Andinoacara pulcher, the blue acara, is the steel-and-turquoise cichlid of lowland Trinidad, Venezuela, and Colombia — an aquarium fixture since it first reached Germany in 1906, and one of the easiest South American cichlids to spawn at home. Its familiarity hides a tangled name history: Theodore Gill described it from Trinidad in 1858, and for the next 150 years it drifted through Acara, Aequidens, and Coeruleacara before molecular work settled it into Andinoacara in 2009. The fish anchors the genus's 'pulcher group', and for decades aquarists and ichthyologists alike lumped an arc of look-alike northern-Andean populations under its name — most often confusing it with the Central American Andinoacara coeruleopunctatus. Modern genetics suggests the fish we still call Andinoacara pulcher is almost certainly a cluster of cryptic species awaiting names; strictly, the blue acara is the Trinidad fish and its closest cis-Andean kin. Much tank stock is now line-bred, and the uniformly blue 'electric blue acara' of the trade is a selectively bred colour form rather than a wild fish.

Taxonomy & naming

Theodore Nicholas Gill described the fish in 1858 as Cychlasoma pulchrum, from material collected on Trinidad in the West Indies — the type locality, with a Trinidad specimen later designated the lectotype. Over the next century and a half it worked through a long chain of generic combinations that mirrors the shifting picture of neotropical cichlid relationships: Acara pulchra (Günther, 1862), Astronotus (Acara) pulchra (Eigenmann, 1891), Aequidens pulcher (Eigenmann, 1903), and Coeruleacara pulchra (Kullander, 1983). For most of the twentieth century hobbyists and authors knew it as 'Aequidens' pulcher, the genus often set in quotation marks to flag a provisional assignment. The current name dates to Musilová, Říčan & Novák (2009), whose morphological and molecular phylogeny of the tribe Cichlasomatini erected Andinoacara for this fish and its trans-Andean relatives.

Andinoacara splits into two species groups (Kullander, 1998; Stawikowski & Werner, 1998; reaffirmed by Wijkmark, Kullander & Barriga, 2012). The pulcher group runs across northern South America — from Trinidad west along the Caribbean coast to the northern Pacific drainages of Colombia and adjacent Ecuador, and into the Orinoco basin — while the rivulatus group, which includes the 'green terror', is confined to Pacific-versant rivers from Peru to Ecuador. The two divide on meristics and, diagnostically, on predorsal scaling: a single row of large median scales in the pulcher group versus a median row of gradually smaller, posteriorly overlapping scales in the rivulatus group. The pulcher group holds four nominal species — Andinoacara pulcher (Gill, 1858), Andinoacara latifrons (Steindachner, 1878), Andinoacara coeruleopunctatus (Kner, 1863), and Andinoacara brevirostris (Steindachner, 1880) — and Andinoacara pulcher was long treated as one wide-ranging fish together with the Central American Andinoacara coeruleopunctatus before the two were disentangled.

The live complication is cryptic diversity. Following Musilová et al. (2015), the IUCN circumscribes Andinoacara pulcher as the populations of the cis-Andean Orinoco drainage (including Trinidad), the Maracaibo basin on Venezuela's Atlantic versant, and the upper Magdalena of northern Colombia — but notes that these subpopulations are not monophyletic, so the current concept probably bundles several unnamed species. Field and hobby workers already separate provisional forms such as Andinoacara cf. pulcher 'Venezuela', 'Río Chirgua', and 'Choco' (the last, from the Río Cauca, resembling pulcher but lacking its orange fin margins). The honest reading is the revisers' own: the name Andinoacara pulcher is anchored to the Trinidad fish, denser molecular sampling is expected to split it, and much of what has been sold or reported as 'blue acara' may belong to relatives still awaiting description.

Morphology

The blue acara is a medium-sized, fairly deep-bodied cichlid of the classic Aequidens/Andinoacara build — fusiform but laterally compressed, with a steeply rising forehead and a large mouth. FishBase gives a maximum of 6.5 in total length; Seriously Fish cites a maximum standard length of 5–6 in, and aquarium fish commonly settle around 5–6 in, with wild males reaching the upper end. Its anal fin carries three spines — a character long used to tell Aequidens-type cichlids from the superficially similar Geophagus, which also differs in the gill-raker lobule on its first arch.

