Aquascape & setup

Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Placidochromis argyrogaster is a small, deep-water haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, described in 2004 by Mark Hanssens in his revision of the lake's deep-living Placidochromis. It is recorded from widely separated points around the lake — Chilola Bay in Mozambique, Lukoma Bay in Tanzania and Nkhotakota in Malawi — at depths well beyond diving range. Its name, 'silver belly,' describes the silvery underside of preserved specimens, one of the features Hanssens used to place it.

Taxonomy & naming

Placidochromis argyrogaster was described in 2004 by the Belgian ichthyologist Mark Hanssens, in his chapter 'The deep-water Placidochromis species' (pages 104-197) in The Cichlid Diversity of Lake Malawi/Nyasa/Niassa: Identification, Distribution and Taxonomy, edited by Jos Snoeks for Cichlid Press. The work named a whole cohort of deep-water Placidochromis together, and argyrogaster was one of them. The genus Placidochromis was erected by Digby Lewis in 1982 for Malawi haplochromines of calm, unspecialised appearance; it belongs to the tribe Haplochromini in the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, within Lake Malawi's vast radiation of non-mbuna 'hap' cichlids. Hanssens divided the deep-water Placidochromis into informal morphological groups; argyrogaster falls in his group 5, characterised by a silvery belly and a comparatively deep snout. Catalog of Fishes recognises it as valid — Placidochromis argyrogaster Hanssens, 2004 — with FishBase SpecCode 62393. The epithet is from Greek argyros, 'silver,' and gaster, 'belly,' referring to the silvery underside seen in specimens.

Morphology

Placidochromis argyrogaster is a small cichlid, reaching about 4.5 in standard length (FishBase), and FishBase characterises its body as comparatively short and/or deep among the group. Hanssens placed it in his group 5 of the deep-water Placidochromis, distinguished by a silvery belly and a deeper snout than other members of that group — features that, with a suite of proportional measurements and meristic counts, separate it from its many congeners. Live coloration is muted in these dim-water fish and largely lost in preservation, so the silvery belly noted in the name is a preserved-specimen character; the Cichlid Room Companion and malawi.si both figure preserved adults from Chilola Bay. The species was collected by deep trawling rather than observed alive in numbers, so detailed notes on breeding dress and sexual dimorphism are limited. FishBase credits it with high population resilience and low fishing vulnerability, consistent with a small, fairly generalised benthic hap.

Habitat

The species is a Lake Malawi endemic with an unusually scattered known range for a deep-water fish: it has been collected at Lukoma Bay on the Tanzanian shore, at Nkhotakota on the Malawian (western) side, and in Chilola Bay on the Mozambican (eastern) shore, which is the type locality. FishBase gives a depth range of about 51 to 129 metres — among the deeper-living of the Placidochromis — and malawi.si describes its habitat as deep-water bottoms below roughly 164 ft in subdued light. This is a fish of the lake's dim middle depths over soft sediment, well below the oxygen-rich, well-lit shallows. Because it turns up at points on all three national shores, argyrogaster is plausibly one of the more widely distributed deep-water Placidochromis, even if it is nowhere abundant in the records — a pattern that helped earn it a less alarming conservation status than its single-locality relatives.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study has been published for Placidochromis argyrogaster. Placidochromis are generally invertebrate-feeders and generalist micropredators, and the deep-water members are presumed to work the soft sediment for benthic invertebrates and other small prey in low light. FishBase places the deep-water Placidochromis at trophic levels around 3.2-3.3, the expected value for a small benthic invertivore rather than a piscivore or herbivore. For argyrogaster specifically, feeding is inferred from the genus and its deep soft-bottom habitat — a small benthic invertivore gleaning prey from the sediment surface — rather than recorded from stomach contents or direct observation.

Mating

Courtship and spawning behaviour have not been described for Placidochromis argyrogaster. As a Lake Malawi haplochromine it is confidently expected to be a maternal mouthbrooder: males display to receptive females, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth, and there is no lasting pair bond. Whether the deep-water Placidochromis maintain display territories on the sediment or simply spawn over open bottom is undocumented, and in the dim light below 164 ft the elaborate visual courtship of shallow Malawi cichlids is presumably toned down. What can be stated is only the general pattern that the genus and the wider flock make near-certain — a brief, polygynous, female-mouthbrooding system — rather than anything observed in argyrogaster.

Breeding

There is no published account of spawning, clutch size or fry development specific to Placidochromis argyrogaster. By the consistent biology of Malawi haplochromines, it is a maternal mouthbrooder: the female incubates a modest clutch of large, yolky eggs in her buccal cavity for roughly three weeks, then releases free-swimming fry and continues to take them back into her mouth for shelter for a short period. Comparable small haps carry clutches of a few tens to about a hundred eggs. None of this has been measured for argyrogaster, which has not been bred in captivity or studied for reproduction in the wild; the description here is extrapolated from the genus and the broader mouthbrooding flock rather than recorded for the species.

In the aquarium

Placidochromis argyrogaster is not part of the aquarium hobby. It is a deep-water endemic known from trawled specimens rather than live collection, with no hobby name, husbandry literature or breeding record; any keeping notes can only be generic to the genus.

The Placidochromis that aquarists do keep — shallow-water species such as Placidochromis electra and Placidochromis phenochilus — are managed as relatively peaceful, sand-associated Malawi haps in spacious aquaria with a deep sand bed, hard alkaline water (pH around 7.8-8.6, moderately hard) and temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius, in the company of other non-aggressive haps. A genuinely deep-water species like argyrogaster, adapted to cool, dim, comparatively low-oxygen depths over soft sediment, would be a far more demanding and unrealistic subject and is not in the trade. This is a fish of scientific rather than aquarium interest.

Conservation

Placidochromis argyrogaster was assessed by the IUCN in 2018 and listed as Least Concern. Unlike several of its single-locality relatives, it is recorded from points on all three of the lake's national shores, so it is judged to have a wide enough distribution not to qualify for a threatened category on present evidence. That said, it remains a deep-water species whose populations are hard to monitor, and the lake-wide pressures on Lake Malawi apply to it as to the rest of the fauna: heavy artisanal and commercial fishing, sedimentation from catchment deforestation, and a slowly expanding deoxygenated deep layer that compresses the habitable depth band these fish occupy. Deep trawling in particular can disturb the benthic communities that deep cichlids depend on. The Least Concern listing reflects a comparatively broad range rather than any detailed knowledge of population trends, so continued attention to deep-water fishing and water-quality pressures remains warranted.
