Taxonomy & naming
Despite decades in the aquarium trade, this fish has never been formally described, so it has no valid scientific name, no describing author and no year — it is correctly written in open nomenclature as Maylandia staufferi (equivalently Metriaclima sp. 'msobo'). Any binomial of the form 'Maylandia msobo (Konings, 2003)' is spurious: no such description exists in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the fish has no FishBase species page, and it is treated as an undescribed form throughout the literature, including Ad Konings's own Stuart Grant / M.K. Oliver database (malawi.si). The trade label 'Msobo' itself carries no linguistic meaning; according to African Diving Ltd — the collecting operation that first brought the fish out, from Lundo Island — the name was simply invented by playing with letters. Konings recognises three closely allied forms under the name: sp. 'msobo' Magunga (much the most common in the hobby), sp. 'msobo' Membe Deep, and sp. 'msobo heteropictus' from the Lundo area, the last being the species' southern ecological counterpart. Before settling on 'Msobo', the Magunga fish circulated under a tangle of provisional trade names — Pseudotropheus 'Deep Magunga', 'Deep Magunga Red', 'Deep Tanzania' and 'Magunga Red' — which is why old stock lists and forum posts can be confusing. The species belongs to the zebra complex of mbuna, the group that most workers place in a genus separate from Pseudotropheus; the name of that genus is itself disputed, appearing as both Maylandia (Meyer & Foerster, 1984) and Metriaclima (Stauffer et al., 1997), and the same fish is written under either. Its generic placement within that complex has been debated more than for most: some aspects of the dark male coloration suggest an affinity with Melanochromis, but its dentition (the absence of the widely spaced unicuspid teeth of Melanochromis) and, above all, its feeding technique — pressing the lips flat against the rock and combing the algae — are unmistakably those of Maylandia, which is where Konings places it.
In 2026 Ad Konings formally described this fish as Metriaclima staufferi in the European Journal of Zoology (4(2): 1–6), from a holotype collected at Manda, Tanzania — an adult male, SAIAB 246370, 2.48 in SL, with 25 paratypes (SAIAB 246367) from the same site — placing it in the informal 'flavifemina group' alongside M. flavifemina, M. phaeos, M. lundoense, M. nigrodorsalis and M. koningsi, and distinguishing it from those relatives chiefly by its male dorsal-fin pattern and, in some populations, an entirely black flank. Two naming caveats attach to the new name. First, the genus: Konings and the Cichlid Room Companion school use Metriaclima, while Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes — and this atlas, with most of the US hobby — treat that name as a junior synonym of Maylandia, so the species appears here in Maylandia. Second, availability: the description was published electronically without the ZooBank registration the ICZN Code requires, and the Catalog of Fishes therefore rules the name staufferi not yet formally available. This atlas presents the fish under Konings's name as an editorial decision — the description is real, thorough and by the leading authority on these cichlids — while stating that caveat plainly; the fish spent decades in the hobby as the msobo, and that trade name remains the surest way to recognize it.
Morphology
This is a typical medium-sized mbuna with the deep, laterally compressed body and blunt, gently sloping forehead of the zebra group. malawi.si gives wild males up to about 4.7 in total length and females to about 3.9 in; aquarium males, well-fed and unchecked, commonly reach roughly 5.1–5.9 in (about 5 to 6 inches), with hobbyists consistently reporting full-grown males around 5 to 5.5 inches. The defining feature is colour, and it is strongly sex-linked. Mature males are blue to blue-black, overlaid with variable lighter-blue striping and speckling on the upper half of the body and along the base of the dorsal fin. Females — and all juveniles — are a bright, uniform orange-yellow across every known population, with no vertical barring. There is no orange-blotched (OB) or piebald morph reported for this species: the colour system here is a clean blue-male / yellow-female dichromatism rather than the multi-morph polymorphism seen in some zebra-complex relatives such as the red zebra. The most striking thing about that dichromatism is developmental. Every fish hatches and grows up yellow; only as males approach maturity do they switch, often over a few weeks, from yellow through a muddy transitional phase to full blue-black. This means a young group looks entirely female until the males 'turn', and it is the reason beginners panic that they have all-female stock or a mislabelled fish. The closely similar Membe Deep form is smaller and the males show a more solid, less speckled light-blue pattern, a useful distinction for keepers.
Konings's 2026 description sharpens some of these details. Territorial males show a black throat, breast and ventral flank running from the head back to, and often including, the caudal peduncle, set against a light-blue upper two-thirds of the body carrying irregular dark-blue to black bars and stripes; the dorsal fin carries a dark blue-black submarginal band over a light-blue longitudinal band, sometimes reduced to a row of light-blue spots. In some populations males lose the bars altogether and turn almost entirely dark blue-black on the flank and caudal peduncle, with light-blue spots and stripes retained along the upper flank, while young or non-territorial males can show only a faint, vaguely visible pattern of vertical bars. Females carry small greenish-yellow opercular spots and a white leading edge on the pelvic fin, fine details invisible at a glance but consistent across the populations Konings examined.