Live fish are olive to grey-green, crossed by roughly eight obscure dark transverse bars, with a small dark blotch at the middle of the caudal-fin base that is only faintly ocellated, if at all. The defining feature is the iridescent ornament: bright blue-green spots and wavy lines spangle the cheeks, gill covers, and flanks, intensifying to an electric turquoise sheen — the trait that earns the fish its English name, and that the Latin epithet pulcher ('beautiful') anticipates. Many wild and quality aquarium fish also carry orange to red margins on the dorsal fin. Sexual dimorphism is real but subtle: males grow larger, become noticeably more colourful (turning strikingly blue in the breeding season), and develop slightly pointed, elongated tips to the dorsal and anal fins, while females stay smaller and rounder in profile. The much-marketed solid-blue 'electric blue acara' is a selectively bred colour form, not a wild phenotype, and Seriously Fish cautions that many hobby fish are now inbred or hybridized shadows of wild stock.

Habitat

Under its current concept, Andinoacara pulcher is a lowland fish of the Caribbean (Atlantic) slope of northern South America and the Orinoco system. The IUCN maps it across the cis-Andean Orinoco drainage including the island of Trinidad off Venezuela's north coast, the Maracaibo (Catatumbo) basin of western Venezuela, and the upper Magdalena drainage of northern Colombia, for an estimated extent of occurrence of about 970,11 mi². FishBase records it roughly between 11°N–5°N and 73°W–60°W. The genus name notwithstanding, this is no Andean highland fish but a creature of the warm lowlands draining off the cordilleras.

It is a striking habitat generalist. The species turns up in clear, free-flowing streams and rivers as well as turbid, stagnant standing waters, plus swamps and seasonal floodplains where it grows more abundant in the rainy season; in Trinidad it was the single most abundant fish across sixteen northern-slope stream sites, occupying pools, riffles, undercut banks, and high-flow reaches down to depths near 6 ft. Tellingly, it persists in ditches, drains, and heavily modified channels — a resilience that recurs in the literature from Trinidad to the Magdalena. Recorded water chemistry is broad and near-neutral to alkaline: FishBase lists a pH range of about 6.5–8.0 and hardness up to roughly 25 dH, with a reported temperature band around 64–73 °F, while aquarium references widen the comfortable range to about 72–82 °F. Spawning sites are excavated in sandy or muddy bottoms, and the fish favours structure — rocks, submerged wood, and leaf litter — for cover and breeding.

Feeding

The blue acara is an opportunistic omnivore that forages over and through the substrate, sitting at an estimated trophic level near 3.3 on FishBase. A stomach-content study of the species (locally the 'cocobolo') in the Ciénaga Grande de Lorica on Colombia's Magdalena system found a diet spanning vegetal matter, small-bodied fishes, detritus, aquatic insects, snails, and worms, with older general accounts emphasising worms, crustaceans, and insects. The broad mouth and protrusible jaws let it pick benthic invertebrates off the bottom and take small fish, and its readiness to eat plant material and detritus alongside live prey is exactly the catholic strategy that lets it thrive across such varied waters. That flexibility also makes it a useful biological control agent — it has been employed to eat mosquito larvae — and, where the broader 'blue acara' complex has been introduced abroad through the aquarium trade, an effective competitor with native fishes. In aquaria it accepts almost anything offered, from prepared pellets to bloodworm, brine shrimp, and chopped mussel or prawn, though keepers are advised to include vegetable matter and to avoid mammalian red meats.

Mating

Andinoacara pulcher forms monogamous pairs and turns territorial around the nest, especially as fish mature and the breeding season nears. Pairs usually form from a group: the reliable hobby method is to raise six or so young together and let a pair settle naturally, after which the bonded pair drives other fish from their chosen patch. Within the pair the male is the larger, more intensely coloured fish, taking on a vivid blue cast during reproduction and defending the wider territory while a spawning site is chosen and cleaned. Courtship centres on that site — a flat rock, a broad plant leaf, or a pit dug in the substrate — which both partners prepare together.

Wild reproductive data come chiefly from Colombia, where the species spawns over a prolonged season rather than in a single annual event: females mature at around 3.5 in total length and release their eggs in multiple partial spawns, behaviour that fits the floodplain populations peaking in the rains. A point of comparative interest from the genus revision is that pulcher-group cichlids have been seen laying eggs on movable substrates — leaves and loose objects — recalling the leaf-spawning habit of the related genus Bujurquina, whereas rivulatus-group species deposit on fixed structures. Unlike Bujurquina, though, every pulcher-group species whose breeding has been documented is a substrate brooder that does not take its larvae into the mouth.

