Otopharynx sp. "Heterodon Nankumba" has not been formally described. It has no holotype, no describing author, no publication year and no entry of its own in Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes; the name used here is an informal field/trade label and should never be cited as a valid binomial. Otopharynx was erected by Regan in 1920 and has absorbed several genera at various points in its taxonomic history, including forms once placed in Ctenopharynx, reflecting how unsettled the sand-and-rock-intermediate haplochromines of Lake Malawi remain at genus level. The epithet "heterodon" — from the Greek for "different teeth" — is the kind of descriptive term field workers use when a population is distinguished chiefly by its dentition rather than by an obvious colour difference, though no published diagnosis exists to confirm exactly what sets this form’s teeth apart from its relatives. "Nankumba" marks the locality: the Nankumba Peninsula, home to Cape Maclear, Otter Point and the islands of Lake Malawi National Park.
Morphology
Otopharynx species generally show the moderately deep, laterally compressed body typical of the sand-and-rock-intermediate haplochromines, with males in breeding colour often ranking among the most vividly patterned cichlids in the lake — blues, yellows and oranges depending on the species — while females remain silvery and cryptic. No measurements or meristic counts have been formally published for this undescribed form, so a precise maximum size cannot be stated with confidence; genus-typical figures for medium-sized Otopharynx run roughly 4.5–6.5 in. The name "heterodon" implies a dental character used by collectors to separate this population from superficially similar Otopharynx and Ctenopharynx-group fish in the same waters, but without a published description the precise nature of that difference cannot be stated as fact.
Habitat
This form is documented from the Nankumba Peninsula in the southern lake — Cape Maclear, Mitande Reef, Otter Point and Thumbi West Island — the core sites of Lake Malawi National Park and among the most thoroughly surveyed cichlid habitats in the entire lake. The peninsula offers the classic intermediate biotope favoured by many Otopharynx: rocky headlands and islands giving way to sand at moderate depth, rather than continuous rock or open sand alone. Water conditions here are typical Lake Malawi: warm, hard and alkaline, roughly 75–82 °F and pH 7.7–8.6, at depths broadly in the 16–66 ft range associated with the rock-sand transition zone this genus favours.
Feeding
Otopharynx as a genus spans several feeding strategies, from small-invertebrate pickers working sand and rock crevices to more predatory species that take small fish, and the specific diet of this undescribed form has not been documented in the literature. Given its association with the sand-rock transition habitat of the Nankumba Peninsula, the working expectation — following the pattern of related Otopharynx at similar sites — is a diet of small benthic invertebrates picked from sand and rock surfaces, supplemented opportunistically with other items as available. Precise stomach-content or foraging-behaviour data specific to this population would be needed to state its diet with more confidence.
Mating
As a Lake Malawi haplochromine, this form is expected to follow the polygynous, lek-like mating system typical of the group, with no pair bond. Males in nuptial colour hold and defend a small territory — likely a patch of open sand near rock, given the genus’s general habitat preference, sometimes centred on an excavated pit or bower — and display to females that move between territories. A receptive female approaches a displaying male, and courtship follows the standard haplochromine sequence before spawning. Because this population has been studied mainly as part of the broader Nankumba Peninsula cichlid community rather than as an individually documented taxon, specific behavioural observations for it alone are not available.
Breeding
Otopharynx sp. "Heterodon Nankumba" is, like all Lake Malawi haplochromines, a maternal mouthbrooder. Following spawning at the male’s territory, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and carries them through incubation, a process that in Otopharynx and related genera typically runs three to four weeks before she releases free-swimming fry able to feed independently. There is no male or biparental care beyond fertilisation. Clutch size has not been documented for this specific form; medium-sized Otopharynx species generally produce clutches in the range of several dozen to around a hundred eggs depending on female size.
In the aquarium
Otopharynx sp. "Heterodon Nankumba" is not a widely traded fish, and specific husbandry notes for it are scarce; the guidance here follows the general template for sand-and-rock-intermediate Otopharynx. A large footprint of at least 47–59 in suits a genus whose members often grow to a respectable size and appreciate open swimming space, combined with a sand substrate and scattered rockwork rather than dense, continuous rock, replicating the Nankumba Peninsula’s intermediate habitat.
Water chemistry should match Lake Malawi: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6, and moderately hard to hard general hardness, with stability prioritised over precision. Diet should be varied — a quality cichlid pellet supplemented with small live or frozen invertebrates such as chironomid larvae, brine shrimp and daphnia — and high-fat foods kept to a minimum. Because it is undescribed, mixing stock from different collection points should be avoided if the intent is to preserve the population as collected.
Conservation
No IUCN Red List assessment exists for this form, and none can until it is formally described and named. No status, category or year should be attached to it. The Nankumba Peninsula sits within Lake Malawi National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with formal protection from major habitat destruction, which is a more favourable conservation position than many unprotected reaches of the lake — but park status does not itself confer a Red List assessment, and ornamental collection and localised pressures within the park are not eliminated by its protected designation. The accurate statement remains that this form is unevaluated.
