Cynotilapia sp. "Chilumba Deep" has never been formally described. It has no describing author, no publication date, and no entry under a validated name in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes; the name in use is an informal field/trade designation following the standard convention for undescribed Lake Malawi cichlids — genus, the abbreviation "sp.", and a qualifier, here recording both the collection site (Chilumba) and the depth at which the population was found. Cynotilapia (Regan, 1922) is defined by unicuspid, dog-like teeth, unusual among mbuna, most of which carry bicuspid or tricuspid teeth built for scraping algal turf. The "Deep" qualifier reflects a genuinely documented Lake Malawi phenomenon: populations of the same reef sometimes split by depth into shallow and deep ecomorphs that differ in colour and, in species where this has been studied closely — among Tropheops, Petrotilapia, and Labeotropheus, for example — occasionally prove reproductively isolated enough to be treated as separate taxa. Whether "Chilumba Deep" is such a lineage, or simply a depth-linked colour variant of the shallow Chilumba population, has not been resolved by any published study.
Morphology
No species-specific morphometric study exists for this form. It should show the genus's diagnostic single row of unicuspid, canine-like teeth in each jaw and the compact, moderately elongate body typical of small Cynotilapia. Deep-water ecomorphs elsewhere in the genus and across other Lake Malawi mbuna genera often run darker or more saturated in blue than their shallow-reef counterparts, a pattern generally attributed to the different, blue-shifted light environment at depth, but the specific colour pattern of "Chilumba Deep" has not been documented in the sources available for this article, and none is invented here. Genus-typical size for small Cynotilapia runs to roughly 3–3.5 in total length, with males somewhat larger than females.
Habitat
Chilumba lies on Lake Malawi's northern Malawian shore and is one of the better documented Cynotilapia collecting grounds in the lake, hosting the well-known shallow-water aurifrons-type population as well as this deeper form. "Chilumba Deep" is recorded from greater depth than that shallow population, in the rock-and-boulder slope extending below the typical snorkel-depth reef zone that most rock-dwelling mbuna occupy — likely into the range of roughly 49–115 ft, consistent with other documented "deep" mbuna ecomorphs in the lake, though the exact depth range has not been formally surveyed for this specific form. The surrounding water follows Lake Malawi's standard rocky littoral chemistry: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline.
Feeding
Cynotilapia's defining unicuspid "dog-tooth" dentition sets its feeding apart from most other mbuna, which use closely packed bicuspid or tricuspid teeth to scrape tightly bound algal turf directly off rock. Cynotilapia species instead pick loose diatoms, filamentous algae, and fine detritus from both rock and sand, often over open, sediment-dusted surfaces rather than a dense algal mat. "Chilumba Deep" is presumed to follow this genus-wide feeding pattern; at the depths it occupies, light-limited algal growth is likely sparser than in the shallow reef zone, which may push a deep population toward a marginally higher share of picked detritus and small invertebrates, though this has not been directly studied.
Mating
No breeding observations specific to "Chilumba Deep" have been published. The genus follows the standard mbuna pattern: mature males hold and defend a small territory, typically no more than a patch of rock or a shaded crevice, and display to passing females in breeding colour rather than building a nest. Cynotilapia territories tend to run smaller and less fiercely contested than those of larger mbuna genera such as Maylandia or Petrotilapia. Courtship follows the typical haplochromine sequence: a receptive female circles a displaying male's territory and spawns with him over open substrate.
Breeding
As in every Lake Malawi haplochromine, reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding. The female takes fertilised eggs into her mouth immediately after spawning and carries them, without feeding normally, until the fry are large enough to be released as free-swimming young; the male provides no further care. Clutch sizes in small Cynotilapia species are modest, typically a few dozen eggs, and the brooding period runs roughly three to four weeks in the genus generally. None of these specifics have been confirmed for the Chilumba deep-water population itself, so the figures given here are genus-typical expectations rather than documented measurements.
In the aquarium
"Chilumba Deep" is scarce in the hobby; deep-water mbuna populations are collected far less often than shallow reef fish, simply because they are harder to reach. Where it does appear, it should be kept as a standard small mbuna: ample rockwork built into caves and broken sightlines, a sand substrate, and water matching Lake Malawi's rocky zone — hard, strongly alkaline (pH roughly 7.7–8.6) and warm (75–82 °F). A tank of at least 39.5–47 in footprint suits a group kept as one male to several females, since Cynotilapia aggression, while milder than in many mbuna, is still present. Diet should lean vegetable — a good spirulina-based flake or pellet supplemented sparingly with small invertebrates — and fatty, protein-heavy foods are best avoided given the genus's general susceptibility to Malawi bloat.
Conservation
"Chilumba Deep" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form with no formal scientific name, carries no Red List status of any kind — an absence of assessment, not a statement of safety. Deep-water mbuna populations are generally harder to over-collect than shallow reef fish simply by virtue of being difficult to reach with hand nets, but if the form proves to be a genetically distinct, narrow-range population — as some studied "deep" ecomorphs elsewhere in the lake have turned out to be — it would carry the same exposure to localised pressure that any single-site Lake Malawi endemic faces. No specific threat has been documented for this form.
