Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Victoria — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Haplochromis piceatus, the pitch-black fulu, is a small zooplankton-feeding cichlid endemic to Lake Victoria and one of the hundreds of haplochromine species that make up that lake's celebrated 'species flock'. A member of the Yssichromis group of open-water zooplanktivores, it was among the species hit hardest by the introduction of the Nile perch — it has become extremely rare or possibly extinct in the wild, is assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, and now survives largely in a managed network of North American public aquaria.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis piceatus was described in 1969 by the British ichthyologist Peter Humphry Greenwood, the foremost authority on the Lake Victoria cichlids, together with J.M. Gee, in part VII of Greenwood's long-running 'A revision of the Lake Victoria Haplochromis species' (Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History), Zoology series). It was described in the same work as its close relative Haplochromis laparogramma, and both belong to the cluster of slender, silvery, open-water plankton-eaters that Greenwood later (1979, 1980) gathered into the subgenus — and, in his scheme, genus — Yssichromis. Modern usage is divided: the lake's haplochromines are conventionally returned to the catch-all genus Haplochromis pending a comprehensive revision of the flock, and authors commonly write the name as Haplochromis (Yssichromis) piceatus to flag the affinity. We keep the species under Haplochromis here, the form used by FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes. Greenwood diagnosed the Yssichromis zooplanktivores by features of the syncranium and jaws; van Oijen and Witte's later taxonomic work on the Mwanza Gulf zooplanktivore complex (1996, and the ZooKeys revision by van Rijssel and colleagues) treats piceatus as one of a tight knot of similar species — alongside laparogramma, pyrrhocephalus and heusinkveldi — that can be told apart only by careful examination of dentition and head morphology. The species is endemic to Lake Victoria; the type material was collected from the lake's Tanzanian waters.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of about 3.5 in standard length, and like most of the lake's open-water haplochromines it has a slender, laterally compressed, fairly elongate body built for swimming in midwater rather than for grubbing on the bottom. The specific name is a direct description of its colour — Latin piceus, 'pitch', so piceatus means 'smeared with pitch' (ETYFish notes this referred to the dark coloration of the preserved type specimens). In life the species is strongly sexually dichromatic in the haplochromine manner: breeding males are a dark, bluish-black ('pitch-black', the source of its hobby name) set off by orange or reddish fins, while females and non-breeding fish are a plainer silvery grey. It is closely similar in build to several other Lake Victoria zooplanktivores and is not easily distinguished from them in the field. Its trophic morphology is that of a plankton-picker — comparatively large eyes and a fine-meshed gill-raker arrangement suited to straining small prey from the water column — and it is precisely these head and gill structures that researchers have tracked over time as the lake's environment changed (see Feeding and Conservation).

Habitat

Haplochromis piceatus is found only in Lake Victoria, the vast, shallow East African lake shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya (maximum depth only about 276 ft, far shallower than the rift lakes Tanganyika and Malawi). The species is a fish of the sublittoral open water rather than the rocky shore. FishBase records it from a relatively sheltered gulf over a mud bottom, at a depth range of roughly 46–59 ft, and it was a characteristic member of the zooplanktivore community of the Mwanza Gulf, the well-studied southern arm of the lake where Dutch and Tanzanian teams (the Haplochromis Ecology Survey Team, HEST, based at Leiden) carried out decades of trawl sampling. Lake Victoria water is warm, with surface temperatures generally in the range of about 73–81 °F, and moderately alkaline; published limnological figures for the lake put pH in the rough band of 7.2 to 9.0 and conductivity around 90–100 µS/cm. Since the 1980s much of the lake — and the Mwanza Gulf in particular — has suffered eutrophication, falling water transparency and reduced dissolved oxygen at depth, changes that bear directly on a visually-oriented open-water species like this one.

Feeding

Haplochromis piceatus is a zooplanktivore — a midwater feeder that picks small crustaceans and other zooplankton from the open water — and it was one of the species that made up the diverse zooplankton-eating guild of the Mwanza Gulf sublittoral, a guild that before the Nile-perch upsurge accounted for a large share of the haplochromine biomass there. FishBase lists its trophic level at about 3.3 and notes that examined guts also contained bottom mud and dipteran (probably chironomid midge) pupae, a reminder that these 'zooplanktivores' take some benthic and emerging insect prey as well as drifting plankton. The species is of special interest to evolutionary biologists because the Leiden/HEST group used it, alongside its relatives, to study how Lake Victoria cichlids respond to a disturbed environment. After the Nile-perch invasion and the lake's eutrophication, several surviving zooplanktivores shifted diet and remodelled their heads and gills; piceatus, however, is grouped with the species that did not successfully recover, and van Rijssel and Witte found that its head-surface-to-caudal-peduncle proportions changed in the opposite direction from the rebounding species — part of the evidence that it failed to adapt to the new lake.

