Mylochromis anaphyrmus is a sand-dwelling haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, built around one of the most specialised diets in the lake's species flock: it excavates snails from silty sand with a set of flattened, molariform pharyngeal teeth that function like a pair of nutcrackers. Reaching around 9 in in males, it is a stocky, subdued fish of the deeper sandy intermediate zone — barely traded, rarely seen in aquaria, but a key invertivore in the lake's benthic food web. The genus name it now carries, Mylochromis, was itself once disputed; the fish spent decades filed under the synonym Maravichromis before that name was formally sunk.

Taxonomy & naming

Warren Burgess and Herbert R. Axelrod described this species in 1973 in Tropical Fish Hobbyist (vol. 22, no. 2, pp. 87–98), under the original combination Haplochromis anaphyrmus. The holotype, USNM 210699, was taken from the southeastern arm of Lake Malawi approximately three miles south-east of Monkey Bay at a depth of nine fathoms (about 54 ft). The Cichlid Room Companion associates that locality with Mazinzi Reef — a rocky projection in the southeast arm between Monkey Bay and Nkhudzi — which is consistent with the original depth and bearing.

For roughly two decades the species was held in Maravichromis, the genus erected by Eccles and Trewavas in their 1989 monograph Malawian Cichlid Fishes for a cluster of oblique-striped, sand-associated haps. Derijst and Snoeks (1992), in a short but consequential paper in Cybium (16:173), showed that Maravichromis is a junior synonym of Mylochromis Regan, 1920, and the Yearbook literature of the early 1990s consistently adopted the correction. Konings's successive editions of Malawi Cichlids in their Natural Habitat follow suit. Mylochromis anaphyrmus is therefore the accepted name in the Catalog of Fishes, FishBase, GBIF, and the IUCN Red List; any appearance of Maravichromis anaphyrmus in older aquarium-trade literature is a synonym.

The species belongs to a subset of Mylochromis distinguished by molariform lower pharyngeal teeth — a rare specialisation within the genus shared with M. mola and Mylochromis sphaerodon. Turner (2025, J. Fish Biology) used anaphyrmus as the comparative benchmark when diagnosing the recently described Mylochromis durophagus, which also has molariform teeth but differs in head-profile angle and gape geometry. No common name has been established in the English-language hobby; it circulates in the trade as 'Maravichromis Anaphyrmus' (IUCN notes) or simply by its scientific name.

Morphology

In size there is a marked sexual asymmetry. The IUCN assessment, drawing on field data compiled by Ad Konings and Jacqueline Kazembe, gives males a maximum of 9 in TL and females up to 6 in — a relatively large size dimorphism by haplochromine standards. FishBase lists a maximum of 8 in for males or unsexed specimens, a figure that probably represents the aquarium-collection data pool rather than the in-situ maximum.

The body is moderately elongate and stocky for a sand-sifter. The diagnostic feature is not visible without dissection: the lower pharyngeal bone carries heavy, molariform (mill-stone shaped) teeth arranged in a broad pad — a grinder built for crushing hard-shelled prey. This is the same architecture named in the genus (Mylochromis = 'millstone chromis'), but most of the genus carries only moderately thickened pharyngeal teeth; in anaphyrmus and its small cohort of snail-specialists the molarization is pronounced. Turner (2025) notes a steep head profile in anaphyrmus compared to the more gradual slope of Mylochromis durophagus.

Coloration follows the genus pattern. Adults carry an oblique dark band running diagonally from the nape across the upper flank toward the caudal peduncle — the stripe that gives the whole Mylochromis assemblage its family likeness. Breeding males develop a blue-silver body cast; females and non-breeding males are more cryptic, brownish-silver with the diagonal band more clearly expressed. The oblique pattern is shared by most Mylochromis, so anaphyrmus is most reliably separated from its congeners in the field by habitat (silty sand at moderate depth rather than rocky shoreline) and its heavier, more rounded build.

Habitat

Mylochromis anaphyrmus is endemic to Lake Malawi (also known as Niassa or Nyasa), the great East African rift valley lake shared by Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. Within the lake it is primarily a southern and western species. The IUCN range description identifies the southeastern arm — from near Monkey Bay south and west — as the core, with additional trawl records from Chilola Bay in the central part of the lake indicating that the full extent of the range may be somewhat broader than the densest collection data suggest. Country records are Malawi and Mozambique.

