnae, hansbaenschi, hueseri, korneliae, saulosi and steveni — and rearranged the boundary between Aulonocara and the related genus Trematocranus, concluding that the swelling of the head's mucus cavities and the cheek scale rows long used to separate them occur in too many combinations to be diagnostic. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the holotype as SMF 21136 with eleven paratypes (SMF 21137) in the Senckenberg Museum, Frankfurt, and gives the type locality as 5 mi south of Masinje on the eastern shore of Lake Malawi. The species epithet honours Hans-Albrecht Baensch (1941-2016), the German aquarist who founded the Mergus publishing house in 1977 and brought out the Baensch Aquarien Atlas — a point worth pinning down, because the congener Aulonocara baenschi instead honours his father, Ulrich Baensch, the inventor of TetraMin flake food; the two eponyms are routinely confused. The deeper question is whether hansbaenschi is a species at all. Eccles & Trewavas (1989), Maréchal's CLOFFA treatment (1991) and Tawil (2003) accepted it as valid, and FishBase still lists it so. But Ad Konings — the leading authority on the lake's cichlids — concluded in his 2016 Malawi Cichlids in their Natural Habitat that hansbaenschi is merely the southeastern population of the highly variable Aulonocara stuartgranti Meyer & Riehl, 1985, and on that basis the Catalog of Fishes now carries it as a junior synonym of stuartgranti. Recent identification work in the Konings/Stauffer tradition follows the same synonymy while still labelling the fish the 'red shoulder'. This article treats hansbaenschi as the name under which the fish is described, kept and traded, while being explicit that its status as a distinct taxon is not settled.
Morphology
This is a small peacock. FishBase, following Maréchal's CLOFFA compilation, gives a maximum of 3.5 in standard length, while Seriously Fish cites mature fish of roughly 3.5–4.5 in SL and some aquarium sources quote total lengths of 4.5–6 in; the spread reflects the difference between the modest type material and well-fed captive stock, and standard length excludes the tail. The body is the moderately deep, laterally compressed haplochromine form, and the head carries the genus hallmark: a network of conspicuously enlarged sensory pores, the lateral-line canals of the face widened into pits that register the movements of buried prey. Sexual dichromatism is strong and is the basis of the fish's trade appeal. Dominant males are washed in metallic blue over the head and flanks, broken by faint vertical bars and rows of pale spots, and — the feature that names the fish — a wash of orange to fiery red across the shoulder behind the gill cover, often carried into red margins on the dorsal and other fins. Females and non-territorial males are far plainer, a drab silvery-brown that is hard to tell from the females of other peacocks. Because the species sits within the variable stuartgranti complex, the colour pattern itself is the main field character; there is no single morphometric trait that cleanly isolates it, which is precisely why its specific status has been doubted.
Habitat
Aulonocara hansbaenschi is endemic to Lake Malawi and, as recognised, confined to a small stretch of the lake's southeastern shore. FishBase summarises its range as 'between Fort Maguire and Masinje', and Seriously Fish lists just four localities — Masinje (the type locality), Fort Maguire, Mara Point and Thumbi West Island — all within a compact area. The fish lives in the lake's intermediate zone, where rocky shores break up into sand strewn with scattered boulders. What sets it apart from most of its sand-foraging relatives is a documented preference, at Masinje, for rocky caves and crevices in relatively shallow water of about 10–20 ft, behaviour closer to the cave-dwelling Aulonocara jacobfreibergi than to the open-sand peacocks. The water is the warm, hard, alkaline medium of Malawi's upper layers: FishBase gives an in-situ range of about 73–81 °F, pH 7.5-8.5 and hardness 10-15 dH. If Konings is right that this is simply the southern stuartgranti, then the 'true' range of the lineage is far wider; the narrow four-locality distribution applies to the red-shouldered southeastern form specifically. In-situ ecological notes for these populations trace back to the companion paper by Grant, Dieckhoff, Mayland & Meyer (1987) on the ecology of Aulonocara, published alongside the species description.
