Taxonomy & naming
Copadichromis sp. "Mloto Liuli" is not a formally described species, and the uncertainty around it is unusually well documented for an aquarium trade name. Copadichromis mloto was described by T. D. Iles in 1960 from Nkhata Bay, then went essentially unidentified in the field for almost six decades, confused with the very similar Copadichromis virginalis; a 2023 whole-genome study by Turner and colleagues, published in Hydrobiologia, finally resolved the two species using 51 fresh specimens. In the course of that work the authors specifically flagged that the fish circulates in the hobby under trade tags including "Ivory Head Mloto" and locality names such as "Luwala Reef," "Mloto Undu," and — by name — "Mloto Liuli," adding that several of these "may turn out to be undescribed relatives rather than Copadichromis mloto proper." That is about as direct a statement as exists in the literature for any of the forms in this batch: this population’s exact trade name was named by taxonomists as a likely candidate for its own, still-unpublished species status, though the work to confirm that has not been done. Copadichromis as a whole belongs to the utaka guild erected by Eccles and Trewavas in 1989.
Morphology
This form is expected to share the slender, streamlined build documented across the mloto complex, with the nominal species reaching a maximum of about 5.5 in total length by FishBase measurement. Breeding males across the complex turn dark blue-black over the body with a brilliant metallic-blue head and nape — a "blaze" not unlike that of the unrelated but similarly coloured Copadichromis azureus — and at least one related trade form carries a red-flushed dorsal-fin band. Females and juveniles across the complex stay a drab grey-beige with a light yellowish wash, a muted, plastic appearance that is part of why Copadichromis mloto itself evaded confident identification for so long: Iles never had a breeding male in his original type series. Whether the Liuli population shows the standard complex pattern or some distinguishing variation has not been documented in detail here.
Habitat
The population is documented from Liuli, on the Tanzanian shore of Lake Malawi. The wider mloto complex is genuinely pelagic by Malawi cichlid standards, recorded in trawls from about 59 ft down to over 328 ft, favouring open water and the productive, well-mixed upper and middle depths over shallow littoral rock. If this population shares that ecology, it is a fish of open water rather than a particular reef outcrop. Water conditions otherwise follow the lake-wide standard: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline.
Feeding
As a member of the mloto complex, this population is expected to be a specialist zooplanktivore, picking copepods and other small crustaceans from open water with the fast, protrusible mouth and dense gill-raker array typical of Copadichromis. The complex matters ecologically and commercially beyond any single trade name: Copadichromis mloto in particular has been identified as the "true utaka" most heavily targeted by trawl and beach-seine fishing on the lake, a fishery that puts direct pressure on shoaling, open-water species like this one, in sharp contrast to the ornamental-trade pressure that dominates for showier, rock-dwelling Malawi cichlids. No feeding study specific to the Liuli population has been published.
Mating
Mating in the mloto complex follows a lek-like, seasonal pattern: males build shallow sand-bower craters at depth and display from them in nuptial colour, and the older literature records the nominal species breeding from August to November, offset from the May–June season of its look-alike Copadichromis virginalis — a seasonal separation that may help keep the two from interbreeding where their ranges overlap. Whether this Liuli population follows the same seasonal pattern has not been documented specifically.
Breeding
Copadichromis sp. "Mloto Liuli" is expected to be a maternal mouthbrooder, like the rest of the genus. After spawning at the male’s bower, the female takes the eggs into her mouth and, drawn to the egg-spot markings on his anal fin, takes in the milt that fertilises the clutch she already holds. She broods the eggs and fry alone for roughly two to three weeks before releasing free-swimming young, with no male role beyond spawning. Clutch size is not well documented for the nominal species or this population; a modest brood of a few dozen eggs is expected for a utaka of this size.
In the aquarium
Copadichromis sp. "Mloto Liuli" is an uncommon fish in the trade, most likely to appear as a wild import labelled with its collecting locality. It takes prepared foods readily once settled — quality flake plus frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and bloodworm — and asks for the same water as the rest of the lake’s fish: hard, alkaline, and warm. The important care point is space and society rather than difficulty: this is an active, open-water shoaler, so a tank of at least 47–59 in with a large open span of sand and modest rock structure, kept in a group of one or two males with several females, suits it far better than a cramped, rock-stuffed mbuna setup. Because the mloto/virginalis complex is genuinely tangled, and this specific trade name has been flagged in the scientific literature as a likely undescribed relative, wild stock sold under it is not always the same fish from batch to batch — locality data from the importer is worth more than the label alone.
Conservation
Copadichromis sp. "Mloto Liuli" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form, has no Red List status of its own. The nominal Copadichromis mloto, the complex this trade name is drawn from, is currently assessed as Data Deficient with a decreasing population trend — a downgrade in confidence, not a clean bill of health, driven partly by the fact that Copadichromis mloto, Copadichromis virginalis, and related forms are lumped together in fisheries statistics, making the complex essentially unmeasurable from catch data even as it is intensively fished. The genomic work that named "Mloto Liuli" specifically also raised the possibility of cryptic, still-undescribed diversity within the complex — meaning that if lake-wide catch and trade statistics currently treat several distinct populations as one, the loss of a narrowly distributed form like this one could go unnoticed in the aggregate numbers. The honest summary is that it is unassessed, in a complex that is itself a byword for how much taxonomic uncertainty can hide inside a single fished lake.