Breeding

This is a biparental, open/substrate-spawning cichlid and one of the simplest South American cichlids to breed — long a beginner's introduction to raising cichlid fry. Once the pair has cleaned the spawning surface, the female lays a line of adhesive eggs and the male follows to fertilise them, the two alternating until the clutch is complete; aquarium clutches run up to roughly 200 eggs, while a Colombian field study estimated mean fecundity near 954 oocytes released in successive partial spawns over a long season. Both parents guard the brood with a flexible division of labour — typically the female tends and fans the eggs while the male patrols the territory, the roles sometimes swapping. The eggs hatch in about two to five days (around 48–72 hours under warm aquarium conditions), and the parents move the wriggling larvae between pits dug in the substrate until, after roughly three more days, the fry become free-swimming. Parental care of the mobile fry runs about two weeks before the pair may spawn again; FishBase notes that, faced with a threatened brood, a parent will take the young briefly into its mouth for protection before releasing them. The species is undemanding to spawn: slightly soft, near-neutral water (about pH 6.5–7.0), temperatures around 77–82 °F, and flat stones or broad leaves as spawning sites are enough, with conditioning on live and frozen foods bringing pairs into readiness.

In the aquarium

The blue acara has been in the hobby since at least 1906, and it earns its keep: colourful, personable, manageable in size, and forgiving of the slightly imperfect water a beginner tends to produce. It is one of the better first cichlids you can buy.

Tank: a pair is comfortable in 25 US gal, though a larger footprint of 30 US gal and up is preferable once the fish are conditioned and holding a breeding territory. Give them fine sand or smooth gravel to sift and dig lightly, smooth rocks and flat slabs as potential spawning surfaces, driftwood or bogwood for cover, and robust or floating plants — dense planting is welcome and comes to little harm, since the blue acara is mild on greenery compared with larger American cichlids. Run good filtration at moderate flow and keep up regular partial water changes; the fish is hardy but does best in stable, well-oxygenated water.

Water: forgiving across the wild range. The species spans pH 6.5–8.0 and hardness up to about 25 dH in nature, so moderately hard, slightly alkaline tap water is perfectly adequate. Hold 72–82 °F, toward the upper half of that band for conditioning and breeding; it tolerates cooler water down to about 64 °F without harm, but prolonged cold dulls its colour and activity.

Tankmates: not an aggressive fish by cichlid standards outside breeding. A single fish or non-breeding pair suits peaceful to semi-aggressive community species of similar size — larger tetras, barbs, livebearers, corydoras, peaceful plecos, and other non-cichlid South Americans. Avoid small fin-nippers and very timid fish that a settled pair will bully once it claims a corner. Other non-Andinoacara cichlids of similar or larger size can work, but conspecifics and close relatives need extra space and sight-breaks to diffuse aggression.

Buying: the name is a minefield. The 'green terror' properly belongs to Andinoacara rivulatus (formerly Aequidens rivulatus), a larger, more aggressive Pacific-versant fish from Ecuador and Peru that is routinely mislabelled as blue acara — especially as smaller, drabber juveniles — and Andinoacara sapayensis, the Sapayas terror, is confused the same way. The key marks: Andinoacara pulcher stays smaller (to about 6 in) and shows orange to red fin margins, whereas Andinoacara rivulatus reaches 8–10 in, carries more iridescent gold-green scaling on the flanks, and is noticeably harder on tankmates. Bear in mind, too, that much shop stock is now captive-bred or inbred, and the uniformly blue 'electric blue acara' is a selectively bred colour morph, not a wild fish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Andinoacara pulcher as Least Concern (assessor T.J. Lyons; last assessed 3 April 2020, amended version published 2022). The species is broadly distributed across the Atlantic-slope drainages of Trinidad, Venezuela, and Colombia, with an estimated extent of occurrence of about 970,11 mi², is highly abundant where it occurs, and — crucially — persists in severely degraded and modified habitat, so there is no evidence of a range-wide decline. It carries no CITES listing. The assessment does flag the unresolved taxonomy as a research priority: because the current concept is non-monophyletic and probably contains cryptic species, future splits could redraw the range, and the assessors recommend work on both taxonomy and threats.

The pressures on its waters are the familiar lowland-tropical ones. In Trinidad, industrial development, urbanization, wetland dredging, and extensive limestone quarrying degrade aquatic habitat; in Venezuela, deforestation running to more than 160,000 hectares a year is driven mainly by agricultural expansion; and in Colombia, mining and refining of coal, gold, and heavy metals have polluted the Magdalena drainage. Against all of this the blue acara's adaptability is its best defence — it is documented surviving in ditches, drains, and otherwise spoiled streams that exclude more sensitive fishes. The species is also locally eaten and may be fished commercially, and it remains a staple of the international ornamental trade, though the volume of wild harvest is unknown; FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability low. The conservation story here is less about a fish at risk than about a tough, widespread generalist whose taxonomy still outpaces our certainty about how many species the name conceals.
