Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Copadichromis sp. "Kawanga" is an undescribed Lake Malawi Utaka, one of the open-water, plankton-feeding haplochromines that shoal above the lake floor in large numbers. It takes its name from Kawanga, a small village on the Malawian shore north of Nkhata Bay near where it was first collected, and was known for years by the informal name "Kawanga Borleyi" before Ad Konings reassigned it from Otopharynx to Copadichromis on the strength of its schooling, plankton-feeding behaviour. It ranges widely along the northern reaches of the lake on both the Malawian and Tanzanian shores. As an undescribed form it carries no authority, no publication year, no FishBase number, and no IUCN assessment.

Taxonomy & naming

Copadichromis sp. "Kawanga" has no formal scientific name, no describing author, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. It takes its trade name from Kawanga, a small village on the Malawian shore roughly 9 mi north of Nkhata Bay, close to where it was first recorded. For years it circulated in the hobby and literature under the informal name "Kawanga Borleyi" and was assigned to the genus Otopharynx on the basis of its three-spot pigmentation pattern. Ad Konings later moved it to Copadichromis, reasoning that its social and feeding behaviour — females and non-breeding males regularly gathering in large schools to feed on plankton in open water — matched the Utaka group rather than Otopharynx, whose species (with the exception of O. ovatus) feed from the substrate rather than the water column. This reassignment illustrates a broader point about the undescribed Malawi haplochromines: behaviour and ecology, not just pigmentation, inform where a form is provisionally placed pending a full taxonomic description.

Morphology

A moderately elongate, fusiform haplochromine built for open-water swimming, typical of the Utaka group within Copadichromis, with a comparatively small, protrusible mouth suited to picking zooplankton from the water column rather than scraping or sifting substrate. It is one of the smaller members of its genus: a comparative table of Utaka species published in the hobby literature lists its maximum size at around 5.5 in, tied for the smallest of the group alongside a couple of other small Copadichromis, and well under larger relatives such as C. quadrimaculatus at up to 9.5 in. Male breeding colouration and the three-spot pigmentation pattern that originally led to its placement in Otopharynx are its most distinctive visible features, though full independent documentation of this form's colour beyond that historical note is not published in detail. Geographic variation in male breeding colour is virtually absent along the western shore but pronounced in the northernmost eastern-shore populations, where a white blaze across the head — absent further south — sets certain populations apart from the rest of the form.

Habitat

Copadichromis sp. "Kawanga" is recorded along the northwestern shore of Lake Malawi and much of the northeastern shore as well, from Mdoka down to Mundola Point (south of Nkhata Bay) on the Malawian side and from Kirondo down to sites south of Mbamba Bay on the Tanzanian side. As an open-water plankton feeder it is not confined to a single rock or reef the way many mbuna are; instead it forms loose schools over open water near the shoreline and rocky drop-offs, typical of the Utaka group. Water conditions follow the lake's standard chemistry: warm, hard, and alkaline, with temperature in the mid-20s Celsius and pH on the alkaline side of neutral.

Feeding

This is a planktivore, feeding in the manner that defines Copadichromis and the wider Utaka group: it gathers in loose to dense schools over open water and picks zooplankton — small crustaceans and other drifting invertebrates — directly from the water column using its small, protrusible mouth. This distinguishes it ecologically from the substrate-feeding Otopharynx species it was once grouped with, and the schooling, midwater feeding behaviour was in fact the deciding evidence Ad Konings used when he reassigned the form to Copadichromis.

Mating

Copadichromis sp. "Kawanga" has been specifically documented practising an unusual spawning technique among Lake Malawi cichlids, sometimes described as "total oral fertilisation." Rather than the more typical pattern in which the male positions himself close to the female's vent (the "TA position") while she collects eggs, in this technique the male leads the female to a chosen spawning site and circles her; as she releases and collects her eggs the male waits nearby without adopting the TA position, then circles again and quivers his anal fin — marked with egg-spot patterning — over the site without approaching the female directly, apparently releasing sperm into the water near the nest, which the female then draws in to fertilise the eggs already held in her mouth. This variant technique has been recorded in only a handful of other Malawi species, underscoring how varied maternal-mouthbrooder spawning behaviour can be even within a single lake.

Breeding

As in all Lake Malawi haplochromines, the female is a maternal mouthbrooder, carrying the fertilised eggs and larvae in her mouth for roughly three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, without further care from either parent. Given the "total oral fertilisation" spawning technique documented for this form, virtually all fertilisation happens inside the female's mouth rather than externally, which may make the process comparatively efficient at low egg-loss even in the open, exposed spawning sites typical of schooling Utaka. Clutch size is not specifically documented for this form, but given its modest adult size — around 5.5 in — a clutch of a few dozen eggs is a reasonable expectation by analogy with similarly sized Copadichromis.

In the aquarium

As an open-water Utaka, Copadichromis sp. "Kawanga" does best in a tank that provides real swimming room rather than being entirely given over to rockwork — a long tank of at least 47 in with open water in front of a rock or cave backdrop suits its schooling habits well. It is a relatively peaceful mbuna-tank companion by Malawi standards, since it does not hold a rock territory outside of breeding, though territorial males will still stake out and defend a spawning site.

Water should replicate the lake's chemistry: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH roughly 7.7 to 8.6, and moderately hard to hard water. Diet should include a strong live or frozen zooplankton-analogue component — daphnia, brine shrimp, and similar small foods — alongside a quality flake or pellet, reflecting its natural planktivorous diet more closely than the algae-heavy diet suited to rock-scraping mbuna. Keeping a small group rather than a single pair lets its natural schooling behaviour show.

Conservation

Copadichromis sp. "Kawanga" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form, has no Red List assessment. It is recorded across a substantial stretch of the northern lake on both the Malawian and Tanzanian shores, which likely affords it more resilience than the many narrowly endemic rock-dwelling forms confined to single reefs. It nonetheless faces the general pressures affecting Lake Malawi's open-water cichlids, including targeted netting of Utaka shoals for both the food fishery and the aquarium trade. A formal taxonomic description and conservation assessment remain outstanding.
