Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Aulonocara aquilonium is a small sand-dwelling peacock cichlid endemic to the northern reaches of Lake Malawi, formally described by Ad Konings in 1995 as one of three new species in his review of the genus's sand-dwellers. At about 3.5 in standard length it is the smallest of these open-bottom Aulonocara — a silvery, sonar-feeding invertivore that hovers above the sand near the rock-sand interface and hunts buried prey with the enlarged sensory canals that channel its head. Its naming carries a quiet correction: the fish Konings had pictured and labelled as the obscure Aulonocara auditor in 1991 turned out, on closer study, to be this previously undescribed species.

Taxonomy & naming

Aulonocara aquilonium was described by Ad Konings in 1995, in volume 5 of The Cichlids Yearbook, within a paper titled "A review of the sand-dwelling species of the genus Aulonocara, with the description of three new species." The holotype is a male of 3 in standard length (4 in total length), catalogued as MRAC 94-56-P-62 in the Royal Museum for Central Africa at Tervuren, collected by Konings at Mdoka, Malawi, on 26 November 1990. The type series adds seven male and two female paratypes (MRAC 94-56-P-63 to -71) from the same locality.

The most important point in the species' history is a self-correction by its author. In 1991 Konings had figured this fish under the name Aulonocara auditor, a poorly known species whose holotype — a 3 in female from near Vua in the north of the lake — had been described by Trewavas. On re-examining the type, Konings concluded that he had previously misidentified an undescribed sand-dweller as Aulonocara auditor, and he formally separated it here as Aulonocara aquilonium. The true Aulonocara auditor is a different, problematic fish: it has three rows of scales on the cheek and a spotted flank pattern more reminiscent of Protomelas than of Aulonocara, it lacks the strongly enlarged infraorbital bones of the sand-dwelling group, and Konings provisionally kept it among the rock-dwelling members of the genus pending more material. In short, Aulonocara aquilonium is a sand-dweller and Aulonocara auditor is not, and the two should not be conflated despite the older literature — a confusion that persists in the trade, where Aulonocara aquilonium is still occasionally sold as "Aulonocara auditor." Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase both list Aulonocara aquilonium as a valid species.

Morphology

Aulonocara aquilonium is a small peacock, attaining roughly 3.5 in standard length — the smallest of the sand-dwelling Aulonocara reviewed by Konings; the holotype male measured 3 in SL (4 in total length). In Konings's diagnosis the body depth is contained 2.8 to 3.1 times in standard length and the head 2.7 to 2.9 times; the eye is large, the snout short, and the preorbital (lachrymal) bone deep and pore-riddled, all hallmarks of the sand-dwelling group. The mouth is terminal, with teeth in four to five rows in the upper jaw and five to seven in the lower, the outer row unequally bicuspid and the inner rows unicuspid. There are 32 to 33 scales in a longitudinal series and a single row of scales on the cheek, the dorsal fin carries XVI–XVII spines and 9–11 rays, and the anal fin III spines and 8–9 rays.

Like its relatives the species is light-coloured — a sandy-yellow to silvery base typical of the sand-dwelling peacocks, far paler than the rock-dwelling Aulonocara. Sexual dimorphism is clear in breeding condition: territorial males develop brighter coloration with the metallic blue face and yellow-edged fins visible in Konings's in-situ photographs from Mdoka, while females and non-territorial males stay drab and silvery. A practical field character distinguishes it from the closely similar Aulonocara brevinidus: Aulonocara aquilonium shows eight vertical bars below the dorsal fin, whereas Aulonocara brevinidus has seven. It is also separated from Aulonocara nyassae by a larger postorbital, from Aulonocara guentheri and Aulonocara rostratum by the larger eye and shorter snout and preorbital, and from Aulonocara gertrudae by a longer caudal peduncle.

Habitat

Aulonocara aquilonium is endemic to Lake Malawi and, as its name advertises, occupies the northern part of the lake. The IUCN assessment restricts its known range to Mdoka and Ngara in the northwestern corner of the lake — the type material came from Mdoka, and Konings photographed a male nearby that he judged conspecific. Although Lake Malawi is shared between Malawi, Tanzania and Mozambique, every documented record of this fish lies on the Malawian shore, so its range is best given simply as Malawi, within the single Lake Malawi freshwater ecoregion.

