A footprint of at least 59 in is a sensible minimum for a group. Water should follow the Lake Malawi standard: warm, hard, and alkaline, with regular partial water changes to control nitrate. Diet should include a quality cichlid pellet or flake as staple, supplemented with small frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and cyclops that approximate the zooplankton diet this fish takes in the wild; fatty foods should be limited, as they predispose Malawi cichlids to bloat.
