"Brevis" in this form's trade name refers to the described species Tramitichromis brevis — named for its comparatively short body, among the shortest of the cichlids described in the same 1908 paper that first documented several Lake Malawi species — which this Magunga population is recognised as resembling. "Magunga" records the collection locality on the Malawian shore, a site already documented for a substantial number of other Lake Malawi cichlid populations. Water conditions follow the general Lake Malawi pattern: warm, hard, and alkaline, roughly mid-20s Celsius with a pH on the alkaline side of neutral. Feeding

Males' bower-building behaviour is one of the more rewarding aspects of keeping this genus, provided the tank is large enough to give a dominant male room to build without constant disruption from tankmates.
