Pacaya-Samiria is the largest protected flooded forest in Peru and one of the biggest in the Amazon — a roughly 20,497 mi² wedge of lowland rainforest, oxbow lakes and blackwater rivers caught in the angle where the Marañón and Ucayali rivers come together to form the Amazon proper. It sits in the Department of Loreto, south and west of Iquitos, with no roads in: you reach it by boat from Nauta or Lagunas, and most visitors see it from the deck of a river cruise. The reserve takes its name from its two great interior rivers, the Pacaya and the Samiria, which wind for hundreds of kilometres through a maze of seasonally flooded forest the locals call the 'selva baja' and that biologists call várzea and igapó. Every year the rivers rise several metres, push out across the forest floor, and turn the whole reserve into a single connected sheet of tea-coloured water; every year they fall again and strand fish in the thousands of oxbow lakes — cochas — that pock the floodplain. That flood pulse is the engine of the place. It is why Pacaya-Samiria holds something like 240 species of fish, supplies a large share of the fish eaten in Loreto, and shelters a cichlid community that runs from the metre-long peacock bass down to thumbnail-sized dwarf cichlids living in the leaf litter of a single forest lake.

Geography & hydrology

Pacaya-Samiria occupies the great lowland triangle — the Depresión de Ucamara — enclosed by the Marañón to the north and the Ucayali to the south, just upstream of where the two rivers merge near Nauta to become the Amazon. It is the largest national reserve in Peru at about 20,497 mi² (2,080,000 ha), roughly the size of Wales, and it protects two complete interior river basins: the Pacaya, which drains the southern Ucayali side, and the Samiria, which runs down the middle of the reserve. Both are sluggish, intensely meandering lowland rivers that have been left to wander, throwing off oxbow lakes — cochas — by the thousand as they migrate across an almost flat floodplain.

The defining feature here is not gradient but the annual flood pulse. The reserve lies barely 328–427 ft above sea level, so its hydrology is driven by the rise and fall of the Marañón and Ucayali rather than by local rain. During the high-water season, roughly December to May, the rivers swell by several metres and spill laterally into the forest, submerging the trunks of trees that stand 98–164 ft tall and connecting rivers, channels and cochas into one continuous flooded landscape. In the low-water season, June to November, the water retreats into the channels and lakes, exposing beaches and stranding aquatic life in shrinking pools. Because the rivers are so flat and so mobile, the boundary between 'river' and 'lake' and 'flooded forest' is never fixed — it migrates with the season and, over decades, with the channels themselves.

For visitors and for the roughly 100,000 people who live in and around the reserve, the rivers are the only roads. Cruises and collectors work out of Iquitos and the gateway towns of Nauta and Lagunas, entering through the lower Marañón and the mouths of the Pacaya and Samiria. That isolation — no highway has ever been cut through it — is a large part of why the place remains as intact as it does.

Water & habitat

Pacaya-Samiria is best known as blackwater country: its nickname, the 'Mirrored Forest', comes from the way its dark, tannin-stained rivers throw back a perfect reflection of the canopy and sky. Much of the interior — the Samiria and Pacaya themselves, and the countless forest cochas — carries soft, acidic, tea-coloured water stained by decaying leaf litter, low in dissolved minerals and often poor in oxygen in the depths of the flooded forest. But the reserve is not purely blackwater. The Marañón and Ucayali that bound it are Andean whitewaters, pale and silt-laden, and where their floodwaters push into the reserve they bring nutrient-rich sediment that builds fertile várzea. The result is a mosaic: clear-to-black interior rivers and lakes grading into more turbid, productive whitewater-influenced floodplain along the edges.

The habitats that matter most to fish are the flooded forest and the cochas. When the water is high, fish move up out of the channels and into the inundated forest to feed on falling fruit, seeds, insects and the invertebrates that bloom among the submerged roots and leaf litter — a months-long banquet that drives the growth and spawning of much of the community. As the water drops, that same community is concentrated into the cochas, oxbow lakes that range from open, sunlit sheets of water rimmed with floating meadows of aquatic plants to shaded, closed-canopy forest pools deep in leaf litter and drowned wood. It is a quintessential western-Amazon flooded-forest system, and the reserve's Ramsar designation as a wetland of international importance recognizes exactly this — a vast, still-functioning várzea where the flood pulse, not human plumbing, still sets the rhythm.

