Taxonomy & naming
Mylochromis guentheri was described in 1922 by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan, as Haplochromis guentheri, in his account of the cichlid fishes of Lake Nyasa (now Lake Malawi). The parenthetical authority, (Regan, 1922), records its subsequent transfer out of Haplochromis. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid as Mylochromis guentheri (Regan 1922).
The genus Mylochromis was erected by Regan in 1920 for long-snouted Malawi sand-cichlids, with Mylochromis lateristriga as its type species. Like its congeners, Mylochromis guentheri passed for some years through the genus Maravichromis (Eccles & Trewavas, 1989) before Derijst and Snoeks (1992) showed Maravichromis to be a junior synonym of the older Mylochromis. The species is one of roughly two dozen valid Mylochromis, all Lake Malawi endemics.
The specific epithet guentheri honours the German-born British ichthyologist-herpetologist Albert Günther (1830–1914), who in 1864 had reported this very species under the name Chromis lateristriga in his Catalogue of the Fishes in the British Museum — that is, before it was recognised as distinct from the true lateristriga and given its own name by Regan. The species has no established common name in the aquarium hobby.
Morphology
Mylochromis guentheri is a medium-large haplochromine reaching about 8 in total length (FishBase). It has the elongate body and pointed snout characteristic of the sand-dwelling Mylochromis, suited to working the substrate. Because the species was long confused with Mylochromis lateristriga — indeed Günther reported it under that name — the two are superficially similar in their long-snouted build and oblique flank marking, and careful comparison of head proportions and banding is needed to separate them.
The pharyngeal and oral dentition of the genus reflects a diet of substrate material and small invertebrates. Sexual dimorphism follows the Malawi haplochromine norm: breeding males are territorial and develop bright nuptial coloration, while females and non-breeding males remain cryptically patterned. Detailed species-specific dimorphism notes are limited in the published literature, but the general pattern is well established for the group.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Lake Malawi and is widespread throughout the lake (FishBase). It is a demersal fish of sandy bottoms, foraging over the sediment floor of inshore waters. No published minimum or maximum depth has been recorded for it specifically; its association is consistently with sand rather than rock or dense vegetation.
Lake Malawi offers a stable, hard, alkaline environment: lake-wide pH around 7.7–8.6, surface temperatures of roughly 75–82 °F, very high carbonate hardness, and conductivity typically 210–260 µS/cm. Like all Malawi cichlids, Mylochromis guentheri is adapted to these constant conditions and shows no tolerance for soft or acidic water. Its wide distribution across the lake's sandy zones reflects a generalist sand-floor habit rather than restriction to any one region.
Feeding
Mylochromis guentheri is a benthic sediment-feeder. FishBase records that it feeds from the sediment layer on the substrate — gleaning organic material and small invertebrates from the thin film of detritus and sand on the lake floor. This places it among the many Malawi haplochromines that exploit the productive but physically demanding sand-floor niche, processing substrate to extract food rather than hunting mobile prey in open water.
The long snout of the genus is used to probe and work the sediment, and the mouth and pharyngeal jaws to sort food from sand. No dedicated quantitative diet study has been published for this species, so the account rests on FishBase's summary and the feeding ecology of the sand-dwelling Mylochromis as a group; its trophic role is that of a benthic detritivore-invertivore rather than a piscivore.
Mating
As a Lake Malawi haplochromine, Mylochromis guentheri is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder with no lasting pair bond. Breeding males establish and defend territories over the sandy substrate, where they court passing females with lateral displays and intensified nuptial coloration. In the sand-dwelling Mylochromis the male typically prepares a spawning site — a shallow depression or cleared patch of substrate — to which he attracts females.
Specific courtship observations for Mylochromis guentheri have not been published, so the account is inferred from the consistent reproductive biology of the genus and of Malawi sand-cichlids generally. The pattern is the familiar Malawi one: a brightly coloured, display-active male defending a patch of sand; cryptic, mobile females; and a brief spawning encounter over the male's site after which the female assumes sole care of the brood.
Breeding
Breeding follows the standard Malawi haplochromine template. The female lays her eggs over the male's site, takes them immediately into her mouth, and collects milt — cued by the male's anal-fin egg-spots — to fertilise the clutch buccally. She then broods eggs and larvae for the usual three to four weeks, fasting throughout, before releasing free-swimming fry.
No clutch counts or fry-development data have been published specifically for Mylochromis guentheri. Given its maximum size of about 8 in TL and the genus-typical mouthbrooding biology, a brood on the order of a few dozen eggs would be consistent with Malawi haplochromines of comparable size, though this is inferred from congeners rather than measured for this species and should be treated as an estimate. The species is not part of the established aquarium-breeding literature, so its documented reproductive record is essentially what can be generalised from the flock.
In the aquarium
Mylochromis guentheri is seldom encountered in the aquarium trade and has little dedicated keeping literature of its own. The husbandry notes below are extrapolated from the requirements of comparable medium-large sand-dwelling Malawi haplochromines and should be read as such.
A fish that reaches around 8 in and forages over sand needs a long tank with substantial horizontal swimming space and a deep bed of fine sand to allow natural snout-probing; coarse gravel is unsuitable. A tank length of at least 59 in and a volume in the region of 90–105 US gal would be a sensible floor for one male with two or three females. Rockwork is secondary for a sand-dweller and is best kept to modest structure around the margins, leaving open substrate dominant.
Water chemistry must match the Lake Malawi envelope: pH roughly 7.8–8.6, hard water (10–20 °dH or higher), temperature 75–81 °F, and good conductivity, achieved with lake-salt or carbonate buffering on soft tap water. Stability is critical — dips toward neutral or acidic pH are implicated in Malawi bloat, the bacterial enteritis that is the commonest cause of death in captive Malawi cichlids. A varied diet built around quality cichlid pellets and supplemented with frozen or live invertebrates suits its sediment-feeding biology, with mammalian fats avoided; regular partial water changes round out routine care. Realistically this is a fish for the dedicated Malawi specialist rather than a commonly available aquarium subject.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Mylochromis guentheri as Least Concern (LC), assessed on 20 June 2018 by Ad Konings and Jacqueline Kazembe as part of the lake-wide Lake Malawi assessment. As a fish that is widespread throughout the lake with no documented major threat, it does not meet the criteria for a threatened category, and it carries no CITES listing.
That status should be read against the broader trajectory of Lake Malawi. The lake is warming and stratifying more strongly, which suppresses the deep mixing that fertilises the productive surface layer and so reduces the invertebrate productivity on which sand-foraging haplochromines depend. Heavy artisanal and semi-industrial fishing in the inshore zones, catchment deforestation, and the sedimentation it drives are altering the sandy inshore biotopes this species occupies. The 2018 lake-wide Red List assessment found that around nine percent of Lake Malawi's fishes are at high risk of extinction; Mylochromis guentheri is not among them, but its long-term security rests on the health of the lake system as a whole rather than on any species-specific protection beyond the partial coverage of Lake Malawi National Park.
