Copadichromis sp. "Azureus Jalo" is not a formally described species. It carries no describing author, no year, and no entry of its own in Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes. The trade name follows the standard convention for an undescribed Copadichromis: the genus, "sp." to mark undescribed status, and a two-part descriptive tag — here "Azureus," borrowed from Copadichromis azureus (Konings, 1990), a described species of the southern lake whose males are famous for their intense blue breeding colour, and "Jalo," the reef where this particular population was collected. Genus Copadichromis itself was erected by Eccles and Trewavas in 1989 to hold the "utaka," the shoaling, open-water zooplanktivorous cichlids of Lake Malawi that had previously been scattered across Haplochromis and Cyrtocara. The genus is notoriously difficult to sort by eye — many species and named colour forms look alike outside breeding dress — and the shared epithet here should be read as a working comparison rather than a confirmed identification. This account treats the Jalo Reef population as its own undescribed entry rather than assuming it is Copadichromis azureus proper.
Morphology
Copadichromis sp. "Azureus Jalo" is expected to share the fusiform, streamlined body typical of the open-water utaka — the build of a fish that hovers and darts in midwater rather than clinging to rock. Size has not been documented specifically for this population; the nominal Copadichromis azureus reaches roughly 5.5 in total length by FishBase measurement, with wild males to about 6 in, and this form can reasonably be expected to fall in a similar range. Colour is the whole reason for the trade name: dominant males of nominal C. azureus turn a deep, metallic azure-blue with a blue breast and a yellow-edged anal fin, while females and non-breeding fish stay a plain beige-silver marked with three dark flank spots. Whether the Jalo Reef population shows precisely this pattern has not been independently confirmed in the sources available here, though the trade name implies it does.
Habitat
The population is documented from Jalo Reef, in the southern half of Lake Malawi. Like other Copadichromis, it is expected to occupy the inshore, open-water zone just off the reef rather than the reef structure itself, feeding and shoaling above sand and rock rather than sheltering within it. Water conditions follow the lake-wide standard for Lake Malawi cichlids: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, with the nominal species recorded across a broad depth band of roughly 33–108 ft. Its range beyond Jalo Reef, and its relationship to other populations carrying the azureus name elsewhere on the southern shore, are not established for this specific form.
Feeding
As a utaka, this form is expected to be a specialist zooplanktivore, hovering in open water just off the reef and picking individual copepods and other small planktonic animals out of the water column with a fast, protrusible mouth. This is the defining feeding mode of Copadichromis and its close relatives, built around large eyes for spotting drifting prey and numerous fine gill rakers for straining it. No feeding study specific to the Jalo Reef population has been published; this account follows the well-documented genus pattern.
Mating
Utaka mating follows a lek-like pattern with no pair bond. Mature males move to the bottom near the reef and build or defend a spawning site — typically a shallow sand bower or a territory at the rock-sand interface — where they display in nuptial colour to draw passing females. Females travel in loose schools outside of breeding and visit displaying males to select a mate before spawning at his site. No courtship study specific to this population has been published; this account follows the pattern documented for Copadichromis azureus and other southern-lake utaka.
Breeding
Copadichromis sp. "Azureus Jalo" is expected to be a maternal mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode shared by every Copadichromis. A female spawns at a displaying male’s site, immediately takes the eggs into her mouth, and is drawn to the egg-spot markings on his anal fin, taking in the milt that fertilises the clutch already held in her buccal cavity. She then broods the eggs and fry alone for roughly three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming young, with no male role beyond spawning. Clutch size has not been documented for this specific population; utaka of this size typically carry on the order of a few dozen eggs per brood.
In the aquarium
Copadichromis sp. "Azureus Jalo" is an uncommon locality utaka in the trade, appealing mainly to keepers interested in wild-type Copadichromis diversity rather than to casual buyers. Its needs follow the general template for an open-water Malawi utaka.
Because this is a midwater shoaler, swimming space matters more than decoration: a tank of at least 59 in in length, with a large open span of fine sand and a modest rock structure at one end rather than dense rockwork throughout, suits it far better than a rock-crammed mbuna setup. Water chemistry should mirror Lake Malawi — warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, pH on the alkaline side of neutral — with regular partial water changes to control nitrate. A single male with several females is the standard low-stress arrangement, since a colouring male in a confined space can harass a lone female persistently. Diet should be varied — quality flake or pellet supplemented with frozen or live zooplankton-type foods such as brine shrimp, mysis, and daphnia — and calm tankmates such as other utaka or peacocks are a better match than aggressive mbuna, which will outcompete and harass a fish built for open water rather than rockwork.
Conservation
Copadichromis sp. "Azureus Jalo" has not been evaluated by the IUCN, and as an undescribed form it has no Red List status of any kind. That is a statement about its taxonomy, not its safety. Worth noting, though not directly transferable without confirmed identity: the nominal Copadichromis azureus, whose epithet this trade name borrows, is itself assessed as Near Threatened, reflecting general pressure on southern-lake utaka from both fishing and ornamental collection. If the Jalo Reef population is eventually shown to be the same species, or a closely related one, it would plausibly face similar pressures; until then, the honest summary is that it is unassessed.
