Tramitichromis lituris belongs to Tramitichromis, a genus of sand-dwelling Lake Malawi haplochromines recognised during the late-twentieth-century revision that split the old catch-all genus Haplochromis into narrower, anatomically diagnosed groups; the genus is best known in the hobby for its males' habit of constructing conical or crater-shaped sand bowers to attract females. Ad Konings (Cichlids Yearbook, Vol. 2), reviewing the genus, characterises Tramitichromis by the peculiar shape of the lower pharyngeal bone: the teeth on it are uniformly slender and long, with the front-most teeth the longest of all — the reverse of most cichlids, where the anterior pharyngeal teeth are short and point forward, whereas in Tramitichromis they are long with tips bent backward. He counts four described species in the genus — T. brevis, T. variabilis, T. lituris and T. trilineatus — with a fifth or sixth still undescribed, and treats T. intermedius, which Eccles and Trewavas (1989) placed in Tramitichromis, as more likely a member of Trematocranus on the strength of its different colour pattern; this is Konings' own reassessment rather than settled consensus, and is noted here as a live point of genus-boundary disagreement rather than a resolved rename. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the reference for the currently accepted describing authority and date for this species, not restated here to avoid an inaccurate citation. Morphology
Tramitichromis species generally show a moderately elongate, laterally compressed body typical of sand-dwelling Malawi haplochromines, with males developing stronger colour at breeding condition than the plainer, silvery females. Precise published measurements for T. lituris are not confidently known here; comparable Tramitichromis species commonly reach roughly 4.5–6 in total length. The species name's reference to a smudge or blot suggests a body pattern with soft-edged rather than sharply defined markings, a plausible field character though not confirmed in detail here.
Habitat
The species is documented near Mdoka, on Lake Malawi's northern Malawian shore, with additional records from Tanzanian waters on the opposite side of the lake's northern basin. Tramitichromis is a genus of open sandy and muddy habitats rather than rock, where males excavate and maintain sand bowers used as courtship and spawning sites. Water conditions in this part of the lake follow the standard Malawi profile — warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, broadly in the mid-20s Celsius with a pH on the alkaline side of neutral.
Feeding
Tramitichromis species generally feed by sifting or picking through open sand and soft substrate for small invertebrates, a foraging mode suited to the sandy and muddy habitats the genus favours. Konings (Cichlids Yearbook, Vol. 2), examining lituris alongside its congeners brevis and variabilis, describes the mechanism behind this: the lower gill rakers are short and robust, as in sand-sifting Lethrinops, with the first two rakers reduced to small knobs while the central three to five are wide and enlarged, their tips forming an almost horizontal platform at the bottom of the mouth. This platform works as a sieve — heavier sand grains sink between the rakers and are expelled through the gill openings, while lighter material, including invertebrates and algae, is retained. Konings also links the genus's unusually long, backward-hooked anterior pharyngeal teeth (see Taxonomy & naming) to this raker arrangement, hypothesising that the teeth need to sit level with the raker tips to process food effectively, though he treats this as a plausible explanation rather than a demonstrated one. Mating

Husbandry for this species would be expected to follow the same broad template: a generous open sand area at least several centimetres deep for bower construction, hard alkaline water buffered into the high 7s to high 8s pH range, and a varied diet of quality pellets with modest invertebrate supplementation.