Feeding
Like the rest of the genus, Aulonocara hansbaenschi is a sensory-pore invertivore. FishBase records its diet as small sand-dwelling invertebrates and places it at trophic level about 3.5. The peacock foraging method is distinctive: the fish hovers just above the bottom, the enlarged pores on its head detecting the faint vibrations of invertebrates moving in or on the substrate, then takes a mouthful of sand and sifts the edible items out, expelling the spent grains through the gills and mouth. In this species the rocky, cave-oriented habitat means it works the sand pockets between and beneath stones as much as open flats. FishBase also notes a tendency to hide in caves, consistent with the Masinje observations. In captivity this translates into a clear husbandry requirement — a bed of fine sand the fish can actually sift, since coarse gravel both prevents the natural feeding action and can damage the delicate gill filaments — supported by a varied diet of fine prepared foods and small live or frozen invertebrates such as chironomid larvae, Artemia and Tubifex, ideally with some vegetable content.
Mating
Aulonocara hansbaenschi is polygynous and lek-like in its social organisation, with no pair bond, as is universal among Lake Malawi's mouthbrooding haplochromines. Coloured, sexually active males hold and defend small territories — here typically centred on a rock cave or sheltered crevice rather than an open sand crater — and display to passing females, who are not territorial and range more freely. A ripe female enters a male's territory, and courtship is brief and conventional for the genus. Because males signal with the conspicuous red shoulder and blue body year-round, the display is effectively always on. In the aquarium this same biology drives the standard advice: males are generally peaceable toward differently coloured fish but turn aggressive toward anything resembling a rival peacock, and they can harass females persistently, so keepers maintain a single male with a group of several females to spread that attention. Because most Aulonocara interbreed readily, mixing this species with other peacocks risks hybridisation as much as conflict.
Breeding
The species is a maternal (ovophilous) mouthbrooder, and breeding follows the classic Malawi-peacock script. A displaying male draws a willing female to his site, where she lays a small batch of eggs and immediately takes them into her mouth; she is then drawn to the egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin and, in trying to gather these false 'eggs', takes in the milt that fertilises the clutch already in her buccal cavity. The female alone broods, carrying the eggs and larvae in her mouth for up to about four weeks and fasting through most of that period, recognisable by her distended jaw and a periodic chewing motion, before releasing fully free-swimming fry. There is no biparental care and no further investment once the young are released; the fry may still carry some yolk at release and will take Artemia nauplii once it is absorbed, becoming sexable at around four months. The species spawns readily, often in a community tank, which is why it has long been a fixture of the trade. The Aulonocara habit of interbreeding makes line-purity, not difficulty of spawning, the real breeding challenge — many tank-raised 'Red Shoulders' carry unknown peacock ancestry.
In the aquarium
Aulonocara hansbaenschi is one of the most widely kept of the Malawi peacocks and is well suited to a moderately experienced keeper who can maintain stable, hard, alkaline conditions. A single male with three to five females can be housed comfortably in a tank of around 40–50 US gal (roughly 48 inches / 47 in), though more space is preferable because males can be relentless in their courtship and subordinate fish need unobstructed escape routes. The bottom should be covered in a layer of fine silica or pool-filter sand, several centimetres deep, which allows the fish to express their natural sieving behaviour; a bed of coarse gravel or bare glass shuts down that feeding drive and can abrade the delicate gill surfaces. Solid rockwork — piled into caves and overhangs along the back and sides of the tank — provides both refuge for females and the sheltered crevice territory that dominant males hold in the wild. Open swimming space over the sand in the centre and front of the tank is equally important.