The species is a fish of the sandy bottom near the rock-sand interface rather than open sandflats or pure rock. In keeping with the genus's sand-dwellers it lives in the lake's shallow waters — the group as a whole occupies depths of less than 164 ft — with the foraging schools and territorial males that Konings observed concentrated in the roughly 39–82 ft band and the males establishing patches at around 66 ft. Lake Malawi's nearshore water is warm, alkaline and hard: broadly 73–82 °F, a pH on the order of 7.7–8.6, and the oxygen-rich, mineral-rich chemistry typical of the upper water column.

Feeding

Aulonocara aquilonium is a sand-sifting invertivore that feeds by the technique Konings calls "sonar-feeding," shared across the observed sand-dwelling peacocks. The fish hovers almost motionless five to ten millimetres above the sand and makes an occasional snout-down dive when its enlarged cranial sensory canals register movement in the sediment; the prey, once located, is captured on the dive. This is the behaviour that defines the genus in the field — the preorbital, preopercular and lower-jaw bones are distended and almost entirely occupied by the sensory canal system, with the pores wider than the bone between them.

What the fish eats is documented from the wider study rather than for this species alone: the gut of a sand-dwelling Aulonocara from the same review contained sand grains, tiny snails and rather large (0.5–1 in) shrimp-like crustaceans, a profile consistent with a benthic micro-predator picking buried and bottom-dwelling invertebrates out of the sand. Its small size and large eye fit a fish that detects, sifts and snaps up small invertebrate prey at the rock-sand margin rather than crushing hard food or grazing algae. In the community it is a low-level benthic predator of the sand zone, neither a piscivore nor an algae-grazer.

Mating

Aulonocara aquilonium follows the polygynous, lek-like social system typical of the genus, and the most detailed behavioural notes come straight from Konings's observations at Mdoka, where the species shows a strong seasonal rhythm. In November and December it is abundant at the rock-sand interface and territorial males appear; by June only foraging individuals are present, in much smaller numbers — a pattern that points to breeding concentrated in the warmer late-year months rather than spread evenly across the year.

Territorial males set up at around 66 ft depth, each defending a small patch of sand. Tellingly, that defence is directed against conspecific males only — the male holds his spawning patch against rival Aulonocara aquilonium rather than driving off all comers. Away from the breeding territories, foraging females and non-territorial males gather in large schools across the 39–82 ft sand zone, and ripe females move onto the male patches to spawn. As in all peacocks there is no pair bond: the male's role is confined to courtship and fertilization over his patch of sand.

Breeding

Aulonocara aquilonium is a maternal mouthbrooder, in line with the rest of the genus and with the Lake Malawi haplochromines generally. Spawning takes place over the territorial male's small patch of sand; the female takes the eggs into her mouth and broods the developing young in her buccal cavity, with no paternal care of any kind once fertilization is complete.

The specifics of clutch size, egg number, incubation period and fry release have not been documented for this species in the wild or in captivity — it is an ichthyologist's fish that is rarely kept, so the fine detail of its breeding is inferred from its close relatives rather than recorded directly. What is established is the seasonality: the appearance of territorial, colourful males at Mdoka in November and December, and their absence by June, indicates that reproduction is concentrated in the late-year, warmer-water months. In its general mode — maternal mouthbrooding with brief, female-only care and a lek of sand-patch-holding males — it matches the well-studied sand-dwelling Aulonocara closely enough that captive husbandry, were the fish available, would follow the standard peacock template.

In the aquarium

Aulonocara aquilonium is a genuinely uncommon fish in the hobby. It occasionally circulates in specialist Malawi circles, sometimes mislabelled as "Aulonocara auditor," but it is not a staple of the trade the way larger, showier peacocks are. Keepers who do obtain it should approach it as a specialist project rather than a beginner's fish — not because its care is technically demanding, but because the fish is small, subtle, and unforgiving of the shortcuts that bigger peacocks can sometimes absorb. A tank of 47 in (around 80 US gal) is a workable minimum for a small breeding group; larger is better, both because males need room to partition territories without constant fighting and because the additional water volume makes it easier to maintain the stable chemistry the fish requires. Taller tanks offer no advantage over standard-height designs; horizontal footprint matters more.

