Chindongo sp. "Aggressive Zebra Mbenji" is an undescribed Lake Malawi mbuna, known only by this trade name on the malawi.si database and in specialist hobby circles. It has no valid scientific name, no describing author, and no publication date, and none should be attached to it. The "sp." plus quoted-name format follows the standard open-nomenclature convention.
The name combines three elements: "Aggressive," a behavioural descriptor noted for this population; "Zebra," referring to the vertically barred body pattern found across much of the genus; and "Mbenji," the island group where it has been recorded. Compound trade names of this kind are common in the Malawi hobby, where a fish's temperament is sometimes flagged alongside its pattern and locality to warn keepers what to expect.
Chindongo is a comparatively recent genus, erected by Ad Konings in 2016 to house the group of mbuna long known informally as the "elongatus complex" — slender-bodied, rock-dwelling algae grazers previously placed in Pseudotropheus or Maylandia. This form's placement in Chindongo reflects that body-shape affinity rather than a formal description of the population itself, which remains undescribed.
Morphology
Chindongo sp. "Aggressive Zebra Mbenji" is presumed to share the genus-typical body plan: a notably elongated, slender mbuna body relative to the stockier build of Pseudotropheus and Maylandia, an adaptation associated with entering and defending narrow rock crevices. Adult size has not been separately documented for this form; genus-typical size for Chindongo runs roughly 3–4.5 in total length.
Colouration has not been documented specifically for this population beyond the "Zebra" element of its trade name, implying a vertically barred pattern broadly consistent with much of the genus, in which breeding males commonly show blue ground colour with dark bars and females are plainer. The specific hue, bar count, and any distinguishing marks for this Mbenji population have not been recorded in the sources available here.
Habitat
All three documented localities for this form — Ababi Island, Mbenji Island, and Penga Penga Island — lie within the small Mbenji Island group in south-central Lake Malawi, a tightly clustered set of islets roughly 9 mi offshore from the Malawian mainland. This isolation has made Mbenji one of the lake's notable centres of localised cichlid endemism, with several species and forms recorded nowhere else.
As with Chindongo generally, the fish is expected to occupy rocky substrate, favouring narrow crevices and boulder faces that suit its elongated body shape. Lake Malawi's upper rocky zone runs broadly 24-28 degC and pH 7.7-8.6, hard and alkaline, with Chindongo habitat typically concentrated from the shallows down to roughly 49 ft. Feeding
Chindongo — the former "elongatus complex" — are specialist epilithic algae grazers, using their narrow, elongated build to work algal turf from crevices and rock faces that stockier mbuna cannot easily access. This form is presumed to feed the same way, though no feeding study specific to this population has been published; the assignment follows from genus membership rather than direct observation.
This ability to feed in confined spaces that other mbuna cannot reach is generally regarded as the ecological payoff of the complex's distinctive slim body shape, reducing direct competition with the more heavily built Pseudotropheus and Maylandia sharing the same reef.
Mating
Chindongo as a genus is noted in the field literature for exceptional site fidelity: males of the elongatus-complex fishes are reported to hold a single crevice or cave territory for years, defending it with persistent aggression against intruders — a trait this population's "Aggressive" trade-name tag is consistent with, though the specific behavioural observations behind that tag have not been documented in the sources available here. Females are not territorial and move between males' territories when ready to spawn, as in mbuna generally.
The mechanics of courtship follow the pattern documented across Malawi mbuna: a colour-bearing male performs a quivering lateral display in front of an approaching female, leading her toward his territory rather than pursuing her into open water. Persistent, low-level pressure toward non-receptive females is normal mbuna behaviour and is the main reason a single male is always kept with several females in captivity, spreading his attention and reducing the risk that any one female is harassed to exhaustion.

The egg-spot mechanism behind this process is one of the more distinctive features of Lake Malawi cichlid biology: the yellow-orange markings on the male's anal fin closely mimic the fish's own eggs in size and colour, and the female's instinct to gather stray eggs into her mouth is what draws her toward the male's vent, where she takes in sperm instead. This indirect fertilisation method, shared across virtually the entire haplochromine radiation of the lake, lets fertilisation happen without either fish releasing gametes into open water where they would be exposed and vulnerable.
In the aquarium
Chindongo sp. "Aggressive Zebra Mbenji" is a scarce trade fish, more likely to be found through specialist Malawi cichlid importers working with named Mbenji locality forms than through general retail. Its trade name is a genuine husbandry warning: keepers should expect a notably territorial fish even relative to other mbuna, and stocking should be planned accordingly — generous rockwork with multiple broken sightlines, and caution about combining it with other elongatus-group species that might compete directly for crevice territories.
A tank of at least 47 in with dense rockwork over sand suits a small colony, kept in hard alkaline water (pH roughly 7.8-8.6, temperature 24-28 degC) with a plant-forward diet of spirulina flake, pellet, and algae wafers, meaty foods kept to a minimum to avoid the bloating syndrome associated with high-protein feeding in mbuna. A single male with several females is the standard low-conflict grouping. As with all undescribed locality forms, keep it apart from other Chindongo populations to prevent hybridisation and preserve its value as a distinct trade fish.
Conservation
Chindongo sp. "Aggressive Zebra Mbenji" has never been formally described and carries no IUCN Red List assessment of any kind; evaluation requires a valid scientific name. Its range is confined to the small Mbenji Island group, and species restricted to a single small island system are inherently more exposed to localised pressure — targeted ornamental collection, local habitat disturbance — than widely distributed mainland forms, even though no specific threat has been documented for this population. Formal description would be the prerequisite for any future Red List evaluation; until then its status is properly recorded as unassessed.
The wider Lake Malawi cichlid fauna is already recognised as under pressure: the lake's fisheries and freshwater ecosystems face documented stress from catchment deforestation, agricultural runoff, and a warming, increasingly stratified water column, problems that fall on described and undescribed cichlids alike regardless of their taxonomic status. A trade name and a place in the aquarium hobby are not a substitute for formal assessment, but they do mean this form's population is at least being watched by people with a direct interest in its continued survival at its collection sites.