Water chemistry should match Lake Malawi conditions: a temperature of 73–81 °F, pH in the range of 7.8–8.5, and general hardness of around 10–15 dH are appropriate targets drawn from field data. Malawi water is naturally low in carbonate and total dissolved solids relative to Tanganyika, so extremes of hardness are unnecessary; what matters is stability in the alkaline band and consistent, good-quality water changes. Peacocks are more sensitive to accumulated nitrogenous waste than their robust appearance suggests, and deteriorating water is a common trigger for HITH (hole-in-the-head), which is not a disease specific to this species but is well documented across the peacock/hap community. Efficient filtration and a weekly change of 20–30% of the tank volume are routine requirements.
In terms of tankmates, the safest companions are other non-peacock Malawi haplochromines of comparable size and temperament — the Copadichromis or Placidochromis groups, for example — or the more peaceable mbuna in a large enough tank that mbuna aggression can be diffused. The real caution with Aulonocara hansbaenschi specifically is hybridisation. Males will readily cross with any other Aulonocara female and with females of closely related haplochromine genera that share the same general body plan, and because the fish trades under a large umbrella of 'red shoulder peacock' names, tank-bred stock already carries uncertain pedigree in many lines. Keeping this species alongside other peacocks — especially the many blue-and-orange or blue-and-red forms — is a recipe for hybrids. Even well-intentioned breeders have diluted lines by running multiple Aulonocara together. If line integrity matters, this species should be kept species-only or alongside fish it will not cross with.
Breeding in captivity is straightforward and happens without special inducement. A dominant, well-conditioned male will court females persistently, and a ripe female will accept. The female broods the eggs and larvae in her buccal cavity for roughly three to four weeks, visibly distended about the jaw and chewing periodically. The most common keeper mistake is leaving the brooding female in a community tank for the full term, where persistent harassment from the male or tankmates stresses her into premature release or egg-swallowing. Moving her to a dedicated holding tank or using a well-planted, broken-up aquascape that lets her avoid the male is standard practice. Released fry are large enough to take newly hatched Artemia immediately and grow quickly. Sexing at around four months is typically possible by colour alone.
The species is broadly forgiving of diet. In the wild it takes small benthic invertebrates sieved from sand and rock pockets; in the tank it does well on a rotation of high-quality cichlid pellets or flake as a base, supplemented with frozen bloodworm (chironomid larvae), Artemia, Mysis and similar invertebrate foods. Overfeeding with high-protein fare and feeds with excessive lipid content should be avoided — digestive problems are common in Malawi cichlids fed heavily on fatty foods. Some vegetable matter (Spirulina-based foods) is beneficial, generalising from the care requirements of the wider Malawi community. Overall, Aulonocara hansbaenschi is a genuinely accessible species for anyone who can meet the water chemistry baseline, a good entry point into Malawi peacocks, provided the hybridisation risk with other peacocks is taken seriously from the outset.
Conservation
Aulonocara hansbaenschi has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List — it is listed as Not Evaluated (FishBase, Red List version 2025-2) — and it carries no CITES listing. Part of the reason is taxonomic: with the name treated by the Catalog of Fishes and Konings as a junior synonym of the wide-ranging Aulonocara stuartgranti, conservation assessment naturally attaches to that broader species rather than to the red-shouldered southeastern form. That ambiguity itself is the conservation story here. If the fish is a narrow endemic confined to four shallow southeastern localities, it is exposed in the way Lake Malawi's restricted rocky-shore cichlids characteristically are — to shoreline development, sedimentation from deforestation in the catchment, and targeted collection of coloured males for the ornamental trade. If instead it is one colour form of a widespread species, those local pressures are buffered by populations elsewhere. Either way it sits within a lake under mounting strain: studies of Lake Malawi document warming surface waters and strengthened stratification that reduce the mixing which fuels productivity, alongside catchment erosion and heavy fishing pressure. Heavy demand for tank-bred peacocks has at least reduced reliance on wild capture for this species, but the same trade has muddied its identity through decades of hybridisation. The honest summary is that no one has formally evaluated this fish's status, and its conservation needs cannot be cleanly separated from the unresolved question of what it is.
