Taxonomy & naming
Corydoras isaacisbrueckeri was described in 2026 by Luiz F. C. Tencatt, Aline P. Hercos, Vitor de Carvalho, Sara A. Santos and Marcelo R. Britto, in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 24, issue 2, article e250146) — a paper whose title also flags a companion contribution on the taxonomic status of Corydoras orcesi and a broader discussion of mouth morphology across the subfamily Corydoradinae. It belongs to the genus Corydoras within the subfamily Corydoradinae, family Callichthyidae, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Corydoras isaacisbrueckeri Tencatt, Hercos, Carvalho, Santos & Britto, 2026 as a valid, currently accepted name — the species has never carried any other combination.
The holotype is a 2.3 in SL specimen (MNRJ 56008) from igarapé da Associação dos Trabalhadores do Mamirauá, a tributary of the rio Tefé, in Tefé, Amazonas State, Brazil, with paratypes deposited across CITL, IDSM, INPA, MUBIO, MZUSP and NUP. Because the new species shares a mask-like eye blotch and a dark patch near the dorsal-fin base with the previously described Corydoras pastazensis, the describing team re-examined the type material of both C. pastazensis and the nominal C. pastazensis orcesi, confirming a synonymy between the two that had been proposed decades earlier but never fully verified — C. pastazensis orcesi is a junior synonym of C. pastazensis, and neither name applies to the Tefé population, which is a separate species in its own right.
Corydoras isaacisbrueckeri is diagnosed from most of its congeners by the combination of a conspicuous dark brown or black mask-like blotch crossing the orbit, a large transversely elongated dark patch running from the front of the dorsal-fin base down toward the ventral margin of the trunk, and the absence of any distinct blotch pattern along the flank midline — a combination that separates it in turn from C. desana, C. pastazensis, C. cortesi, C. septentrionalis and C. simulatus, all of which do carry midline blotching or striping. The same paper proposes a revised interpretation of barbel homology across Corydoradinae and five new characters describing mouth and barbel morphology, based partly on dissection of C. isaacisbrueckeri material alongside a wide comparative series.
Morphology
Corydoras isaacisbrueckeri reaches at least 2.44 in SL among the examined paratypes, with the holotype measuring 2.3 in SL; other paratypes range down to about 1.32 in SL. The head is laterally compressed with an acutely convex dorsal profile, roughly triangular in dorsal view, and the snout is well developed and conical, conspicuously pointed in some individuals — a longer-snouted build than in many short-snouted corys. The mouth is small and subterminal, about as wide as the bony orbit, with a fleshy triangular flap at the corner of the mouth and a bulbous 'maxillary bulb' region behind it; the outer mental barbel typically reaches to or just past the front edge of the gill opening.
The coloration is the species' clearest field mark. A dense concentration of dark brown or black chromatophores forms a mask-like blotch crossing the eye, running from the front of the parieto-supraoccipital bone back toward the interopercle, variably fused with a darker patch on the lower half of the opercle. A second, separate dark patch — wide and transversely elongated — spans from the front of the dorsal-fin base down toward the rear edge of the cleithrum. Crucially, the flank midline itself carries no distinct blotch or stripe pattern, the character that separates this species from several superficially similar congeners including C. pastazensis. In life the ground colour brightens with a greenish-yellow iridescence, especially across the back of the head and cleithrum.
Sexual dimorphism includes a lanceolate or tubular genital papilla in males, a structure well documented across Corydoradinae; some specimens (predominantly those bearing a genital papilla) also show elongated first and second dorsal-fin branched rays, though the describing authors note this trait appears in both juveniles and specimens lacking the papilla, so it cannot be confirmed as a reliable sex-linked character in this species. At least three male paratypes show a thickened, odontode-covered pectoral-fin spine.
Habitat
Corydoras isaacisbrueckeri is currently known from three localities, all right-bank tributaries of the rio Tefé — itself a tributary of the rio Solimões — in Amazonas State, Brazil: the type locality (igarapé da Associação dos Trabalhadores do Mamirauá), igarapé da Barreira, and igarapé do Pavão. All three are clear-water 'terra firme' streams, averaging around 23 ft in width and 19.7 in deep, with a low current and substantial riparian forest cover, though parts of the margins have been cleared for subsistence agriculture. The species was captured specifically on marginal sandbanks of coarse, yellow sand rather than in deeper channel habitat.
Water quality measured at the type locality during the 2024 dry season (August–October) recorded a temperature of 78 °F, pH 6.2, conductivity 45.6 µS/cm3, and dissolved oxygen of 4.78 mg/L — warm, soft, slightly acidic Amazon stream conditions. More than 60 other fish species were collected alongside C. isaacisbrueckeri at these sites, but no other Corydoradinae species was found in syntopy with it.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study has been published for Corydoras isaacisbrueckeri. As general genus-level context, rather than a documented finding for this species: corys are benthic omnivores and detritivores, sifting sand and fine substrate with the snout and barbels for small invertebrates, insect larvae and organic detritus, and readily accepting a varied diet of sinking foods in the aquarium.
Mating
No reproductive account has been published for Corydoras isaacisbrueckeri. As general genus-level context: corys are egg-layers that shoal and typically court in the well-documented 'T-position', in which a male aligns at right angles against a receptive female's head; milt released by the male is thought to reach the female's pelvic-fin egg basket rapidly, where a small number of eggs are fertilised before she carries and presses them onto a cleaned surface, repeating the process in small batches with no pair bond formed. None of this has been directly observed in C. isaacisbrueckeri.
Breeding
There is no captive-breeding report for Corydoras isaacisbrueckeri, a species only recently brought to scientific attention. By analogy with other Corydoradinae, spawning would be expected to follow the standard pattern seen across the group — a conditioned group with more males than females, triggered by a cool, oxygen-rich water change simulating seasonal rain, with adhesive eggs laid in small batches on firm surfaces and no parental care. Given the species' warm (78 °F), soft, slightly acidic native stream, that same range would be a reasonable starting point for any future spawning attempt, though this remains inference rather than documented practice.
In the aquarium
Corydoras isaacisbrueckeri is not yet an established aquarium species; it was described only in 2026 and no significant hobby history is known to us. By analogy with its close relatives and general cory husbandry, it would be expected to do well kept in a shoal of six or more, over a soft, fine sand substrate that spares its sensitive barbels, in warm (around 75–81 °F), soft, slightly acidic, well-oxygenated water echoing its native terra firme streams, alongside peaceful small tankmates. As with all corys, careful handling matters — the fin spines can snag in nets, and a stressed cory can release a skin toxin that is dangerous in the confined water of a transport bag — but none of this is tested husbandry specific to the species, only inference from its relatives and its documented native conditions.
Conservation
Corydoras isaacisbrueckeri has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List, as is typical for a species described in 2026. The describing authors, however, note that the middle rio Solimões region where it occurs — which includes the Tefé Floresta Nacional conservation unit, part of the Corredor Ecológico Central da Amazônia, along with several state Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável units nearby — is relatively distant from the Amazon's major deforestation frontiers and currently faces comparatively low external land-use pressure. On that basis they suggest the species would likely be classified as Least Concern (LC) under IUCN categories and criteria, a recommendation from the primary literature rather than a completed Red List assessment.
The authors do flag a broader, region-wide concern: drought and rising temperatures linked to climate change have already caused large fish-mortality events in parts of the Amazon, including in nearby Lago Tefé and its tributary streams, and such impacts are expected to increase extinction risk for Amazonian aquatic species generally in the years ahead — a caution that applies to C. isaacisbrueckeri's habitat even if no acute threat to the species itself has yet been documented.