For cichlids specifically, this gives a full spread of microhabitats: open lake margins and plant beds for flag cichlids and angelfish; sandy and silty lake bottoms for the eartheaters; submerged wood and root tangles for pike cichlids and acaras; and the deep leaf litter of small, shaded forest pools for the dwarf cichlids.

The cichlid fauna

Pacaya-Samiria's cichlids are a classic lowland western-Amazon assemblage, and they sort themselves cleanly across the reserve's habitats by size and feeding style. The apex is the peacock bass Cichla monoculus, a prized sport and food fish that ambushes smaller fish along sunlit lake edges and channel margins; alongside it the oscar Astronotus ocellatus grows hand-sized and larger in the cochas, and the pike cichlids — Crenicichla proteus and the slimmer, larger Crenicichla lucius — hunt from cover in submerged wood and roots. These are the predators, and in a reserve where fishing supplies much of Loreto's protein, the peacock bass and oscar are also among the cichlids most familiar to the people who live there.

The mid-water and open-habitat fish are the showpieces the aquarium world knows best. The angelfish Pterophyllum scalare drifts among submerged branches and plant stems in quiet water; the flag cichlid Mesonauta mirificus — one of the most-recorded cichlids in the reserve — hangs in loose groups near the surface among floating vegetation; and the deep-bodied severum-group fishes, Heros efasciatus and the chocolate cichlid Hypselecara temporalis, work the structured margins of the lakes. Down on the bottom, the eartheater Satanoperca jurupari sifts mouthfuls of sand for invertebrates, the cupid cichlid Biotodoma cupido browses sandy lake floors, and the broad, plankton-straining Chaetobranchus flavescens filters open water. Among the more generalist acaras, Aequidens tetramerus and the local Bujurquina syspilus — a biparental mouthbrooder of forest pools — and the widespread Cichlasoma amazonarum round out the medium-sized community.

The smallest cichlids are the dwarves, and this is where the reserve and the surrounding Loreto lowlands are richest. Apistogramma cacatuoides — the cockatoo dwarf cichlid — and Apistogramma agassizii are the best-known, living among leaf litter and root tangles in shallow, soft, shaded water, where pairs defend tiny territories and females guard broods in cavities. They share that litter zone with Apistogramma eunotus, part of a regional species complex; the area immediately around the reserve, between Iquitos and Nauta, is also the home of narrowly distributed, recently described dwarfs such as Apistogramma cinilabra, underscoring how much of this dwarf-cichlid diversity is packed into single forest lakes and small drainages. The cichlid fauna as a whole, from metre-long peacock bass to thumbnail Apistogramma, is a compact illustration of how the flood-pulse floodplain partitions its fishes by habitat.

Conservation

Pacaya-Samiria is, on paper, one of the better-protected stretches of the Amazon: a national reserve since 1982, a Ramsar wetland of international importance, and a managed-use protected area where roughly 100,000 people in some 200 communities have recognized rights to fish, hunt and gather. That model — conservation through co-management with the people who live there — is the reserve's central story, and for fish it has had real successes. Community-based management of the paiche (Arapaima gigas) and of the yellow-spotted river turtle (taricaya) has pulled both back from heavy depletion in managed sectors, and the same comanagement framework governs the commercial and subsistence fisheries that take cichlids and other food fish out of the cochas.

The cichlids themselves are, for the most part, not individually threatened. The large food and sport species — peacock bass, oscar, the bigger acaras — are widespread western-Amazon fishes assessed as Least Concern, even if local stocks feel the pressure of a fishery that feeds a region. The conservation nuance sits with the dwarf cichlids: several Apistogramma in and around Loreto are narrow-range, single-locality fishes described only in the last few decades, and at least one regional endemic, Apistogramma cinilabra, has been flagged as potentially endangered precisely because it is known from so few small forest lakes. For these fish the threat is not overfishing but habitat — drainage, deforestation and disturbance of the specific blackwater pools they depend on.

The broader pressures are the familiar Amazonian ones, and they reach a protected reserve from outside its boundaries: oil concessions and pipeline spills in the wider Marañón basin, deforestation and settlement along the rivers, overfishing of the most valuable species, and the long shadow of upstream dam and waterway proposals on the Marañón and Ucayali that would alter the flood pulse the whole system runs on. The case for Pacaya-Samiria is ultimately the case for an intact, still-flooding várzea: its fish diversity — cichlids included — is a direct product of the annual rise and fall of the water and of the thousands of cochas that rhythm fills and empties, and those are exactly what a degraded or re-plumbed floodplain would lose.
