Aquascape & setup

Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Placidochromis sp. "Electra Type" is an undescribed blue haplochromine recorded from Nkhomo Reef in northern Lake Malawi. The qualifier "Type" is a collector's term marking this population as the one whose colour pattern is regarded as closest to the classic appearance associated with the described Placidochromis electra, even though Nkhomo Reef lies well outside that species' documented type locality and the form itself carries no formal description.

Taxonomy & naming

Placidochromis sp. "Electra Type" has no describing author and no listing in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The name references Placidochromis electra (Konings, 1990), described from Chidunga Rocks in the far south of the lake, whose electric-blue nuptial males made it one of the best-known Malawi cichlids in the aquarium trade. "Type" here is a hobby usage, not a taxonomic term — it signals that collectors regard this Nkhomo Reef population's colouration as matching the textbook electra pattern particularly closely, distinguishing it from other named electra-like forms such as sp. "Electra Blue," sp. "Electra Superior," and the geographically confirmed electra localities elsewhere in the lake. No genetic or morphological study has compared Nkhomo Reef fish directly to the nominal type series, so whether this population is conspecific with P. electra or a separate lineage that merely converges on the same colour remains unresolved.

Morphology

Males of this form are reported to show the saturated, largely unpatterned blue body colour that defines the electra type, regarded by collectors as an unusually faithful match to the described species' appearance. Body shape follows the standard Placidochromis outline — moderately elongate and laterally compressed — with genus-typical size for the group running to roughly 4.5–5.5 in total length, males larger than females. No formal measurements specific to the Nkhomo Reef population have been published. Females are expected to be considerably plainer and greyer than the blue males, as in described P. electra.

Habitat

Nkhomo Reef lies in northern Lake Malawi, a rocky reef structure distinct from the shallow southern shore around Chidunga Rocks where P. electra was first characterised. Placidochromis of the electra type are generally found at the sand-rock interface, hovering near boulder structure at the edge of open sand at moderate depth rather than deep within dense rock cover. No dedicated depth or substrate survey specific to this population has been published, but the general zone is expected to match the wider electra-group pattern.

Feeding

P. electra and its close relatives are documented invertivores, foraging near the sand-rock boundary for small benthic prey stirred up from the substrate or picked from exposed rock, rather than grazing algae as mbuna do on the surrounding reef structure. This foraging style — patrolling the transitional zone rather than committing to either open sand or dense rock — sets electra-type Placidochromis apart ecologically from both the algae-grazing mbuna and the strict sand-sifters found elsewhere in the lake. Placidochromis sp. "Electra Type" is presumed to feed the same way, though no feeding study specific to this Nkhomo Reef population has been published.

Mating

Mature males are expected to hold a display territory at the sand-rock interface and use their blue breeding colour to attract females, following the pattern documented for P. electra. Courtship in the wider Malawi haplochromine radiation runs through the standard egg-spot mechanism, in which markings on the male's anal fin mimic loose eggs and prompt the female to peck at them while collecting her own fertilised eggs into her mouth. No locality-specific courtship account exists for the Nkhomo Reef population.

Breeding

As in every Lake Malawi haplochromine, reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding: the female alone incubates the fertilised eggs and subsequent fry in her mouth for several weeks, feeding little or not at all, until the fry are released as free-swimming young. P. electra is well established and widely bred in the hobby, with clutches typically running to a few dozen eggs and a brooding period of roughly three to four weeks; no figures specific to this Nkhomo Reef form have been recorded in the wild.

In the aquarium

Where kept, this form would follow standard electra-type husbandry: a tank of at least 47 in with a sand substrate, rockwork confined to the margins, and open swimming space in the centre. Water chemistry should match the Lake Malawi standard — hard and alkaline, pH roughly 7.7 to 8.6, temperature 75–82 °F. Electra-type Placidochromis are comparatively calm by Malawi cichlid standards and are typically kept as one male with several females in a mixed community of similarly non-aggressive haps rather than housed like territorial mbuna. A quality cichlid pellet supplemented with small frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm or mysis matches their natural diet.

Conservation

Placidochromis sp. "Electra Type" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form, carries no Red List status. Its close relative P. electra has drawn conservation attention given its popularity in the ornamental trade and the collection pressure that popularity can put on individual localities; the same general caution applies to this Nkhomo Reef population, which should be treated as a potentially narrow-range form absent a formal assessment.
