Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis cinctus was described in 1969 by the British ichthyologist Peter Humphry Greenwood, working with J. M. Gee, in Part VII of their long-running revision of the Lake Victoria Haplochromis species (Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History), Zoology, volume 18, number 1). The description rests on a slim type series: a holotype (BMNH 1968.8.30.13) and five paratypes (BMNH 1968.8.30.14–18) housed in the Natural History Museum, London, all taken near Mwama Island in the Ugandan waters of Lake Victoria at a trawled depth of 70–200 feet (roughly 69–200 ft). Greenwood was the central figure in untangling the lake's enormous cichlid radiation, and his series of revisions carved the unwieldy genus Haplochromis into a framework of species groups. The name remains valid as Haplochromis cinctus Greenwood & Gee, 1969, and the species was retained under Haplochromis in the standard CLOFFA checklist (van Oijen et al., 1991). The wider nomenclatural backdrop matters here: many of the lake's haplochromines have since been reassigned by later workers to satellite genera (Yssichromis, Pundamilia, Mbipia, Paralabidochromis and others) as the flock's relationships were re-examined, but cinctus has not been formally moved, and the conventional Haplochromis heading is kept here. The species belongs to the monophyletic Lake Victoria superflock of haplochromine cichlids, one of the fastest and most spectacular vertebrate radiations known.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid: the largest of the type specimens measured about 3.5 in in standard length, and the species was never reported at any larger size. In overall build it is a typical small-bodied haplochromine — laterally compressed, with the single continuous dorsal fin and the spiny anal fin shared across the genus, and almost certainly the row of orange-to-yellow ocelli (egg-spots) on the anal fin that males of the flock use in courtship. The species epithet cinctus is Latin for 'girdled' or 'banded', pointing to the dark vertical barring or banded flank pattern that gave the fish its name in Greenwood and Gee's account. Beyond size and the banded patterning, detailed coloration and dimorphism were not extensively documented, because the species is known from so few preserved trawl specimens rather than from living, breeding fish. As with most haplochromines, the sexes were almost certainly dimorphic in life — breeding males carrying bright nuptial colour and the anal egg-spots, females and non-breeding fish a duller, more cryptic livery — but no living-colour description was published for cinctus, so this is inferred from the group rather than recorded for the species itself.
Habitat
Haplochromis cinctus is endemic to Lake Victoria, the largest of the African Great Lakes, shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya; the species has been recorded in surveys in Tanzanian and Ugandan waters. Unlike the many rock- and shore-dwelling haplochromines that hobbyists know, cinctus is an offshore, deep-water fish. FishBase gives a depth range of 43–197 ft and classes it as benthopelagic, and the type series was trawled at 70–200 feet (about 69–200 ft) near Mwama Island. The six type specimens came from a single trawl haul that passed over both hard and soft substrates, so the fish appears to have ranged over mixed offshore bottoms rather than being tied to one substrate type. Lake Victoria is a large, shallow, well-mixed tropical lake; its open waters are alkaline and warm, with surface pH typically in the high-7 to 9 range and temperatures generally around 73–81 °F, though the deeper water this species occupied is cooler and, critically, far more vulnerable to the oxygen depletion that has spread through the lake's depths since the mid-20th century.
Feeding
The little dietary information that exists points to an algae-grazing, low-trophic-level fish. The one type specimen whose gut was examined had its stomach and intestine packed with blue-green algae (cyanobacteria), diatoms and other algaceous material. FishBase accordingly estimates a trophic level of about 2.0 — effectively a primary consumer feeding directly on plant material and microalgae rather than on animal prey. Within the elaborate trophic partitioning of the Lake Victoria flock, where coexisting haplochromine species divide the food base into detritivores, algae-scrapers, phytoplanktivores, zooplanktivores, insectivores, mollusc-crushers, prawn-eaters, scale-eaters and piscivores, cinctus sits at the herbivorous, bottom-of-the-web end as an algae and diatom feeder over offshore substrates. This fine-grained dietary specialization, repeated across hundreds of species, is exactly what allowed so many cichlids to coexist in one lake — and also what made the flock so exposed when conditions changed.
Mating
No courtship or social behaviour was specifically recorded for Haplochromis cinctus, but its reproductive biology can be placed confidently within the well-studied pattern of the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock. These are maternal mouthbrooders with polygynous, lek-like mating: males establish and defend small display territories and court passing females with vigorous lateral displays and quivering, using the anal-fin egg-spots as a visual lure. Females, which are not territorial in the same way, move among displaying males and choose mates. In Lake Victoria, male nuptial colour is a central axis of this mate choice, and divergence in male coloration combined with female preference is thought to have driven much of the flock's explosive speciation — and to break down under the turbid, light-poor conditions that eutrophication has imposed on parts of the lake. For a deep-water species like cinctus, the specifics of where and how males displayed are unknown, but the maternal, mouthbrooding, mate-choice system is the safe expectation.
Breeding
Like essentially all Lake Victoria haplochromines, Haplochromis cinctus is a maternal mouthbrooder: the female takes the fertilized eggs into her mouth and broods them there through hatching and the early free-swimming larval stage, releasing the fry once they are developed and re-sheltering them in her mouth when threatened. No clutch count, egg size or developmental timing was published for cinctus specifically. Across the flock, these small mouthbrooding haplochromines are low-fecundity fish that trade egg number for parental investment, typically carrying broods on the order of a few dozen eggs (commonly tens, into the low hundreds at the larger-bodied end), with the female providing all the care and the male none beyond fertilization. Maternal mouthbrooding gives the eggs and fry strong protection from predation, but it could not buffer the flock against the wholesale predation pressure that arrived with the Nile perch, nor against the loss of the clear-water conditions on which their colour-based breeding system depends.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis cinctus is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense and is, to all intents, unavailable to hobbyists. It is known from a small number of museum trawl specimens, lives in deep offshore water rather than the accessible rocky shallows, and is assessed as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) — so there is no established hobby strain and no realistic prospect of collecting it. This stands in contrast to a handful of more robust, shallow-water Lake Victoria haplochromines (for example the so-called 'Victorian' Haplochromis types and species such as Haplochromis nyererei / Pundamilia nyererei) that conservation-minded aquarists do maintain in captivity. Those species need hard, alkaline water (pH around 7.5–8.5, warm temperatures near 75–81 °F), generous tanks, and management of the intense male aggression typical of the flock. None of that husbandry can be applied to cinctus itself, which no one keeps; the honest statement is simply that it is a wild, deep-water species that has never been part of the aquarium hobby and may no longer survive in the lake.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis cinctus as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct), under criterion C2a(ii), assessed on 31 March 2010 by Witte, de Zeeuw and Brooks, with a decreasing population trend. The 'Possibly Extinct' tag reflects that the species has not been reliably recorded in recent surveys and may already have been lost. Its decline is the story of the Lake Victoria cichlid flock as a whole: the deliberate introduction of the predatory Nile perch (Lates niloticus), which boomed from the 1980s and consumed vast numbers of haplochromines; severe eutrophication and the resulting oxygen depletion of deeper water, which is especially lethal to a deep-living fish like cinctus and which also clouded the lake and eroded the light-dependent mate-choice that keeps species distinct; intensive fishing; and pollution from domestic, industrial and agricultural sources. The flock lost a large fraction of its several-hundred species over a few decades — one of the most catastrophic vertebrate extinction events of modern times. Some haplochromine trophic groups have shown partial recovery as Nile perch numbers fell under fishing pressure, but the deep-water specialists were among the hardest hit, and there is no confirmation that this particular species persists.
