Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Its name is Latin rather than English or a locality tag, from macula ("spot" or "blemish"), and most likely describes a spotted or blotched element in the fish's colour pattern that distinguishes it from other Tramitichromis forms in the field — a naming convention with precedent elsewhere in the genus, since the described species T. lituris is itself named from a related Latin root (litura, a smudge or blot). The genus Tramitichromis was erected by Eccles & Trewavas in 1989 on the basis of a distinctive lower pharyngeal bone structure. "Maculae" is not linked in name to any particular described Tramitichromis species; its affinities within the genus have not been published, and it is recorded from Nkolongwe on the Mozambican shore, an area of the lake less intensively surveyed than the better-known Malawian coast.

Morphology

Tramitichromis sp. "Maculae" carries the genus's flat-headed, moderately elongate build and the short, robust lower gill rakers typical of Tramitichromis. Its trade name, taken from the Latin for "spots," implies a body marked with distinct blotches or spots rather than the plainer, uniformly silvery pattern seen in some genus-mates, but a detailed published description of exactly where on the body those spots occur, or how they compare between males and females, has not been located. Beyond this colour cue, its proportions and size have not been separately documented from the wider genus range.

Habitat

This form is recorded at Nkolongwe on the Mozambican shore of Lake Malawi, in an area of the lake that receives considerably less survey attention than the Malawian coast, where most of the lake's documented cichlid diversity has been catalogued. Tramitichromis species generally occupy open sand habitat, and this population is presumed to do the same at Nkolongwe, though the site's specific character has not been described in detail in the sources available. Water conditions follow the general Lake Malawi pattern: warm, hard, and alkaline, roughly mid-20s Celsius with a pH on the alkaline side of neutral. Its precise depth range is not documented.

Feeding

Tramitichromis species are sand-sifting invertivores, and this population is presumed to forage in the genus-typical manner: taking mouthfuls of substrate, sieving out small invertebrates and algal matter with short, robust lower gill rakers, and expelling the spent sand. No diet study specific to this Nkolongwe population has been published.

Tramitichromis is defined in the hobby by males' construction of conical or crater-shaped sand bowers as courtship and spawning sites, held and defended in a polygynous, lek-like arrangement without a lasting pair bond. This population, sharing the genus's general biology, is expected to follow the same pattern at Nkolongwe, though its specific courtship behaviour has not been separately documented.

Breeding

Tramitichromis sp. "Maculae" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode confirmed across the genus and universal among Lake Malawi's haplochromine cichlids. A female would be expected to take the fertilised clutch from a male's bower into her mouth and carry it through several weeks of development before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further parental care from either parent afterward. No clutch-size figure specific to this population has been documented.

In the aquarium

This form is not established in the aquarium trade and is known essentially from field records at Nkolongwe rather than as a regularly imported or captive-bred hobby fish. A keeper who did obtain it should follow the general Tramitichromis template: a fine sand substrate deep enough for bower construction, generous open floor space, and Lake Malawi water chemistry of mid-20s Celsius, alkaline pH around 7.7–8.6, and hard water. Given the limited survey history of the Mozambican shore, keepers with confirmed wild-collected stock of this population should document provenance carefully, since it represents one of the less-studied corners of the genus's range.

Conservation

Tramitichromis sp. "Maculae" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, lacking a formal name, has no Red List status. Its occurrence on the Mozambican shore, an area with less consistent survey coverage and less formal habitat protection than parts of the Malawian coast, means both its distribution and any pressures it faces are correspondingly less well documented. No dedicated conservation study has been published; its status is unknown.
