Taxonomy & the radiation
Mylochromis was erected by C. Tate Regan in 1920, in a footnote to his paper on Tanganyikan cichlids, with the type species Chromis lateristriga Günther, 1864 (Turner, 2024, J. Fish Biol. 106:1124). The name marries Greek mylo- ('mill,' for the grinding pharyngeal teeth) and chromis, the old catch-all root for cichlids. It sits in the family Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, within the maternal-mouthbrooding 'haplochromine' assemblage that produced the explosive species flocks of the East African Rift.
The genus's modern shape is the product of one big revision and a tangle of nomenclature. In the last major overhaul of the striped Malawian haplochromines, Eccles & Trewavas (1989) split 22 oblique-striped species across ten genera (Aristochromis, Corematodus, Tramitichromis and others) on the basis of distinctive head, mouth or pharyngeal specializations, then dumped the 16 leftover species — those with the stripe but none of the special traits — into a new genus they called Maravichromis, with type Haplochromis ericotaenia Regan, 1922. Derijst & Snoeks (1992, Cybium 16(2):173) showed that Maravichromis was a subjective junior synonym of Regan's earlier Mylochromis, so the older name prevails and the Maravichromis diagnosis was effectively 'rolled over' onto it. You will still see Maravichromis in older aquarium literature and on some import lists; treat it as a synonym. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Van der Laan, eds.) tracks these moves species by species. The genus is still actively growing: Turner (2024) described M. rotundus and M. durophagus from the northwestern rocky coast, raising the described total to about 24, and noted that Konings (2016) illustrates many more undescribed forms. It is, in short, a holding pen for the lake's 'generalist' striped haplochromines as much as a tight natural group.
Defining features
The defining feature of Mylochromis is, paradoxically, the lack of one. As Turner (2024) put it, the genus is diagnosed by a prominent oblique (diagonal) dark stripe running from the snout up across the flank toward the dorsal fin, combined with the absence of the apomorphic specializations used to define the other striped genera — there is no agreed synapomorphy. Members are medium-sized, laterally compressed haplochromines with a terminal mouth, fairly large eyes, and 'Placidochromis-type' lower-jaw dentition in which the outer tooth row runs in a relatively straight line toward the back of the jaw.
Size ranges across the genus from roughly 6 in (6 in) to about 10 in (10 in) total length, with most species in the 7–8 in (7–8 in) band; M. lateristriga, the 'basket hap,' reaches about 8 in (8 in) per FishBase, and wild males of some forms top 9 in (9 in) on malawi.si. Telling Mylochromis from its look-alikes is genuinely hard and often comes down to fine characters: from Lichnochromis acuticeps (a pointy-faced crevice feeder Oliver considers the sister to lateristriga) by snout shape; from Otopharynx, Placidochromis and Protomelas largely by the diagonal stripe and proportions. Even within the genus, M. balteatus and M. melanotaenia are separated mainly on lower-jaw tooth counts and the height of the diagonal band (Eccles & Trewavas, 1989), and some 'species' may not be distinct at all — a caution worth remembering when buying fish under these names.
Range & habitat
Mylochromis is wholly endemic to Lake Malawi and its lagoons; the genus occurs nowhere else on Earth. Within the lake, species are spread around much of the shoreline — Malawian, Tanzanian and Mozambican coasts alike — though several are reported as more common in the southern arms. M. lateristriga, for instance, is recorded lake-wide but is commonest in the south (CLOFFA; FishBase), while the newly described M. rotundus and M. durophagus are known so far only from shallow rocky sites on the far northwestern coast near Chilumba and Nkhata Bay (Turner, 2024).
The genus is best thought of as a sand-and-intermediate-zone radiation rather than a rocky-reef one, although it spills into both. Typical biotopes include open sandy flats, muddy bottoms near river mouths, and the intermediate habitat where sand meets rock and scattered vegetation (Vallisneria) grows in sheltered bays. M. melanotaenia, for example, is reported from muddy bottoms near river outlets at depths of about 50–130 ft (49–131 ft) on malawi.si, while the two 2024 species came off shallow rocky shores. In-situ water chemistry is the hard, alkaline rift-lake signature: surface pH around 7.9–9.1 and surface temperatures generally 72–82 °F (72–82 °F), within a permanently stratified, meromictic water column oxygenated only to roughly 560–720 ft (558–722 ft) (Chavula et al., 2023, J. Great Lakes Res. 49(6):102241).
Ecology & diet
The trophic core of Mylochromis is benthic invertebrate-feeding on soft floors — the lineage is built to find and crush prey that other cichlids cannot reach. Several species are classic 'sand-sifters' or epibenthic foragers that take crustaceans and insect larvae (museum gut records for M. lateristriga show a crustacean diet; Practical Fishkeeping, 2006), and the genus as a whole occupies the generalist-to-molluscivore end of the spectrum that the showier striped genera (the piscivorous Aristochromis, the scale-eating Corematodus) left behind.