Mating

Like the great majority of the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock, Haplochromis piceatus is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder with no lasting pair bond. Detailed wild courtship observations for this particular species are not published, but the pattern across the flock — and the one seen in captive piceatus — is the standard haplochromine system: males come into bright nuptial colour (here the diagnostic bluish-black body with orange fins), display to and court passing females, and fertilisation takes place after the female takes the eggs into her mouth. Bright male coloration and clear water are central to mate choice in these fish, which is one reason the lake's loss of transparency to eutrophication is thought to disrupt their reproduction: when females can no longer reliably distinguish males by colour, mate recognition breaks down and species can hybridise. The IUCN assessment lists exactly this — hybridisation driven by decreased water transparency — as a potential threat to piceatus, on top of direct predation.

Breeding

Haplochromis piceatus is a maternal mouthbrooder: the female holds the fertilised eggs in her mouth and continues to carry the hatched young there until they have absorbed their yolk sacs and can be released as free-swimming fry, with no contribution from the male after spawning. Clutch sizes for this species do not appear to be separately published; among small Lake Victoria zooplanktivorous haplochromines of this size, broods are typically modest — on the order of a few dozen eggs — consistent with the small mouth of a 3.5 in female (treat this as a genus-typical figure rather than a measured value for piceatus). In captivity the species has proven straightforward to breed: the public-aquarium retrospective by McMullin and colleagues describes adults as relatively small and easy to spawn, and notes that brooding females do best in tanks with fine sand or no substrate (rather than gravel) so that the mouthbrooding cycle is not disrupted. Captive populations in North American breeding programmes have been propagated through many generations with only a slow loss of genetic diversity, indicating reliable, repeatable reproduction under managed care.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis piceatus is rarely kept by private hobbyists — it has little of the colour-variant glamour of the rock-dwelling Malawi and Tanganyika cichlids, and most fish in trade reach keepers only through conservation channels rather than commercial import. Where it is kept, however, it is documented as an undemanding, adaptable aquarium fish: the 20-year husbandry retrospective from North American public aquaria reports that it tolerates a wide range of water parameters and is easy to breed, which is precisely why it became a flagship of cichlid conservation aquaculture. Its real significance in the hobby is conservation. Under the late Les Kaufman's initiative, captive 'ark' populations of Lake Victoria haplochromines were established in North America, and piceatus is maintained in an Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan (SSP) and is a recognised CARES Preservation Program species (the hobby name 'pitch-black fulu' comes from this conservation literature). Practical husbandry that follows from those programmes: keep it warm (mid-20s °C) and at the moderately hard, alkaline, near-neutral-to-basic pH the lake provides; use fine sand or a bare bottom rather than gravel so mouthbrooding females are not disturbed; and keep it in a group, since these are social, schooling open-water fish. As with all Victoria haplochromines, the two husbandry watch-points are aggression among males in cramped quarters and the temptation to hybridise it with other haplochromines — for a species being maintained for conservation, single-species (or carefully managed) tanks and good record-keeping matter. Note also that captive SSP fish have at times carried chronic Mycobacterium infections, an animal-health concern flagged in the public-aquarium literature.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis piceatus as Vulnerable (criterion D2), in an assessment by F. Witte, M.P. de Zeeuw and E. Brooks dated 31 March 2010, with the population trend listed as unknown. The assessment names the principal threat as predation by the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus) — described as a potentially reversible pressure — together with a secondary threat of hybridisation as decreased water transparency, from eutrophication and erosion-driven sedimentation, interferes with the visual cues females use to recognise mates. The reality on the ground is bleaker than 'Vulnerable' alone conveys: this is one of the Mwanza Gulf zooplanktivores that did not recover after the Nile-perch boom, and the Leiden researchers who have monitored the lake longest (Witte and colleagues, 2000, 2007; van Rijssel & Witte) classed piceatus among the species that are now extremely rare or possibly extinct in the wild. That makes the managed captive populations in public aquaria more than a curiosity — for a Lake Victoria cichlid that may no longer have a viable wild population, the studbook fish are a genuine genetic ark. The broader backdrop is the collapse and partial, altered recovery of the entire Lake Victoria haplochromine flock, in which an estimated half of the more than 500 historic species were lost following Nile-perch predation and the eutrophication of the lake during the late twentieth century.
