Otopharynx sp. "Auromarginatus Goldhead" is not a formally described species. It has no scientific name of its own, no describing author, no year of publication, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, because no taxonomist has published a description establishing it as distinct. It is an informal taxon recognised in the aquarium and field literature, principally through Ad Konings's documentation of the southeast arm cichlid fauna. Its trade name directly echoes the formally described species Otopharynx auromarginatus, and this Mozambican population is understood as part of, or very closely allied to, that species complex — distinguished in the hobby by additional golden colouration on the head of breeding males, hence "Goldhead." The relationship has not been confirmed by formal taxonomic study, and this population should not be treated as a synonym of O. auromarginatus, only as a form associated with it. Until a revision addresses the question directly, no authority or date should be attached to this population's name.
Morphology
Otopharynx species are generally moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed haplochromines with a terminal to slightly oblique mouth, built for a mixed foraging life over sand and among scattered rock rather than either pure rock-grazing or open-water plankton feeding. Genus-typical adult size runs roughly 4.5–7 in depending on the species; a size at the smaller-to-middle end of that range is expected for this form, though no formal measurement exists for the Goldhead population. Consistent with its trade name, breeding males are understood to show a golden margin on the fins — as in the described O. auromarginatus — together with additional gold colouration on the head that gives this population its distinguishing name; the body ground colour has not been separately documented in accessible references. Females and non-breeding males are expected to be plainer and silvery, the standard haplochromine pattern for concealment during brooding.
Habitat
This form is recorded from Minos Reef and Nkolongwe, both on the Mozambican shore of Lake Malawi's southeast arm — a region of scattered rocky reefs rising from extensive open sand, holding a distinctive cichlid fauna somewhat separate from the more heavily studied Malawian shore. Otopharynx species typically use this kind of intermediate rock-sand habitat, foraging over sand near reef structure. The water column here shares the lake-wide profile: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, broadly mid-20s Celsius with pH on the alkaline side of neutral. As an undescribed, locality-based form its depth range and full distribution beyond the Minos Reef–Nkolongwe stretch of coast are not established.
Feeding
No dedicated feeding study exists for this population. Otopharynx as a genus includes species that forage over sand for small invertebrates, pick items from rock surfaces, and in some cases take zooplankton in open water, making it one of the more ecologically varied non-mbuna genera. Absent data specific to the Goldhead form, the most defensible characterisation is a benthic/intermediate-habitat invertivore, foraging over sand and among scattered rock near reef structure, in the general manner documented for Otopharynx auromarginatus and its relatives.
Mating
Like other Lake Malawi haplochromines, this form is presumed polygynous, with males establishing small territories at or near reef structure and displaying their gold-marked breeding colour to attract passing females. There is no pair bond. Females visit territory-holding males, select largely on colour and site quality, and spawn briefly before departing with the fertilised clutch in the mouth. No behavioural study specific to this undescribed population exists; the account follows the general pattern documented for Otopharynx and for Lake Malawi haplochromines more broadly.
Breeding
Otopharynx sp. "Auromarginatus Goldhead" is a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all Lake Malawi haplochromine cichlids. After spawning, the female carries the fertilised eggs in her mouth for roughly three to four weeks, feeding little during this period, before releasing free-swimming fry with no further parental involvement from either parent. Clutch size has not been documented for this form specifically; by analogy with similarly sized Otopharynx species, a modest clutch of a few dozen eggs is a reasonable expectation rather than a measured fact.
In the aquarium
Otopharynx sp. "Auromarginatus Goldhead" is an uncommon aquarium fish, traded mainly through specialist importers working the southeast arm's Mozambican fauna. Where it is kept, husbandry follows the general template for an intermediate-habitat, moderately sized Otopharynx.
A tank of at least 47–59 in suits an adult group, with fine sand substrate and scattered rockwork that leaves generous open sand for foraging, reflecting the natural rock-sand transition habitat. Water chemistry should mirror Lake Malawi's profile: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH roughly 7.7–8.6, and moderately hard to hard water, with prolonged soft or acidic conditions avoided. A single male with several females is the standard social arrangement for a polygynous haplochromine of this kind, reducing the risk of a lone male harassing an unreceptive partner. Diet should be varied — quality pellet or flake as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live invertebrates such as chironomid larvae, brine shrimp, and daphnia — reflecting the genus's general invertivore biology, with fatty foods limited given Malawi cichlids' susceptibility to bloat.
Conservation
Otopharynx sp. "Auromarginatus Goldhead" has not been evaluated by the IUCN, and as an undescribed form without a formal scientific name it has no Red List assessment of any kind. That silence reflects taxonomy, not population safety. As a locality-restricted population on Mozambique's stretch of the southeast arm, it faces the general pressures affecting the lake's less-studied shores: ornamental collection, and the broader basin-wide stresses of sedimentation and fishing pressure, without the closer monitoring given to the more heavily surveyed Malawian coast. No conservation status should be fabricated for it. The honest statement is that it is unassessed and that its true range and status remain to be established by formal study.