Where species diverge most is in the pharyngeal mill that gives the genus its name. A subset have heavily molarized lower pharyngeal bones for crushing snails: M. anaphyrmus, M. mola, M. sphaerodon and the aptly named M. durophagus (Latin durus + -phagus, 'hard-eater') all carry hemispherical molariform teeth, and Turner (2024) argues these snail-crushers can usually be told apart in life by head profile alone, without dissection. Others, like M. rotundus, retain a small, lightly built pharyngeal bone with slender teeth and presumably stay on softer prey. The thick-lipped M. melanotaenia and M. balteatus are thought to suck snails out of their shells rather than crush them (Konings, 2016, cited on Cichlid Room Companion and malawi.si). This same crushing-versus-extracting axis is a famous engine of cichlid divergence elsewhere (e.g., the polymorphic Herichthys minckleyi; Bell et al., 2019), and within Lake Malawi these dentition differences track real species boundaries (Eccles & Trewavas, 1989).
Behaviour & breeding
Like the rest of the Malawi haplochromine flock, every Mylochromis is a maternal mouthbrooder: there are no substrate or cave spawners in the genus. Females incubate the eggs and fry in the buccal cavity for roughly three weeks and continue to shelter free-swimming young in the mouth when threatened; the male's contribution ends at fertilization. Breeding males color up — in M. melanotaenia they turn mainly steel-blue with a yellowish tail — and several species are described as non-territorial or only weakly so, courting over open sand rather than defending a fixed rock (malawi.si).
Socially, these are polygynous, female-skewed cichlids best kept the way they live: a dominant male displaying to and spawning with multiple females. Aggression is moderate by Malawi standards — less relentless than the rock-dwelling mbuna, but adult males of larger species (M. lateristriga, M. sphaerodon) hold court over considerable space and will harry rivals and subdominant males. Hobbyist reports of M. sphaerodon describe a male coloring up 'overnight' and females found holding within days of a settled group establishing (cichlid-forum.com), consistent with the standard haplochromine pattern in which a stable, well-fed harem and warm, hard water are the main breeding triggers.
In the aquarium
Mylochromis are 'haps,' not mbuna, and should be kept like the open-water, harem-forming cichlids they are. Plan around their adult size: a 7–8 in (7–8 in) species like M. lateristriga or M. sphaerodon needs a 4-ft tank (a 75-gallon) as a realistic floor for a single male or trio, and a 6-ft tank if you want a proper group or to combine them with other large haps (cichlid-forum.com; Practical Fishkeeping). A soft sand substrate suits their sifting habit and lets snail-crushers like M. sphaerodon behave naturally; open swimming room matters more than rockwork. Water should be hard and alkaline (pH roughly 7.8–8.6) at 76–82 °F (75–82 °F).
The honest assessment: these are intermediate-level fish, not beginner cichlids. They are not especially delicate, but they demand space, a sensible sex ratio (one male to several females, or carefully managed all-male), and restraint. The recurring mistakes are predictable — overstocking a too-small tank and triggering chronic male aggression, and mixing congeners or look-alike striped haps that hybridize readily, which both ruins the fish genetically and propagates mislabeled stock through the hobby (a real problem given how many Mylochromis are separated only on fine characters). Diet is easy: museum data and keepers agree they take quality flake, pellet and frozen foods, though as with many Malawi cichlids an over-rich, protein-heavy diet invites the bloat that plagues the lake's fish in captivity. They are also not common in the trade — most appear as wild imports or as undescribed 'sp.' forms (e.g., 'lateristriga makanjila,' formerly sp. 'Mchuse'), so expect to track them down rather than find them on a shelf.
Conservation
At the species level, Mylochromis is mostly stable on paper: the IUCN Red List has assessed the genus's better-known members (e.g., M. obtusus, assessed Least Concern in 2018) as Least Concern, reflecting wide distribution within the lake and the absence of any single targeted threat. There is little directed collection pressure — these are not heavily traded aquarium fish, and they are not a primary food fishery — so the genus is not, in itself, in trouble. The honest framing is the one the Red List itself implies: most species are Least Concern, but the lake they depend on is under real and growing strain.
That lake-level pressure is the story that matters for an endemic genus with nowhere else to go. Lake Malawi's fisheries have been over-exploited since commercial trawling expanded, with the iconic chambo (the endemic Oreochromis species flock) collapsing from its former dominance (Chavula et al., 2023, J. Great Lakes Res. 49(6):102241). Deforestation and intensifying agriculture across the catchment drive heavy sediment and nutrient loading from tributary rivers — among the highest atmospheric and riverine nutrient delivery rates documented anywhere — which degrades the clear, sandy and intermediate habitats Mylochromis forages over. Climate change compounds it: Chavula et al. report roughly +33 °F of warming in the shallow waters over ~60 years (versus ~32 °F at depth), which strengthens the permanent stratification of this meromictic lake, slows the wind- and seiche-driven upwelling that fertilizes the productive surface layer, and thereby threatens to cut primary productivity at the base of the food web. Invasive species (including alien aquatic plants like Salvinia molesta that bloom on added nutrients) round out the recognized threats. None of this is a death sentence for Mylochromis today — but for a genus found in exactly one lake, the trajectory of that lake is the conservation question.
