Taxonomy & naming
Copadichromis sp. "Virginalis Gold" has never been formally described and carries no scientific authority or Catalog of Fishes entry; the name is an open-nomenclature trade and field designation built on the standard Lake Malawi convention — genus, "sp.", and a descriptive tag drawn from its resemblance to the virginalis group and its gold breeding colour. It belongs to a tangled cluster of similar small utaka that circulate under names such as Copadichromis virginalis, C. sp. "virginalis kajose", and the taxonomically resolved C. mloto, several of which were only sorted out at the species level by genomic work published in the 2020s. Konings documented "Virginalis Gold" in Cichlids Yearbook Volume 6 as a distinct population found only at Nkanda, explicitly noting that it has repeatedly been confused with the larger, shallower-living C. sp. "virginalis kajose" (also known as "Gome Virginalis") from the southern lake — the two share a generally similar dark body with pale dorsal marking but differ clearly in maximum size and depth range. Whether "Virginalis Gold" is conspecific with true Copadichromis virginalis, with the form now recognised as C. mloto, or is itself a distinct undescribed species has not been resolved; no genetic sampling of the Nkanda population has been published.
Morphology
This is a small utaka by the standards of the virginalis-mloto complex. Konings records live specimens collected in 1994 at not much more than 1.5 in total length, and gives an adult maximum of around 4 in — considerably smaller than the 7 in reported for the similarly patterned "virginalis kajose" (Gome Virginalis) of the southern lake. The body is laterally compressed and relatively deep for a small utaka. Ripe males are dramatic: the entire body runs dark brown to black, and a golden-yellow band runs from the tip of the snout, along the top of the head, and down the dorsal surface of the body to the tail. Excited males superimpose black vertical bars on the dark body, and the very dark anal fin carries five to seven egg-spots arranged in a neat row along its edge. Konings compares the overall effect to the breeding dress of the peacock cichlid Aulonocara maylandi. Females grow almost as large as males and, because they carry a fuller body shape, can appear larger at a glance; they are plain silvery and unspotted, in keeping with the spotless "pure utaka" look shared across the virginalis group.
Habitat
The only documented locality is Nkanda, at the far northern tip of Lake Malawi on the Tanzanian shore — no other population has been reported in the literature. Konings recorded the fish at a depth of 118 ft and deeper, a genuinely deep-water habitat even by the standards of Lake Malawi's rocky-shore cichlids, and well beyond the depth range typically fished by snorkel-based survey work. That depth, more than any single colour trait, is what separates it from the shallower-living "virginalis kajose"/Gome Virginalis population it is most often confused with. As with the rest of the lake's rocky littoral zone, the water at Nkanda is warm, hard and strongly alkaline, and light levels at 118 ft and below are considerably reduced compared with the shallow reef top.
Feeding
No population-specific dietary study has been published for "Virginalis Gold". As a member of the utaka group within Copadichromis, it is presumed to feed as its relatives do: hanging in open water over the reef and picking individual zooplankton — copepods and other small crustaceans — from the water column with a small, highly protrusible mouth, retaining prey on a long row of fine gill rakers. The deep, dim habitat it occupies at Nkanda would put it well below the depth at which visual predation on plankton becomes difficult for many reef fish, which may partly explain why this population has stayed narrow-ranging and poorly collected relative to shallower utaka.
Mating
Konings observed territorial males at Nkanda defending crater-shaped "nests" scraped into the substrate within loose breeding arenas at the 118 ft-plus depth where the population lives — the standard lek-style arrangement typical of open-water Copadichromis, in which males cluster their sites, display in full colour, and females move between them to select a mate. No nest-building behaviour beyond that basic crater form has been documented for this specific population, and courtship sequence details have not been separately recorded, but the pattern follows the genus-wide haplochromine template of male display followed by female-initiated spawning at the chosen site.
Breeding
As in every Copadichromis and every Lake Malawi haplochromine, reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding: the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth immediately after spawning and incubates them there without feeding normally, later releasing free-swimming fry once they are developed enough to fend for themselves. Aquarium keepers who have bred the fish in captivity report males constructing small spawning pits, frequently sited to use the cover of a rock-formed cave, with the crater shape not perfectly round but incorporating part of the surrounding stones for protection — a nest form Konings notes closely resembles what is seen at the wild site. Specific clutch sizes and brooding duration have not been published for this population; genus-typical figures for small Copadichromis run to a few dozen eggs over roughly three weeks of incubation.
In the aquarium
Copadichromis sp. "Virginalis Gold" reaches hobbyists only occasionally, given its narrow, deep-water origin — Konings himself obtained his first live specimens via a Florida importer in 1994, and the fish has remained a specialist import rather than a trade staple since. Because of the depth at which it lives in the wild, keepers who have kept the fish successfully report reducing tank lighting and mixing dark gravel into the substrate to better mimic its dim natural habitat, along with a scattering of stones arranged to form caves; these are used as shelter by both sexes and as the basis for the male's small, cave-associated spawning pits. Water should follow the standard Lake Malawi profile — hard, alkaline (roughly pH 7.7–8.6) and warm (75–82 °F) — and, given the small adult size and generally lower-key temperament reported for this population relative to larger utaka, a modest species or community tank with calm tankmates such as other small Copadichromis or Aulonocara is appropriate rather than a rowdy mbuna setup. As with all Malawi cichlids, a diet weighted toward quality spirulina- or krill-based foods rather than fatty animal protein reduces the risk of Malawi bloat.
Conservation
Copadichromis sp. "Virginalis Gold" has not been evaluated by the IUCN; as an undescribed form it carries no Red List status of any kind — an absence of assessment, not a certificate of safety. Its documented range is a single deep-water site at Nkanda, making it one of the more narrowly known forms in the virginalis-mloto complex. Species and populations confined to one locality are inherently exposed to localised pressures, whether from targeted aquarium collection at depth, disturbance to the reef, or environmental change, even where no specific threat has been formally documented for this population. The wider virginalis-mloto complex to which it is loosely related includes species now assessed as Near Threatened and Data Deficient owing largely to fishery pressure elsewhere in the lake, underlining that the genus as a whole is under active harvest even where an individual undescribed form's own status is unknown.
