Taxonomy & naming
Mylochromis gracilis was described in 1935 by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas, as Haplochromis gracilis, in her synopsis of the cichlid fishes of Lake Nyasa (now Lake Malawi), from material taken at Monkey Bay. The parenthetical authority, (Trewavas, 1935), records its subsequent transfer out of Haplochromis. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid as Mylochromis gracilis (Trewavas 1935).
The genus Mylochromis was raised by C. Tate Regan in 1920 for long-snouted Malawi sand-cichlids, with Mylochromis lateristriga as its type species. Like its congeners, Mylochromis gracilis spent a period in the genus Maravichromis (Eccles & Trewavas, 1989) before Derijst and Snoeks (1992) demonstrated Maravichromis to be a junior synonym of the older Mylochromis. The species is one of roughly two dozen valid Mylochromis, all Lake Malawi endemics. A 2025 revision of the genus continues to recognise it.
The specific epithet gracilis is Latin for 'slender,' probably referring to the species' slim shape compared with most of its congeners. In the aquarium hobby it is widely known as the 'Haplochromis torpedo stripe' — a trade name that captures both its streamlined, torpedo-like form and the oblique stripe running along its flank — and is sometimes simply called the 'happy.'
Morphology
Mylochromis gracilis is a slender, elongate haplochromine reaching about 8.5 in total length (FishBase). Its build is noticeably more streamlined than that of most congeners — the basis for both its scientific name and its 'torpedo' trade name. It carries relatively longer jaws and more teeth than related species, equipment suited to seizing and holding active prey. The flank bears an oblique stripe that, distinctively, does not extend onto the caudal peduncle, and some individuals show a separate caudal spot.
The longer jaws and elongate body mark Mylochromis gracilis out as a hunter rather than a sand-sifter. Sexual dimorphism follows the Malawi haplochromine norm: breeding males develop bright nuptial coloration and defend territories, while females and non-breeding males remain cryptically patterned. Aquarium accounts of the 'torpedo stripe' describe males in colour as showing blue and metallic tones over the streamlined body, though detailed species-specific dimorphism data in the formal literature are limited.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Lake Malawi and is restricted to the southern part of the lake (FishBase). It is a demersal fish that has been observed over sand, where it hunts across the open substrate. FishBase records a water-chemistry envelope for it of pH 7.5–8.3 and hardness 5–30 °dH — well within the lake's stable, hard, alkaline regime.
Lake Malawi as a whole offers lake-wide pH around 7.7–8.6, surface temperatures of roughly 75–82 °F, very high carbonate hardness, and conductivity typically 210–260 µS/cm. Mylochromis gracilis is adapted to these constant conditions and, like all Malawi cichlids, has no tolerance for soft or acidic water. No specific published depth range exists for the species, though its association is with the open sandy zone of the southern lake.
Feeding
Mylochromis gracilis is an active predator. FishBase records that it preys on small fish — mainly cichlids — and on invertebrates collected from the sand. The combination of an elongate body, longer jaws, and a fuller set of teeth equips it to pursue and seize small mobile fish, distinguishing it from the substrate-sifting and mollusc-crushing habits of some of its congeners.
This predatory ecology places Mylochromis gracilis among the piscivorous and invertivorous hunters of the southern lake's sand community, taking small cichlids and bottom invertebrates over open substrate. No dedicated quantitative diet study has been published, so the account rests on FishBase's summary and the fish's predatory morphology; its trophic position is clearly that of a small to medium carnivore.
Mating
As a Lake Malawi haplochromine, Mylochromis gracilis is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder with no lasting pair bond. Breeding males establish and defend territories over the sandy substrate, courting females with lateral displays and intensified nuptial coloration; females visiting a territory remain cryptically marked.
Specific courtship descriptions for this species in the wild have not been published in detail, so the account is inferred from the consistent reproductive biology of the genus and from aquarium observation. The pattern is the familiar Malawi one — a brightly coloured, display-active male defending a patch of substrate, cryptic mobile females, and a brief spawning encounter over the male's site after which the female takes sole charge of the eggs.
Breeding
Breeding follows the standard Malawi haplochromine template, and the 'torpedo stripe' has been bred in aquaria. The female lays her eggs over the male's site, takes them immediately into her mouth, and collects milt — cued by the male's anal-fin egg-spots — to fertilise the clutch buccally. She then broods eggs and larvae for the usual three to four weeks, fasting throughout, before releasing free-swimming fry.
No precise wild clutch counts have been published for Mylochromis gracilis. Given its adult size of around 8.5 in TL and the genus-typical mouthbrooding biology, a brood on the order of several dozen eggs would be consistent with Malawi haplochromines of comparable size, though this is inferred from congeners rather than measured for this species. Hobbyist sources note that long-domesticated stock of the 'torpedo stripe' is easier to spawn than wild-caught fish, but stress that the lake's specific water parameters must still be respected for reliable breeding.
In the aquarium
Mylochromis gracilis is one of the more familiar Mylochromis in the hobby, circulating under the trade name 'Haplochromis torpedo stripe.' It is a genuine predator, and that shapes its care: small tankmates risk being eaten. The notes here combine the species' known predatory biology with general large-Hap husbandry, and hobbyist experience of the 'torpedo stripe' specifically.
A streamlined fish that reaches around 8.5 in needs a long tank with ample horizontal swimming space and a deep bed of fine sand reflecting its natural hunting ground; at least 59 in of length and roughly 105 US gal would be a sensible floor for one male with two or three females. Rockwork is secondary to open sand. Tankmates should be robust haplochromines of comparable size — nothing small enough to be regarded as prey — and visually similar males should not be housed together.
Water chemistry must match the Lake Malawi envelope: pH roughly 7.8–8.6 (FishBase records pH 7.5–8.3 for the species), hard water (up to ~30 °dH), temperature 75–81 °F, and good conductivity, achieved with lake-salt or carbonate buffering on soft tap water. Stability is essential — dips toward neutral or acidic pH are linked to Malawi bloat, the bacterial enteritis that is the commonest cause of death in captive Malawi cichlids. A carnivore diet of quality pellets supplemented with frozen or live invertebrates and occasional small meaty foods suits its hunting habit; mammalian fats should be avoided. With its open-water predatory behaviour and streamlined good looks, the 'torpedo stripe' is a rewarding fish for keepers with the tank length to do it justice.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Mylochromis gracilis as Least Concern (LC), assessed on 20 June 2018 by Ad Konings and Jacqueline Kazembe as part of the lake-wide Lake Malawi assessment. Although it is restricted to the southern part of the lake, it is not subject to any documented major threat sufficient for a threatened listing, and it carries no CITES listing.
That status should, however, be read against the broader trajectory of Lake Malawi. The lake is warming and stratifying more strongly, reducing the deep mixing that fertilises the productive surface layer and so the prey base for predators such as this. Intensive artisanal and semi-industrial fishing in the southern arms — exactly the part of the lake this species occupies — together with catchment deforestation and sedimentation, degrades its sandy inshore habitat. The 2018 lake-wide Red List assessment found that around nine percent of Lake Malawi's fishes are at high risk of extinction; Mylochromis gracilis is not among them, but as a southern-lake endemic in heavily fished waters its long-term security depends on the health of that part of the lake. It has been flagged for inclusion on conservation-priority lists maintained by hobbyist organisations, reflecting hobbyist concern for southern-lake endemics even where the formal IUCN status remains Least Concern.
