Taxonomy & naming
Copadichromis sp. "Firecrest" is not a formally described species. Its trade name closely parallels "Fire-Crest Mloto," a form documented in the literature on Copadichromis mloto — a species with an unusually difficult taxonomic history. Copadichromis mloto was described by T. D. Iles in 1960 from Nkhata Bay and then went essentially unidentified for almost six decades, confused in the field and in fisheries data with the very similar Copadichromis virginalis. A 2023 whole-genome study by Turner and colleagues finally resolved the confusion, and in doing so noted that the fish circulates in the trade under several locality and colour tags — among them "Fire-Crest Mloto" — some of which "may turn out to be undescribed relatives rather than Copadichromis mloto proper." This Gome population, carrying a closely related name, should be read in that same light: a plausible member of the mloto complex, not a confirmed identification. It is treated here as its own undescribed entry rather than folded into Copadichromis mloto.
Morphology
This form is expected to share the slender, streamlined build documented for the "Fire-Crest Mloto" form, distinctly slighter than some other Copadichromis of similar length. That form is reported reaching a maximum of about 4.5 in, somewhat smaller than the nominal Copadichromis mloto’s 5.5 in. Colour is the whole point of the trade name: breeding males in the wider mloto complex turn a dark blue-black over the body with a brilliant metallic-blue head and nape, and the "Fire-Crest" form specifically carries a red-flushed band in the dorsal fin that helps distinguish displaying males from neighbouring look-alikes in the field. Females and juveniles are expected to stay a plain, drab grey-beige, per the wider complex. Whether the Gome population matches this pattern precisely has not been independently confirmed here.
Habitat
The population is documented from Gome, in the southern part of Lake Malawi. The wider Copadichromis mloto complex is unusually deep-dwelling for a Malawi cichlid, recorded in trawls from as shallow as about 59 ft down to over 328 ft, and the "Fire-Crest Mloto" form specifically is reported breeding at depths beyond 98 ft — well past the range most reef-diving photographers or casual snorkelers reach. If this Gome population shares that ecology, it is a genuinely deep-water fish, associated with open water and sand over rocky structure rather than shallow littoral reef. Water conditions otherwise follow the lake-wide standard: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline.
Feeding
As a member of the mloto complex, this population is expected to be a specialist zooplanktivore, picking copepods and other small planktonic animals from open water. The wider utaka group, of which this is a member, is ecologically central to Lake Malawi’s open-water food web and commercially central to its fishery — Copadichromis mloto in particular has been identified as the "true utaka" most heavily targeted by trawl and seine fishing on the lake. No feeding study specific to the Gome population has been published.
Mating
Mating in the mloto complex follows a lek-like pattern in which males build shallow sand-bower craters and display from them in nuptial colour, at depths well below where most divers casually observe them. The "Fire-Crest" form specifically is reported breeding at depths over 98 ft, where its red dorsal-fin marking is one of the characters used to tell displaying males apart from related forms nearby. This population is expected to follow the same pattern, though no observations specific to Gome have been published.
Breeding
Copadichromis sp. "Firecrest" is expected to be a maternal mouthbrooder, like the rest of the genus. After spawning at the male’s bower, the female takes the eggs into her mouth and, drawn to the egg-spot markings on his anal fin, takes in the milt that fertilises the clutch she already holds. She broods the eggs and fry alone, without male assistance, before releasing free-swimming young. Clutch size is not documented for either the wider mloto complex or this specific population; a modest brood of a few dozen eggs is the expectation for a utaka of this size.
In the aquarium
Copadichromis sp. "Firecrest" is an uncommon, specialist fish in the trade, most likely to appear as a wild import collected by divers working at unusually deep sites for Malawi cichlids. That collecting depth is worth keeping in mind: fish adapted to a cool, stable, high-pressure deep-water environment can need a careful, gradual acclimatisation. Once settled, husbandry follows the general open-water utaka template — a tank of at least 59 in with generous swimming room, a sand substrate, and modest rock structure rather than dense cover. Water should be warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, matching the Lake Malawi standard. A single male with several females is the sensible stocking ratio, and diet should be varied, built around a quality pellet or flake plus frozen zooplankton-type foods. Because the mloto/virginalis complex is genuinely tangled, and several trade names within it may be undescribed relatives rather than the same fish, locality data from the importer is worth more than the label alone.
Conservation
Copadichromis sp. "Firecrest" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form, has no Red List status of its own. Worth noting for context: the nominal Copadichromis mloto, to whose complex this form is presumably related, is currently Data Deficient with a decreasing population trend, downgraded from an earlier Least Concern rating in part because the mloto/virginalis complex is so poorly distinguished in fisheries data that its true population trend is essentially unmeasurable from catch records. It is heavily targeted by commercial trawl and beach-seine fishing for the food market rather than the aquarium trade. If this Gome population is part of the same complex, it plausibly faces similar pressure; the honest summary for the population itself is that it is unassessed.
