Taxonomy & naming
Pseudotropheus sp. "Elongatus Kirondo" is an informal, undescribed taxon: no describing author, no publication date, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. It carries the "elongatus" trade tag, a name element used across several Lake Malawi mbuna genera for elongate-bodied, vertically barred rock cichlids that all trace back to the historical, broadly defined Pseudotropheus of the twentieth century. That history matters here: Li, Konings & Stauffer's 2016 revision in Zootaxa of the "Pseudotropheus elongatus species group" erected the genus Chindongo (type species C. bellicosus) and moved the formally described Pseudotropheus elongatus itself, along with several close relatives, out of Pseudotropheus entirely. Field and hobby databases such as the one used here nonetheless continue to catalogue this Kirondo-collected population under "Pseudotropheus," reflecting how far behind the trade name lags the current taxonomic consensus rather than any claim that this form has been formally assessed and kept in Pseudotropheus by a specialist. Whether it would key to Chindongo or elsewhere if formally examined is not established here.
Morphology
This form is expected to show the "elongatus" complex's characteristic body plan: a notably elongate, laterally compressed shape relative to the stockier build of many other mbuna, an adaptation associated across the complex with threading narrow rock crevices. The colour pattern most consistently reported across "elongatus"-tagged mbuna, in Chindongo and in the older Pseudotropheus usage alike, is a pale blue-grey to yellowish ground colour crossed by several dark vertical bars, though the precise bar count and any locality-specific colour details have not been documented for this particular population. Size has not been separately measured for this form and is presumed to fall within the modest range typical of the elongatus complex, roughly 3.5–4.5 in.
Habitat
Pseudotropheus sp. "Elongatus Kirondo" is documented from Kirondo, Tanzania, on Lake Malawi's northern shore. Like other elongate-bodied mbuna, it is expected to occupy narrow rock crevices and interstitial spaces in the shallow-to-intermediate rocky zone, a niche its body shape is specifically suited to exploit, rather than open rock faces or sand. No dedicated depth record exists for this specific population, so the ranges given here follow the genus- and complex-typical envelope. Water conditions match the lake generally: warm, hard and strongly alkaline.
Feeding
As with other members of the elongatus complex, this form is expected to graze aufwuchs — the mixed mat of filamentous algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria and small invertebrates coating Malawi's rocks — using genus-typical bicuspid-to-tricuspid dentition, with its elongate body letting it work narrower crevices than more robustly built mbuna can access. No feeding study specific to this population has been published, so this account follows the well-documented pattern of the wider elongatus/Chindongo complex rather than direct observation.
Mating
Breeding in this complex is polygynous, with territorial males holding rock-crevice sites and displaying to passing females rather than forming lasting pair bonds. The elongate body and crevice-dwelling habit typical of this group mean males often defend narrower, more linear territories than the more open rock-face sites held by stockier mbuna. Courtship is expected to follow the standard haplochromine pattern, with the male's anal-fin egg-spots drawing the female to peck and fertilise the clutch already held in her mouth.
Breeding
Pseudotropheus sp. "Elongatus Kirondo" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all mbuna in this complex regardless of current genus placement. The female is expected to take fertilised eggs into her mouth following courtship and brood them alone to free-swimming fry, with no paternal care. No clutch data have been published for this specific population; the well-studied Chindongo elongatus, the type species most closely associated with the "elongatus" trade name historically, is documented at a modest adult size around 3.5 in, and this form is presumed to produce a similarly modest clutch, though that is inference rather than a measured count for this population.
In the aquarium
This form has limited documented presence in the general hobby and is known mainly through field and collection-locality records. Where kept, standard husbandry for elongate-bodied mbuna applies: dense rockwork with narrow crevices and gaps the fish can retreat into, hard alkaline water, and a vegetable-leaning, algae-based diet to avoid the bloat risk common in over-fed rift-lake grazers. Keepers should be aware that "elongatus"-tagged mbuna are recorded under more than one genus across different sources and different populations — Chindongo for the formally described species, Pseudotropheus for field forms such as this one in the database used here — and should not assume different "elongatus" populations from different localities and different current genus placements are interchangeable or safe to interbreed.
Conservation
Pseudotropheus sp. "Elongatus Kirondo" has no IUCN Red List assessment, because it has never been formally described and has no valid scientific name available to be assessed. As a rock- and crevice-restricted mbuna from a specific stretch of Tanzanian shoreline, it faces the general pressures common to Lake Malawi's mbuna community — localised collection pressure and habitat disturbance among them — but no dedicated population data exists to characterise its actual conservation status. For context, the formally described member of this complex, Chindongo elongatus (reassigned from Pseudotropheus in 2016), is itself assessed Near Threatened by the IUCN (2018), driven chiefly by sedimentation at its own Tanzanian localities, Mbamba Bay and Hongi Island — well south of Kirondo and not this population. That status does not transfer to this form, but it is a reminder that elongatus-complex mbuna are not automatically low-risk simply because they are common and well known in the aquarium trade.