Water chemistry must match the hard, alkaline conditions of northern Lake Malawi. Target pH 7.8–8.5, temperature 75–82 °F, and hard water (general hardness in the range of 10–20 °dH, carbonate hardness 8–12 °dKH). Tap water that is naturally soft or acidic needs buffering; a crushed-coral or aragonite substrate and commercial Rift Valley salt mixes are the standard remedies. Stability is more important than hitting an exact number — slow drifts in pH or temperature stress the fish less than rapid swings. Efficient mechanical and biological filtration matters because the lake itself is oligotrophic and clear, and these fish do not thrive in accumulated waste.

Substrate and layout are not optional niceties — they are functional requirements. A deep sand bed (2 in or more of fine sand) is essential: this is the hunting ground the fish's entire sensory system is built to exploit, and on bare glass or coarse gravel it will be unable to feed naturally and will remain perpetually stressed. Rocks or cobble stacked to form broken slopes and overhangs along the back and sides of the aquarium replicate the rock-sand interface habitat. Males establish small sand patches in front of or between rock formations; without this structure they either fail to display or turn their aggression on tankmates. Open swimming space in the foreground should be kept clear.

Tankmate selection requires care. The best companions are other rock-dwelling or sand-dwelling cichlids of broadly similar temperament and chemistry requirements — peaceful to moderately active species from Lake Malawi such as Copadichromis or Placidochromis make reasonable choices. Mbuna (the scrappy rock-dwelling haplochromines like Pseudotropheus, Melanochromis, and Labeotropheus) are generally poor companions: their relentless aggression overwhelms a small, non-confrontational peacock. The most important prohibition is mixing Aulonocara aquilonium with other similar-looking peacocks, especially other Aulonocara species and colour morphs: peacocks hybridize readily in captivity, and the offspring are both fertile and indistinguishable from pure fish to the untrained eye. A species-only tank, or a carefully assembled community where other Aulonocara are visually distinct, is the responsible approach. One breeding colony format works well: a single male kept with three to five females reduces male aggression on any one female and mirrors the loose polygyny seen in the wild.

Breeding follows the standard Malawi peacock pattern and is straightforward once the colony is settled and the water is right. Males in full colour display to females with lateral flashing and quivering; spawning occurs over a chosen sand patch. The female collects the eggs immediately and broods them in her mouth; the male plays no further role. Incubation runs roughly three weeks at 79 °F, after which the female releases free-swimming fry that are large enough to accept powdered fry food or newly hatched brine shrimp. The main keeper mistake at this stage is leaving the female in the display tank during the full brooding period, where harassment from tankmates or a persistent male causes her to swallow or release the brood early. Moving a visibly brooding female to a separate tank, or using a mesh brooding trap, dramatically improves fry survival. Because this is a small, restricted-range species with limited representation in the hobby, maintaining a genetically clean line is worth the extra effort.

Conservation

Aulonocara aquilonium was assessed on the IUCN Red List as Least Concern (assessed 22 June 2018, published 2018; assessor Ad Konings, reviewer Jos Snoeks). The assessment notes that the species is endemic to Lake Malawi and known only from Mdoka and Ngara in the northwest, that the population trend is unknown, and that its single documented threat — occasional, rare collection for the ornamental fish trade (where it is sometimes sold as "Aulonocara auditor") — is minor and not expected to worsen, so the fish does not qualify for a threatened category. This is a down-listing: the species had previously been assessed as Vulnerable in 2006, reflecting how much its perceived security improved once the trade pressure was judged negligible.

That said, the Red List recommends site protection and population monitoring, and the narrow, two-locality range remains the species' real vulnerability. Like all Lake Malawi endemics it depends on the health of the lake's nearshore sandy habitat, and basin reviews document a lake under mounting pressure from over-fishing, from heavy sediment and nutrient loading washing off deforested catchments, and from warming that strengthens stratification and trims the upwelling of deep nutrients. For a sand-sifting, sonar-feeding peacock the most direct of these is sedimentation: silt smothering the rock-sand interface degrades the foraging and spawning ground this fish relies on, and turbidity blunts the visual half of a predator that hunts partly by feel. A range concentrated at a handful of northwestern sites means the species offers little geographic buffer if those particular shores deteriorate.