Habitat
Maylandia staufferi is endemic to Lake Malawi and restricted to the lake's north-eastern, Tanzanian coast. Its distribution runs broadly between Cape Kaiser and Lundu, with documented populations at Ngwasi, Magunga (Magunga Reef/Rocks), Manda, Pombo Rocks and Lundu; Magunga is the primary collection point and the source of nearly all aquarium fish. It is a rock-dweller of the sediment-free rocky habitat that mbuna depend on, but it is notably a fish of the deeper rocks: Konings records it over rocky substrate at depths of roughly 23–82 ft, considerably deeper than many shallow-shore mbuna, which is the origin of the old 'Deep Magunga' / 'Deep Tanzania' trade names. Within that rocky zone males establish territories among the larger rock formations. In-situ chemistry for these specific reefs has not been published separately, but the fish sits within Lake Malawi's well-characterised and very stable surface envelope: warm, hard and strongly alkaline, with temperatures broadly in the mid-20s Celsius and a pH around 7.7 to 8.6. As a rock-bound endemic it is effectively confined to its home stretch of coast — the sandy shores between Njambe and Lundu form a barrier that separates it from its southern counterpart, sp. 'msobo heteropictus', and no intermediate forms have been found across that gap.
Konings's 2026 field survey of the type population adds a finer distributional and depth picture. The species ranges along the Tanzanian shore from Cape Kaiser south to Lundu, occupying 'intermediate' ground where rocky and sandy substrates intergrade rather than pure open rock, at depths of roughly 16–98 ft; non-breeding fish tend to hold the shallower end of that range while territorial males concentrate from about 33–98 ft, digging spawning burrows in crevices or beneath rocks rather than defending open rock face. Konings also records that the once-abundant Magunga population, still the species' primary hobby collection point, was 'almost completely eradicated' there by ornamental collectors during the 1990s — a reminder that this narrow-range endemic has already borne real collection pressure at its best-known site.
Feeding
Msobo is an aufwuchs grazer, like the bulk of the mbuna community. Aufwuchs is the dense felt of filamentous algae and diatoms, together with the tiny invertebrates living within it, that coats Malawi's rocks and underpins the whole rock-dwelling fauna. The fish works this mat by pressing its lips against the rock and combing loose algal strands away with its small teeth — the feeding action that, more than anything, fixes it in Maylandia. It is therefore primarily a herbivorous algivore, taking the small crustaceans and other invertebrates among the algae incidentally; Konings's notes add that females in particular also feed on plankton in open water. In the aquarium it readily accepts prepared foods, but a plant-based diet matters: like other long-gutted mbuna it is prone to the digestive disorder commonly called 'Malawi bloat' when overfed rich animal protein, so spirulina-based flakes or pellets should form the staple, with only occasional, lean live or frozen items (artemia, mysis) and a deliberate avoidance of fatty foods such as bloodworm in quantity and tubifex altogether.
Konings's 2026 description of the type population confirms this mixed strategy directly: across every population he observed, the species took both plankton and material combed from the algal matrix on rock, feeding in the characteristic Metriaclima manner with the body held nearly perpendicular to the substrate while the jaws work loose diatoms and algal filaments from the aufwuchs — the same distinctive feeding posture used to diagnose the genus.
Mating
Like the rest of the zebra complex, Msobo is a polygynous, lek-style breeder with no lasting pair bond. Males are territorial and intolerant of one another, defending a patch of rock centred on a crevice or cave that doubles as the spawning site; aggression is directed mainly at conspecific males and at similar-looking species, while unrelated tankmates are largely ignored. A male in condition intensifies his blue and courts passing females by erecting his fins fully and presenting a quivering flank. When a female responds, the pair circle, the male trailing his anal fin — with its egg-spots (ocelli) — across the substrate. This is a moderately, not exceptionally, aggressive mbuna: keepers describe it as robust but relatively calm, and the standard advice is to run a single male with three or four females (or a larger harem such as three males to seven females in a big tank) with ample broken rockwork so females can escape a male's constant attention. One commonly seen quirk, shared with relatives in the genus, is that a dominant female deprived of a male can take on male-like behaviour and even begin to colour up.
Breeding
Msobo is a maternal (ovophilous) mouthbrooder, and a straightforward, productive one. After courtship the female lays a small clutch on the male's territory and immediately takes the eggs into her mouth; nuzzling the egg-spots on his anal fin draws in milt that fertilises the eggs already in her buccal cavity. She then broods eggs and larvae in her mouth for roughly three weeks (about 21 days), fasting and sheltering among the rocks, before releasing free-swimming fry. Clutch sizes are modest, typically on the order of a couple of dozen, scaling up with the size of the female — one hobbyist reported stripping 22 fry from a single brood. There is no further parental care and no male involvement after spawning; released fry hide in crevices, and in a community tank most are eaten unless there is dense rockwork or the holding female is moved to a separate tank around day 15 to 18 to release in safety. A genetically characteristic detail follows from the colour system: every fry is yellow at release and stays that way through the juvenile stage, with the males only later switching to blue-black as they mature — so a batch of fry gives no early clue to its sex ratio.
