Taxonomy & naming
The fish was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1911 as Tilapia simotes, on a third collection of fishes made by Dr. E. Bayon in Uganda in 1909-1910 and reported in the Annali del Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Genova. The syntype series is split between the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH 1911.3.3.156-163, including a skeleton) and the Genoa museum (MSNG 12396-98); Tortonese's 1963 type catalogue later treated one Genoa specimen as the holotype. Boulenger's type material came from two sites on the Victoria Nile near Jinja, Uganda: Kakindu and the now-submerged Ripon Falls. The name has had an unsettled history. Van Oijen and colleagues (1991) regarded simotes as a junior synonym of Haplochromis nigricans (Boulenger 1906), the type species of the algae-scraping lineage. Seehausen, Lippitsch, Bouton and Zwennes then resurrected it as a valid species in their landmark 1998 revision of the Lake Victoria rock cichlids ('Mbipi, the rock-dwelling cichlids of Lake Victoria'), placing it in the genus Neochromis. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes follows that act, listing the current valid status as Neochromis simotes (Boulenger 1911); FishBase and several regional checklists retain it under the broad, long-used genus Haplochromis, which is how it is headed here. Neochromis is one of the rock-restricted, algae-grazing genera split from the old catch-all Haplochromis, and simotes sits firmly within that aufwuchs-feeding radiation.
Morphology
Haplochromis simotes is a small cichlid: FishBase records a maximum of about 3.5 in standard length, drawn from the Seehausen et al. (1998) revision, making it a modestly sized member of the flock. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed in the typical haplochromine plan. Meristic counts from FishBase give 15 to 16 dorsal spines and 9 to 10 dorsal soft rays, 3 anal spines and 9 anal soft rays, and 29 to 30 vertebrae. The specific name points to the head: simotes means 'snub-' or 'flat-nosed,' and ETYFish suggests Boulenger may have been alluding to the broadly rounded, blunt snout, a profile shared with the rock-grazing Neochromis as a group and one reason the lineage is sometimes likened to Lake Tanganyika's Tropheus. Live coloration of Ugandan fish has been described in regional accounts as striking, with bright blue flanks and an orange dorsal fin in nuptial males. As in essentially all haplochromines, the species is expected to be sexually dimorphic, with brightly coloured, anal-fin egg-spot-bearing territorial males and drabber, silvery-brown females; precise dimorphism data specific to simotes have not been published, and the description was based on preserved material that does not preserve nuptial colour.
Habitat
Haplochromis simotes belongs to the Lake Victoria Basin and was originally collected from the Victoria Nile at the lake's northern outflow near Jinja, Uganda, at Kakindu and the former Ripon Falls (the latter drowned by the Owen Falls/Nalubaale dam in the mid-twentieth century). Regional checklists report the species from Lake Victoria and Lake Kyoga as well as the connecting Nile reach. The IUCN assessment is more conservative, noting it is known only from the type locality at Kakindu and from Ripon Falls, both on the Victoria Nile near Jinja. As a member of the rock-dwelling Neochromis group it is associated with rocky substrates in shallow, well-oxygenated shoreline and riverine habitat where epilithic algae grow; these are precisely the fast-flowing, rocky 'mbipi' biotopes that the Seehausen team studied. FishBase classifies it as a demersal, tropical freshwater fish. No depth profile has been published specifically for simotes, but the rock-dwelling algae scrapers of Lake Victoria are shallow-water fishes that live within roughly the upper few metres of the rocky littoral, so a depth band of about 0–20 ft is the reasonable habitat envelope. Lake Victoria's surface waters are warm and hard-alkaline, typically around 23-27 degrees C with pH ranging from near 7.2 up to about 9.0; no in-situ chemistry was recorded for this particular species at collection.
Feeding
Haplochromis simotes is, by the ecology of its genus, an epilithic algae scraper, the trophic guild that defines Neochromis. These fishes work the rock surfaces of the littoral with short, stout jaws and rows of bicuspid or specialised teeth, rasping the dense mat of attached algae and associated micro-organisms (the aufwuchs) from stone, much as Tropheus does in Lake Tanganyika; for that resemblance regional accounts have called simotes the 'Tropheus of Lake Victoria.' FishBase gives an estimated trophic level of about 3.3, a figure modelled from close relatives rather than measured from gut contents, which is consistent with a grazer that also ingests the small invertebrates living within the algal turf. No dedicated stomach-content study of simotes itself appears in the literature, so the diet is inferred from its placement in the algae-scraping lineage rather than directly documented. In the rocky-shore community these scrapers are abundant primary consumers, converting attached algae into fish biomass and competing with and partitioning resources among the many other haplochromine grazers sharing the same reefs.
