Taxonomy & naming
Placidochromis sp. "Electra Boadzulu" has no describing author, no type specimen, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The trade name references Placidochromis electra (Konings, 1990), the Electric Blue Hap, whose nuptial males carry the same saturated, near-unpatterned blue that this Boadzulu Island population shows. Boadzulu lies in the southern basin of the lake, within the general region where confirmed P. electra localities are documented, but Malawi cichlid specialists keep this island population under an informal "sp." tag rather than listing it among the named electra variants, reflecting the standard cautious practice of not assuming two blue, electra-type populations are the same species without direct comparison. Until a formal study examines Boadzulu material alongside the type series, its exact relationship to nominal P. electra stays unresolved.
Morphology
Breeding males of this form are reported to show the same essentially unpatterned, saturated blue body colour associated with P. electra, though no formal account has measured or compared this population's shade, fin length, or body proportions against the nominal species or against other electra-type forms elsewhere in the lake. The body should follow the standard Placidochromis outline: moderately elongate, laterally compressed, without the deepened head or thickened lips seen in some other genus members. Genus-typical size for the electra group runs to roughly 4.5–5.5 in total length, males larger than females; no measurement specific to Boadzulu Island fish has been published. As in P. electra, females are expected to be considerably plainer and greyer than the blue males.
Habitat
Boadzulu Island sits in the southern basin of Lake Malawi near Mangochi, an isolated rocky islet rising from open water rather than a stretch of continuous mainland shore, a setting that has produced locally distinct cichlid populations elsewhere in the lake. Placidochromis of the electra type are typically found at the sand-rock interface, patrolling the boundary between open sand and boulder structure rather than deep within rock crevices. No dedicated depth or substrate survey specific to this population has been published, but the general zone matches the wider electra-group pattern: moderate depth, close to where sand meets rock.
Feeding
P. electra and its close relatives are documented as invertivores that hover near the sand-rock boundary, taking small benthic invertebrates stirred up from the substrate or picked from exposed rock, rather than grazing algae as mbuna do on the rocky faces of islands like Boadzulu. This foraging style — patrolling the transitional zone rather than committing to either the open sand or the dense rock — sets electra-type Placidochromis apart ecologically from both the algae-grazing mbuna and the strict sand-sifters of the lake. Placidochromis sp. "Electra Boadzulu" is presumed to feed in the same manner, though no feeding study specific to this island population has been published.
Mating
Mature males are expected to hold and defend a display site at the sand-rock interface, using their vivid blue colour to attract females, following the pattern documented for P. electra. Courtship in the wider Malawi haplochromine radiation runs through the standard egg-spot mechanism: the male's anal fin carries markings that mimic loose eggs, prompting the female to peck at them and draw in sperm as she collects her own fertilised eggs into her mouth. No locality-specific courtship account exists for the Boadzulu population.
Breeding
As in every Lake Malawi haplochromine, reproduction here is by maternal mouthbrooding: the female alone carries the fertilised eggs and subsequent fry in her buccal cavity, feeding little or not at all, until the fry are large enough for independent release several weeks later. P. electra is well established in the aquarium hobby, typically producing clutches of a few dozen eggs over a brooding period of roughly three to four weeks; no figures specific to the Boadzulu form have been documented in the wild.
In the aquarium
Where available, this form would be housed as any electra-type Placidochromis is: a tank of at least 47 in, sand substrate, moderate rockwork confined to the margins, and open swimming space in between. Water should follow the Lake Malawi standard — hard and alkaline, pH roughly 7.7 to 8.6, temperature 75–82 °F. Electra-type fish are comparatively calm by Malawi cichlid standards and are usually kept as one male with several females in a mixed community of similarly non-aggressive haps rather than housed like territorial mbuna. A quality cichlid pellet supplemented with small frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm or mysis suits their natural feeding habits.
Conservation
Placidochromis sp. "Electra Boadzulu" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form, carries no Red List status. Boadzulu Island's isolation makes any narrowly distributed population there potentially vulnerable to localised ornamental collection pressure, a general concern for island-endemic Malawi cichlids even absent a formal assessment of this specific form. The wider southern basin faces documented lake-level pressures — artisanal and commercial fishing, catchment sediment runoff, nutrient enrichment from shoreline development, and climate-driven changes to thermal stratification — that the broader Malawi conservation literature repeatedly flags as relevant to the region's cichlid fauna, isolated island populations included.