In the aquarium
Maylandia staufferi is well-suited to an experienced mbuna keeper and manageable for an intermediate one who understands the genus. The minimum sensible tank is around 33 US gal for a single-male trio, though a 200-litre (55-gallon) or larger tank is strongly preferable and opens up the option of keeping a more natural 1-male, 4–6-female group or even a small multi-male colony (say 2–3 males to 7–10 females) if the footprint is generous enough and the rockwork complex enough to break sightlines. A long tank matters far more than a tall one — mbuna live horizontally across rock surfaces, not in the water column.
Water chemistry must match Lake Malawi's stable, hard, alkaline envelope. The target range drawn from the facts is pH 7.7–8.6 (aim for 8.0–8.5 in practice), temperature 75–82 °F (75–82 °F), and high general and carbonate hardness — a GH of 10–20 dGH and a KH above 10 dKH are typical Malawi goals. Crushed coral, aragonite sand, or a dedicated Malawi buffer will hold the pH reliably; soft or neutral tapwater needs active buffering and should not be left unbuffered with these fish. Regular partial water changes of roughly 20–25% weekly are standard Malawi practice and are not negotiable — the lake is ancient and oligotrophic, and these fish are adapted to exceptionally stable, high-quality water.
The tank should be built almost entirely of rocks — stacked limestone, Texas holey rock, or similar hard alkaline-compatible stone arranged into multiple caves, overhangs, and crevices — with a sand or fine-gravel substrate. Live plants are impractical because the fish will uproot and graze them; artificial plants anchored in the rockwork can provide visual cover if desired but are not required. A bare sandy area in the foreground mimics the sandy clearings around Magunga reef and allows females space to retreat from a pursuing male. Filtration should be robust for the tank size, as mbuna are messy, high-bioload fish.
Stocking deserves care. The ratio of one male to three or more females is a firm rule, not a guideline — extra males in a small tank produce relentless aggression that will kill the subordinate fish. Tankmates should ideally be other mbuna of broadly similar size and aggression but different colour patterns, avoiding any similarly blue-and-barred or similarly all-yellow species, which risk either hybridisation or misdirected territorial aggression. Do not mix the Magunga form with the Membe Deep form or with sp. 'msobo heteropictus' in the same tank; these are separate geographical populations and crossing them defeats the purpose of keeping an undescribed form. Haplochromine (hap) cichlids from the open lake are generally unsuitable companions because Msobo's aggression stresses them, though large, robust haps in a very large tank can work under the right conditions.
Breeding happens readily without any special intervention once the fish are settled, well-fed, and the sex ratio is right. A brooding female can be left in the main tank if there is dense rockwork (she will use the deepest cave), but to save fry she is better moved to a bare-bottom holding tank around day 15–18 and allowed to spit or be gently stripped. The most common keeper mistake with Msobo, as with mbuna generally, is feeding a diet heavy in animal protein — beef heart, tubifex, or excessive bloodworm. These fish have a long intestine adapted to processing plant material, and a high-protein diet reliably triggers the swelling, bloating, and rapid decline collectively known as Malawi bloat. A spirulina-based flake or pellet as the daily staple, supplemented occasionally with artemia nauplii or mysis, is the standard and correct approach. Overall, this is a fish that rewards straightforward Malawi-specialist husbandry and is entirely undemanding in the hands of a keeper who simply keeps the water quality high, the rock plentiful, and the protein low.
Conservation
Because it has never been formally described, Maylandia staufferi has not been assessed by the IUCN and carries no Red List category — it is, in the strict sense, Not Evaluated, a status it shares with the lake's many other known-but-undescribed forms. That absence of a formal status should not be read as either security or alarm; it simply reflects that conservation assessment follows description, and this fish awaits both. What can be said is set by its biology and its setting. It is a narrow-range endemic, confined to a short stretch of the Tanzanian north-east coast and to rocky reefs at moderate depth, and it is collected for the ornamental trade, of which Magunga is a known source — the kind of restricted-range, commercially harvested rock-dweller for which targeted collection is at least a plausible localized pressure, though there is no evidence it is currently overharvested. More broadly, it sits within a lake under real and worsening strain: Lake Malawi holds one of the planet's richest freshwater fish faunas, and a basin-scale review by Chavula and colleagues (2023) documents mounting sediment and nutrient loading, shoreline degradation, warming surface waters and reduced deep mixing, alongside heavy inshore fishing. For a rock-bound, sediment-sensitive endemic, soil erosion and sedimentation from a deforesting catchment — which smother the clean rock its aufwuchs grazing depends on — are precisely the pressures that matter most, even though the species itself is not, on current evidence, in any immediate danger.