This is a species of the sandy intermediate zone: the open sandy and silty bottoms that extend from the shallow shelf down into the dimly lit middle depths, away from the rocky mbuna reefs. The IUCN habitat assessment describes it as common below 33 ft, with trawl material obtained down to 197 ft at Chilinda in the southeastern arm (Turner 2025) and the FishBase depth note citing the range as extending to roughly 236 ft. The original holotype was caught at approximately 54 ft. The preferred microhabitat, as stated by Konings and Kazembe in the IUCN assessment, is that portion of the sandy coast where a thin layer of silt overlies the substrate and supports a dense community of freshwater gastropods — the food source the fish is built to exploit.

The water chemistry is the standard Lake Malawi envelope: warm, highly alkaline, and hard. Open-lake surface measurements place pH between about 7.7 and 8.6, temperatures between roughly 24 and 82 °F through most of the year, and conductivity around 200–280 µS/cm with high carbonate hardness. FishBase's aquarium-focused figures (pH 7.4–8.4, 73–81 °F, dH 7–30) sit within the lake-wide range; the dH maximum is only loosely constrained for this species from field data and may be regarded as habitat-typical rather than precisely measured.

Feeding

Mylochromis anaphyrmus is a molluscivore — specifically a freshwater gastropod predator that has evolved a mechanical solution to the hard-shell problem. The fish forages in the silty veneer overlying sandy bottoms, picking up snails and crushing them between the molariform plates of its pharyngeal mill. Gut-content studies have confirmed snails as the dominant prey; the IUCN Habitat and Ecology section records the species as 'a molluscivore, feeding on snails from the silty bottom.' FishBase assigns a trophic level of about 3.6 ± 0.6, consistent with a specialised invertivore rather than a generalist omnivore.

The association between this fish and silty sand is not incidental: the silt layer is where the snails concentrate, and the species has been described as common precisely in those zones of the sandy coast where silt is thick enough to support a rich gastropod fauna. Copepods and other small arthropods have also been recovered from gut samples, suggesting the diet is predominantly but not exclusively molluscs.

This specialisation is unusual within the lake. Most haplochromines are either fish-eaters, insect/larval invertivore sifters, algae scrapers, or planktivores; mollusc-crushing is convergently developed in only a handful of lineages. Within Mylochromis, the molluscivore guild that includes anaphyrmus, M. mola, and Mylochromis sphaerodon stands in contrast to the much larger group of oblique-striped relatives that are probably generalist invertivore sand-sifters. Understanding these dietary lines matters for keeping: Mylochromis anaphyrmus is not just 'a sand sifter' in the generalist sense but a confirmed snail specialist.

Mating

Mylochromis anaphyrmus follows the standard haplochromine mating system of Lake Malawi: polygynous maternal mouthbrooding, with no enduring pair bond. Dominant territorial males court multiple females in succession, with each female assessing several potential mates before accepting one. The IUCN assessment notes that territorial males build their nests on sandy substrate, excavating shallow depressions into which they draw females for spawning. Non-territorial males and females occur in small aggregations or mix with other sand-dwelling cichlids in the intermediate zone.

Courtship follows the egg-spot mechanism typical of haplochromines: the male displays his anal fin, whose spots mimic eggs, drawing the female to investigate and inhale his milt at the same moment she picks up the real eggs. Breeding males show the blue-silver nuptial dress and defend nest territories against rivals; outside of breeding condition, the sexes are superficially similar in coloration, though males are markedly larger.

Breeding

Reproduction is maternal mouthbrooding in the haplochromine pattern. After spawning over the male's sand nest, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her buccal cavity and broods them through larval development — fasting throughout — before releasing free-swimming fry. The generation length is estimated at two to three years (IUCN). Exact clutch sizes have not been published for this species in the primary literature; given the female's relatively modest size (maximum ~6 in), broods are probably in the range of 20–50 eggs, broadly consistent with congeners of similar body size, but this figure is an inference from genus-typical fecundity, not a measured datum for anaphyrmus specifically. There is no male parental care and no post-release care by the female once fry are free-swimming.

In the aquarium

Mylochromis anaphyrmus is genuinely uncommon in the hobby. It surfaces occasionally in specialist cichlid importers in Europe and North America, usually listed under the old trade name 'Maravichromis anaphyrmus,' but it is not a fish most aquarists will encounter at a typical fish store. Anyone keeping it should go in aware that this is a species to seek out deliberately, not a convenient purchase.

