Taxonomy & naming
Psalidodon parahybae was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1908, with the type locality given as the Rio Parahyba (Paraíba do Sul) and associated waters at Mendez, Miriahe, and Taubeté in Brazil; the lectotype is held at the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ 20685). For most of the twentieth century the species remained within the expansive genus Astyanax, one of the largest and most taxonomically complex genera in the family Characidae.
Substantial molecular and morphological revisions in the early 2020s disaggregated much of the old Astyanax into finer genera. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now records the valid name as Psalidodon parahybae (Eigenmann, 1908), with Psalidodon parahybae treated as the original combination under a prior genus placement. The species belongs to the subfamily Stethaprioninae sensu lato (or Acestrorhamphinae, depending on the authority consulted) within the family Characidae. Because many databases and regional checklists still index the fish under the Astyanax combination, both names are encountered in the literature, and the IUCN's 2022 Least Concern assessment uses the more recently revised nomenclature.
The species epithet parahybae is a Latinised genitive of Parahyba, the colonial-era spelling of the Paraíba do Sul River that forms the core of its range, making the name directly geographical.
This fish was long listed as Astyanax parahybae; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Psalidodon, and the current combination Psalidodon parahybae is followed here.
Morphology
Psalidodon parahybae is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed characin with the typical silvery body plan of the Astyanax complex: a bright, reflective flank, a faint dusky lateral stripe that may be better defined in juveniles, and a dark spot at the base of the caudal fin — a mark shared with many of its relatives. FishBase records a maximum total length of 6.7 in, placing it at the larger end of the Astyanax group, which ranges from diminutive species under 2 in to robust species exceeding 5.9 in.
Little detailed morphometric data is available in the accessible literature for this specific species. Like other members of the former Astyanax complex it presumably carries the characteristic small, robust teeth of an omnivorous, benthopelagic characin, and the typical fin arrangement of the family: a single dorsal fin, an adipose fin, and a forked caudal. Published accounts note a trophic level of 3.0 — consistent with a generalist invertivore-omnivore that browses the benthos as well as the water column.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Paraíba do Sul River basin and adjacent coastal stream systems of Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil. The Paraíba do Sul is one of the major rivers draining the Serra da Mantiqueira and Serra do Mar escarpments, flowing east through a subtropical valley before entering the Atlantic; the coastal streams to which Psalidodon parahybae is also attributed are short, fast drainages from the forested slopes of the Atlantic Forest.
As a subtropical Atlantic Forest stream fish its habitat is characterised by cool to mild water temperatures relative to tropical Brazilian species, forested riparian corridors, and relatively high dissolved oxygen from the turbulence of upland reaches. The region's freshwater ichthyofauna is highly endemic and poorly buffered against habitat loss; stream fish of this drainage have been highlighted in regional checklists as conservation-sensitive precisely because they occupy a narrow range within a biome that has lost more than 85 percent of its original extent. No detailed water-chemistry figures for the species' specific habitat have been located in the published record.
Feeding
Detailed dietary studies specific to Psalidodon parahybae have not been published in the accessible literature. FishBase assigns a trophic level of 3.0 and classifies the species as benthopelagic, indicating a generalist that feeds both near the substrate and in open water — the typical foraging profile of omnivorous Astyanax-group characins.
By analogy with well-studied relatives in the same complex and drainage system, the diet is likely to include small aquatic invertebrates (chironomid larvae, microcrustaceans, small insects), allochthonous material falling from riparian vegetation, algae, and plant matter grazed from submerged surfaces. This omnivorous flexibility is a defining trait of the group and is part of why Astyanax-lineage tetras have diversified so successfully across South and Central American freshwater systems.
Mating
No species-specific reproductive or behavioural studies for Psalidodon parahybae have been located in the available sources. As a member of the Astyanax complex and the wider Characidae, it is inferred to follow the egg-scattering strategy characteristic of the group: non-pair-bonding spawns in which sexually ripe individuals scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over the substrate, with no parental care of any kind.
In well-studied Astyanax relatives, spawning activity often peaks around seasonal cues — rising water levels and temperature shifts associated with the southern hemisphere wet season — though subtropical species in the Paraíba do Sul basin experience milder seasonal variation than Amazonian relatives. Sexual dimorphism is typically subtle in Astyanax-lineage species, with females becoming noticeably deeper-bodied and more rotund when carrying ripe eggs.
Breeding
Psalidodon parahybae is not established in the ornamental-fish trade, and no captive-breeding accounts have been traced. Predictions based on the biology of its close relatives suggest it would follow the standard open-water egg-scattering protocol of the family: a group of conditioned adults placed in a well-planted or mop-equipped spawning tank would scatter small, semi-adhesive eggs that require removal of the adults to prevent predation.
Incubation times in Astyanax relatives at subtropical temperatures (64–75 °F) tend to run somewhat longer than in tropical tetras — commonly 24 to 48 hours to hatching — with fry free-swimming within a few days of hatching. First foods for the fry of comparably sized Astyanax species are microorganisms and very fine particulate food before progression to newly hatched brine shrimp. These inferences are extrapolated from the group's biology; direct data for this species remain unpublished.
In the aquarium
Psalidodon parahybae is essentially absent from the ornamental trade. Its narrow endemic range, lack of notable colour, and the logistical constraints on collecting fish from protected Atlantic Forest stream habitats in Rio de Janeiro State mean it is not commercially harvested. The species is far more likely to be encountered in an ichthyological collection or a research institution than in a hobbyist's tank.
For the specialist who might obtain specimens through legitimate scientific exchange or captive-bred material, the subtropical origin suggests a preference for cooler water than most tropical tetras — temperatures in the range of 64–75 °F would be appropriate — and the benthopelagic feeding ecology points to a fish comfortable in moderately furnished tanks with some open bottom space. A schooling species by inference from its relatives, it would do best in groups of six or more. In the absence of published husbandry data, the keeper should treat it as a cool-water, softwater-to-moderately-hard omnivore and adjust conditions based on observation.
Conservation
Psalidodon parahybae is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment). The LC designation does not imply that the species faces no pressure — rather, it reflects that the population is not considered to have declined to the threshold for a threatened category at the time of assessment. The Paraíba do Sul basin, while heavily impacted by agriculture, urbanisation, and hydrological modification, still supports fish populations across much of its length.
The species' restriction to Rio de Janeiro State and the adjacent Atlantic Forest coastal streams nevertheless places it within one of the world's most threatened biodiversity hotspots. Atlantic Forest freshwater endemics as a group are poorly monitored, and reassessments sometimes reveal declines not captured in earlier evaluations. Regional checklists for Rio de Janeiro State freshwater fauna note the narrow distributional range of this and related species as a factor warranting ongoing monitoring. Given the pace of catchment modification in the Paraíba do Sul valley — including the legacy of large dams, channelisation, and widespread riparian clearance — the long-term security of the species depends on continued habitat retention in the upper and middle basin and in the remaining forested coastal stream corridors.
