Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Taxonomy & naming

Tramitichromis sp. "Mvunguti" has no scientific name of its own. The informal designation is a locality tag, taken directly from the site on the southern Lake Malawi shore where the population was recorded, following the standard convention for undescribed Malawi cichlids: genus, the abbreviation "sp." for an unassigned species, and a place name in quotation marks. It is placed in Tramitichromis on anatomical grounds — the genus, erected by David Eccles and Ethelwynn Trewavas in their 1989 monograph on Malawian haplochromine classification, is diagnosed chiefly by a steeply angled anterior blade on the lower pharyngeal bone, a departure from the more usual pharyngeal jaw geometry of related sand-dwelling haplochromines such as Lethrinops. No published description has assigned this population to any of the five currently recognised Tramitichromis species, and no close relative can be named with confidence from the accessible literature. Until a taxonomic revision addresses it, it should be treated strictly as a locality-based, Konings-recognised undescribed form, with no authority or date attached.

Morphology

Tramitichromis sp. "Mvunguti" follows the genus-typical body plan: a moderately deep, laterally compressed haplochromine carrying the diagnostic pharyngeal jaw geometry of Tramitichromis rather than any obvious external distinguishing mark. Described congeners in the genus range from roughly 5.5–8 in total length, and this form is expected to sit within that range, though no formal measurements have been published for the Mvunguti population specifically. The breeding colouration of males from this locality has not been documented in the accessible field or hobby literature, so no colour pattern should be asserted here; what is documented is the site and the genus placement. As in other Tramitichromis, sexual dimorphism is expected to follow the usual haplochromine pattern of duller, cryptic females and more strongly coloured territorial males, but this remains an inference from the genus rather than a recorded observation for this specific form.

Habitat

This form is recorded from Mvunguti on the southern shore of Lake Malawi, in the general vicinity of the South West Arm — the same broad stretch of coastline that has produced most described Tramitichromis material, including the type locality of T. intermedius at nearby Monkey Bay. The genus as a whole occupies sheltered, shallow sand or sand-mud bays rather than rocky shoreline, foraging over open sediment where invertebrate life accumulates in the uppermost centimetres of substrate. Water conditions at this part of the lake follow the typical Malawi profile: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, with temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius and pH on the alkaline side of neutral. Depth data specific to the Mvunguti population have not been published, but the genus generally keeps to shallow water, rarely far below 33–49 ft.

Feeding

Tramitichromis sp. "Mvunguti" is expected to feed as all members of its genus do: as a sand-sifting invertivore. The fish takes a mouthful of sediment, expels the inorganic sand through its gill rakers, and swallows the insect larvae and other soft invertebrates that remain. This feeding mode is shared with the related genus Lethrinops and depends on fine, clean sand rich in buried invertebrate life — coarse gravel cannot be processed the same way. No diet study specific to the Mvunguti population has been published, so this description rests on genus-wide feeding biology rather than direct observation of this particular form.

Mating

Mating behaviour has not been separately documented for the Mvunguti population, but Tramitichromis as a genus is polygynous and lek-like, matching the pattern of other sand-dwelling Malawi haplochromines. Males in breeding condition excavate and defend small pits in the sand or mud, often clustered into loose leks, and display from these sites to attract passing females. Females are not territorial; they inspect displaying males and spawn with the one they choose, with no lasting pair bond formed. This account is drawn from studies of better-known congeners such as T. intermedius rather than from direct field observation of the Mvunguti form.

Breeding

As in every Lake Malawi haplochromine, breeding is by maternal mouthbrooding. A female spawning at a male's pit takes the eggs into her mouth almost as soon as they are released, then is drawn to the egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin; in mouthing at these she takes in milt that fertilises the clutch already held in her buccal cavity. She then broods the eggs and larvae for roughly three to four weeks without feeding significantly, before releasing free-swimming fry that receive no further parental care. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; by analogy with similarly sized Tramitichromis it is likely modest, in the range of a few dozen eggs.

In the aquarium

Tramitichromis sp. "Mvunguti" is not established in the aquarium trade, and no specific husbandry record for this population is available; keepers who obtain it should follow the general template for sand-dwelling Tramitichromis. A deep bed of fine sand — at least 3–4 in — is the single most important element, since the fish forages by taking mouthfuls of substrate and filtering it through the gills; coarse gravel cannot be processed this way and can abrade gill tissue. The rest of the tank should be relatively open, since this is not a rock-dwelling species; a footprint of at least 59 in gives room for territorial males to establish sand pits without constant conflict.

Water chemistry should match Lake Malawi throughout: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH 7.7-8.6, and moderately hard to hard water held stable. Diet should be a high-quality cichlid pellet or granule supplemented with frozen invertebrate foods such as chironomid larvae, brine shrimp, and daphnia, reflecting the natural invertivorous diet. As with all Malawi haplochromines, fatty or high-fibre foods intended for algae-grazing mbuna are inappropriate and predispose the fish to bloat. Suitable tankmates are other peaceful sand or open-water haplochromines rather than aggressive rock-dwelling mbuna, which will outcompete and harass a fish of this temperament.

Conservation

Tramitichromis sp. "Mvunguti" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form without a formal scientific name, has no Red List assessment of any kind. It is currently known from a single documented locality on the southern lake shore, which — if accurate — would make any concentrated ornamental collection or local habitat disturbance a disproportionate risk relative to a wider-ranging species. No conservation status should be attached to it pending both a taxonomic description and a proper survey of its true range.