Mating
Direct behavioural observations of Haplochromis simotes have not been published, so its mating biology is read from the well-studied rock-dwelling haplochromines it belongs to. In that group, mature males hold and defend small territories on or among the rocks and develop intense nuptial colours, here reported as bright blue with an orange dorsal fin. A territorial male courts passing females with lateral displays and quivering, presenting the yellow or orange egg-spots on his anal fin. There is no lasting pair bond: fertilisation is brief and the male's contribution effectively ends at spawning. Mate choice in these visually driven cichlids is strongly colour-based, and work on related Lake Victoria rock cichlids has shown that female preference for male colour, sharpened by clear water, is a principal engine of the flock's explosive speciation, while the loss of water clarity from eutrophication blurs those signals and erodes reproductive isolation between forms.
Breeding
Like all haplochromines of the Lake Victoria flock, Haplochromis simotes is a maternal mouthbrooder. After the male fertilises the eggs, the female takes the clutch into her mouth and broods it there, the eggs hatching and the larvae developing in the buccal cavity over a period of roughly two to three weeks before the free-swimming fry are released; in many of these species the female continues to shelter the young in her mouth at the first sign of danger for some days afterward. No clutch count has been published for simotes specifically. Rock-dwelling Lake Victoria haplochromines of its size are small-clutch brooders, typically carrying on the order of ten to forty eggs, the trade-off these fishes make for the protection that oral incubation provides; that genus-typical figure is the best available guide for simotes pending direct data. Spawning is not known to be tightly seasonal in the warm, stable equatorial waters of the lake. The species has not, on the available record, been the subject of a documented captive breeding programme of its own.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis simotes is essentially never kept in the aquarium hobby. It is a small, narrowly distributed Lake Victoria endemic with no established presence in the ornamental trade, no recognised common or trade name, and no body of husbandry experience to draw on; what little is written about keeping its close relatives stands in for it only by analogy. Several other rock-dwelling Lake Victoria algae scrapers in the same lineage, such as Neochromis omnicaeruleus, the blue scraper cichlid, are maintained by specialist Victorian-cichlid keepers, and the general requirements would apply here: a hard, alkaline aquarium (pH around 7.5-8.5) at roughly 24-27 degrees C, a robust rockwork aquascape that mimics the shoreline reef and provides territorial breaks, and a vegetable-based diet built around spirulina and algae rather than rich protein, since a dedicated grazer fed too heavily on meaty foods is prone to digestive disease. These are pugnacious, male-territorial fishes best kept with a surplus of females to spread aggression. None of this should be read as a recommendation to seek the species out: it is a conservation-sensitive fish that is not in the trade, and the honest position is that it is a wild ecological specialist rather than an aquarium subject.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis simotes as Data Deficient (assessed 1 April 2010 by F. Witte and M.P. de Zeeuw; published 2016, as Haplochromis simotes), reflecting how little is known of its present distribution and population. The assessment records it from only two closely spaced sites on the Victoria Nile near Jinja, Uganda, and notes an unknown population trend. The wider context is the catastrophe that overtook the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock in the late twentieth century. The Nile perch (Lates niloticus), a large predator introduced to the lake in the 1950s and 1960s, expanded explosively from the 1980s; coupled with intensifying eutrophication, declining water clarity and heavy fishing pressure, its predation drove the collapse of hundreds of endemic haplochromine species, many of which were lost before they could be properly studied. The rock-dwelling algae scrapers fared somewhat better than the open-water forms because rocky refuges offered some protection, and parts of the haplochromine community have partially recovered as perch stocks were fished down. Whether simotes persists in viable numbers, and where, is genuinely unresolved, which is exactly why the species sits in the Data Deficient category rather than a defined threat category. It carries no CITES or CMS listing.
