Maylandia pambazuko belongs to the genus at the centre of one of Lake Malawi cichlid taxonomy's longest-running disputes: the fish's genus was proposed as Maylandia by Meyer and Förster in 1984, honouring the German aquarist and cichlid author Hans Joachim Mayland, but Stauffer and colleagues judged that name inadequately diagnosed in their 1997 revision and proposed the replacement Metriaclima instead. Both names remain in active use — the Catalog of Fishes and FishBase generally follow Maylandia, while other major references use Metriaclima for the same fish — and this article follows the Catalog of Fishes convention used across this site. The precise original description and year for the species pambazuko specifically have not been confirmed against a primary source for this article, so no formal describing authority is asserted here. Morphology
Like other Maylandia, pambazuko is expected to carry a compact, fusiform mbuna body with a moderately sloped forehead, a terminal mouth with even jaws, and the genus-diagnostic bicuspid outer teeth suited to combing algae from rock. Genus members typically reach roughly 4–5 in total length. As in its relatives, strong sexual dichromatism is likely: dominant, territory-holding males would be expected to show the most saturated colour and carry the yellow-orange anal-fin egg-spots typical of the genus, while females and subordinate males stay comparatively duller — though the specific colour pattern of this species has not been documented in detail here.
Habitat
Maylandia pambazuko is documented from Hongi Island and Londo Bay, both sites in the far northern reaches of Lake Malawi near the point where the Malawi, Tanzania, and Mozambique shores converge. Like all Maylandia it is expected to be a rock-associated fish of the littoral zone, tied to wave-washed boulder habitat rather than open sand, and — as with mbuna generally — largely unable to cross stretches of open sand between rocky outcrops, a barrier that has helped fragment the genus into so many geographically isolated, closely related forms around the lake. The surrounding water carries the lake's characteristic warm, hard, strongly alkaline chemistry.
Feeding
Like other Maylandia, pambazuko is expected to be an Aufwuchs grazer, feeding on the dense mat of filamentous algae, diatoms, and small invertebrates coating sunlit rock, combing loose material from the biocover with its bicuspid teeth rather than scraping the rock bare. As in its relatives it likely supplements this diet opportunistically with plankton taken from the water above the rocks. Specific dietary data for this species has not been documented, so this account follows the well-established feeding ecology of the genus, part of the enormous grazing guild of mbuna that crops and structures Lake Malawi's rocky littoral community.
Mating

In the aquarium
Maylandia pambazuko is an uncommon locality form rather than a mainstream hobby fish, and dedicated keeping literature specific to it is limited; husbandry advice here follows the well-established Maylandia/mbuna template. A tank of at least 47 in with heavy, securely stacked rockwork over a sand base, open swimming lanes, and plenty of caves and sightline breaks would suit it, stocked as one male to several females to spread his aggression. Water should replicate the lake — hard, alkaline, and warm, maintained with strong filtration and stability. Diet should lean vegetable-based, with spirulina flake or pellet as a staple, since like other dedicated grazers it is prone to the digestive disorder hobbyists call Malawi bloat on rich, meaty diets. Because many blue-barred mbuna hybridise readily, keepers wishing to preserve the true pambazuko form should avoid mixing it with other zebra-complex Maylandia.
Conservation

As a rocky-shore endemic apparently restricted to a small cluster of known sites in the far northern lake, it would share the general pressures facing Malawi's mbuna community: sedimentation of the rocky littoral from catchment erosion, which smothers the algal turf it depends on, and collection for the ornamental fish trade.
