Taxonomy & naming
Chindongo sp. "Elongatus Masimbwe" is an undescribed Lake Malawi mbuna, known only by this trade name on the malawi.si database. It has no valid scientific name, no describing author, and no publication date, and none should be attached to it. The "sp." plus quoted-name format follows the standard open-nomenclature convention.
The name pairs "Elongatus," referencing the slender, elongated body shape that defines the genus and echoes the type species Chindongo elongatus (originally described as Pseudotropheus elongatus by Fryer in 1956), with "Masimbwe," one of the form's documented island localities. Chindongo was erected by Ad Konings in 2016 specifically to house this elongatus-complex group of mbuna, previously placed in Pseudotropheus or Maylandia; this form's use of "Elongatus" in its trade name reflects that genus-defining body shape rather than a claim of identity with the type species itself.
Because this population has never been formally studied, its precise relationship to Chindongo elongatus and to other elongatus-complex trade forms elsewhere in the lake has not been established.
Morphology
Chindongo sp. "Elongatus Masimbwe" is presumed to share the genus-defining body plan: a markedly elongated, slender mbuna body, distinctly more slender than the stockier build of most Pseudotropheus and Maylandia, an adaptation that lets these fish work narrow rock crevices inaccessible to bulkier mbuna. Adult size has not been separately documented for this form; genus-typical size for Chindongo runs roughly 3–4.5 in total length.
Colouration has not been documented specifically for this population in the sources consulted here. Chindongo as a genus generally shows the mbuna-typical pattern of blue-barred breeding males against plainer females, but the specific hue, bar pattern, and any distinguishing marks for this Masimbwe/Mbamba population have not been recorded.
Habitat
The documented localities for this form — Masimbwe Island and the Mbamba Islands, with Cobwe lacking a confirmed position in the records available here — sit within the Likoma Island archipelago in the middle of Lake Malawi, a small Malawian island group surrounded by Mozambican waters. This is the same general island system that hosts a number of other locally distinct cichlid forms, reflecting the isolation effect of offshore rocky habitat separated from the mainland by open water.
As with Chindongo generally, the fish is expected to favour narrow rock crevices and boulder faces suited to its elongated body shape. Lake Malawi's upper rocky zone runs broadly 24-28 degC and pH 7.7-8.6, hard and alkaline, with Chindongo habitat typically concentrated from the shallows down to roughly 49 ft. No site-specific depth record exists for this particular form.
Feeding
As a member of the elongatus complex, this form is presumed to be a specialist epilithic algae grazer, using its narrow build to work algal turf from crevices and rock faces less accessible to stockier mbuna. This ability to feed in confined spaces that other mbuna cannot reach is generally regarded as the ecological payoff of the complex's distinctive slim body shape, reducing direct competition with the more heavily built Pseudotropheus and Maylandia sharing the same reef.
No feeding study specific to this population has been published; the assignment follows from genus membership rather than direct observation.
Mating
Social behaviour has not been documented specifically for this form. Chindongo as a genus is noted in the field literature for strong site fidelity, with males reported to hold a single crevice or cave territory for extended periods, defending it against intruders and displaying to passing females from it. Females are not territorial and move between territories when ready to spawn, as in mbuna generally.
The mechanics of courtship follow the pattern documented across Malawi mbuna: a colour-bearing male performs a quivering lateral display in front of an approaching female, leading her toward his territory rather than pursuing her into open water. Persistent, low-level pressure toward non-receptive females is normal mbuna behaviour and is the main reason a single male is always kept with several females in captivity, spreading his attention and reducing the risk that any one female is harassed to exhaustion.
Breeding
Reproduction is presumed to follow the standard Lake Malawi maternal mouthbrooding pattern: the female takes eggs into her mouth at the male's territory, draws in sperm via the egg-spot markings on his anal fin, and broods the fertilised clutch orally for roughly three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. No clutch size has been documented for this specific form; genus-typical broods for small Chindongo run roughly 10-25 eggs, with no paternal care after fertilisation.
The egg-spot mechanism behind this process is one of the more distinctive features of Lake Malawi cichlid biology: the yellow-orange markings on the male's anal fin closely mimic the fish's own eggs in size and colour, and the female's instinct to gather stray eggs into her mouth is what draws her toward the male's vent, where she takes in sperm instead. This indirect fertilisation method, shared across virtually the entire haplochromine radiation of the lake, lets fertilisation happen without either fish releasing gametes into open water where they would be exposed and vulnerable.
In the aquarium
Chindongo sp. "Elongatus Masimbwe" is a scarce trade fish, more likely to be found through specialist Malawi cichlid importers than through general retail. Husbandry follows the standard elongatus-complex Chindongo template: a tank of at least 47 in with dense rockwork offering narrow crevices and caves over a sand floor, hard alkaline water (pH roughly 7.8-8.6, temperature 24-28 degC), and a plant-forward diet of spirulina flake, pellet, and algae wafers, with meaty foods kept to a minimum to avoid the bloating syndrome associated with high-protein feeding in mbuna.
A single male with several females is the standard low-conflict grouping. As with all undescribed locality forms, keep it apart from other Chindongo populations, particularly other elongatus-complex trade forms, to prevent hybridisation and preserve its value as a distinct, traceable form.
Conservation
Chindongo sp. "Elongatus Masimbwe" has never been formally described and carries no IUCN Red List assessment of any kind; evaluation requires a valid scientific name. Its range is confined to a small island group within the Likoma archipelago, and forms restricted to a single small island system are inherently more exposed to localised pressure than widely distributed mainland populations, even though no specific threat has been documented for this population. Formal description would be the prerequisite for any future Red List evaluation; until then its status is properly recorded as unassessed.
The wider Lake Malawi cichlid fauna is already recognised as under pressure: the lake's fisheries and freshwater ecosystems face documented stress from catchment deforestation, agricultural runoff, and a warming, increasingly stratified water column, problems that fall on described and undescribed cichlids alike regardless of their taxonomic status. A trade name and a place in the aquarium hobby are not a substitute for formal assessment, but they do mean this form's population is at least being watched by people with a direct interest in its continued survival at its collection sites.