Tank sizing should reflect the male's potential to reach 9 in and the fish's preference for open, navigable water: a footprint of at least 150 × 19.5 in (roughly 65–80 US gal minimum) is a sensible baseline, with longer being better. The defining décor requirement is deep fine sand — at least 3–4 in — across most of the floor. Mylochromis anaphyrmus is a sifting molluscivore; it will spend a large portion of its time pushing its snout into the substrate searching for invertebrates, and a thin gravel bed or bare-bottomed tank denies it that essential behaviour and causes visible frustration. A few scattered rock piles or larger stones toward the rear and sides are fine and provide visual breaks, but the bulk of the floor should be open sand with unobstructed swimming lanes. Strong filtration and weekly partial water changes are necessary to keep a fine-sand tank with a large cichlid from silting into poor water quality.

Water parameters must match the Lake Malawi envelope: pH 7.8–8.6, temperature 75–82 °F, and moderately hard to hard water (general hardness roughly 10–20 dGH, carbonate hardness to match). Softer or acidic water should be avoided; prolonged exposure to conditions outside this range can suppress immunity and trigger the mycobacterial granuloma complex hobbyists know as Malawi bloat — a particular risk in haplochromines kept in suboptimal chemistry or fed high-protein meaty diets too frequently. A quality Malawi-formulated pellet as the dietary staple, supplemented occasionally with live or frozen invertebrates such as snails, shrimp, or daphnia, suits this species well. Avoid regular feeding of bloodworm or beef-heart-style diets, which are implicated in bloat in alkaline-water cichlids.

As a peaceful-to-moderate haplochromine, Mylochromis anaphyrmus is a reasonable community resident in a large Malawi hap-and-peacock tank, but tankmate selection requires thought. It should not be housed with aggressive mbuna such as large Melanochromis or Labeotropheus, which will harass a somewhat retiring sand-dweller. Similarly boisterous large cichlids, or fish that compete heavily for the same open-sand foraging territory, are poor choices. Compatible housemates are typically other non-aggressive haplochromines and Aulonocara peacocks of comparable size. One male per tank is sufficient; keeping multiple males without a very large, broken-up layout risks persistent territory disputes.

Breeding in captivity is feasible but rarely documented in detail for this species. It is a maternal mouthbrooder in the standard haplochromine pattern: the female incubates the fertilised eggs buccally for three to four weeks then releases free-swimming fry. A brooding female is best moved to a species-only tank or a quiet corner with minimal disturbance; a stressed female will swallow or prematurely release the brood. Fry are large enough at release to accept crushed flake and baby brine shrimp immediately. Because this fish is seldom kept and less often bred in captivity, first-hand hobbyist accounts are sparse; the care generalizations above are founded on Lake Malawi habitat data and the well-established care norms for haplochromines of similar ecology and size, and keepers should treat them as a starting framework rather than a proven captive recipe.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Mylochromis anaphyrmus as Least Concern (assessed 20 June 2018; e.T61008A155047972; assessors Ad Konings and Jacqueline Kazembe, reviewed by Jos Snoeks). The justification is straightforward: the species is common throughout the southern and western parts of the lake, is regularly caught in demersal trawl surveys, and faces no major widespread threats. It occurs within the Lake Malawi National Park. The ornamental fish trade collects it only rarely; subsistence fishing is the primary documented use.

That Least Concern verdict sits within a lake under measurable and growing stress, and the two should be read together rather than as independent facts. The comprehensive basin review by Chavula and colleagues (2023, Journal of Great Lakes Research) documents a Lake Malawi/Niassa/Nyasa system subject to rising surface temperatures (roughly 33 °F of warming over recent decades), a strengthening of thermal stratification that reduces the deep-water mixing which supplies nutrients to the productive surface layers, heavy sediment and nutrient loading from deforested catchments entering particularly at river mouths, and over-fishing pressure that has already driven the collapse of the commercially important chambo (Oreochromis) fishery. For a sand-and-silt benthic specialist like anaphyrmus, the most directly relevant threats are sediment loading — which can smother the silty microhabitat and the gastropod communities the fish depends on — and any basin-wide decline in lake productivity that reduces invertebrate standing crop. The species itself is not currently threatened, but it is a specialist tied to a specific microhabitat whose quality depends on catchment management and the lake's long-term limnological health.
