Taxonomy & naming
Copadichromis sp. "Virginalis Mandalawi" has no formal description, no scientific authority, and no Catalog of Fishes entry; the name is an open-nomenclature trade designation linking the population to the described species Copadichromis virginalis (Iles, 1960) and to its collection locality, Mandalawi Reef. Both Copadichromis virginalis and the closely related Copadichromis mloto were, for six decades, effectively indistinguishable in the field and in fisheries data; a 2022 whole-genome and geometric-morphometric study by Turner and colleagues (Hydrobiologia) finally separated the two, and in doing so confirmed that both species are themselves complexes of geographically separated colour races, several of which may yet prove to be distinct species. Konings' own field notes from the 1990s already anticipated this: at Gome Rock alone he documented at least three distinguishable Virginalis-type populations, one of which he left formally unassigned pending further study. "Virginalis Mandalawi" belongs to this same unresolved cluster; no published source has determined whether it represents true Copadichromis virginalis, the related C. mloto, or a separate undescribed population.
Morphology
No detailed morphological description has been published for the Mandalawi Reef population specifically. Across the wider virginalis-mloto complex, breeding males typically turn dark grey to blue-black over the body with a bright "blaze" — a band of colour, most often yellow or pale blue, running from the head along the back — while females and non-breeding fish remain plain, silvery and unspotted, the "pure utaka" pattern shared by this group. Adult size across the complex runs to roughly 5–5.5 in total length for the type species, though populations vary; no measurement specific to "Virginalis Mandalawi" has been published, and none should be assumed without direct examination.
Habitat
The documented locality for this population is Mandalawi Reef, in Lake Malawi. Copadichromis virginalis and its close relatives are open-water, demersal utaka rather than rock-hugging specialists, hanging in the water column over sandy or muddy bottoms near reefs and rocky shores; across the wider complex, specimens have been recorded from as shallow as roughly 59 ft down to more than 328 ft in trawl surveys. No depth or micro-habitat data specific to "Virginalis Mandalawi" has been published, so this should be read as complex-typical rather than confirmed for the population. As throughout Lake Malawi, the water here is warm, hard and strongly alkaline.
Feeding
No population-specific dietary study has been published for "Virginalis Mandalawi". As a member of the virginalis-mloto group, it is presumed to be an open-water zooplanktivore, hanging in the water column and picking individual planktonic animals — copepods and other small crustaceans — using a small, highly protrusible mouth, with a long series of fine gill rakers to retain prey. This feeding guild matters beyond any single reef: the wider utaka group converts the lake's plankton production into fish biomass at a scale large enough to support both larger predators and Malawi's artisanal and commercial fisheries, which net open-water Copadichromis shoals in quantity as a food fish.
Mating
No breeding-behaviour observations specific to this population have been published. True Copadichromis virginalis is documented as a bower-builder that breeds in association with rock: males dig a crescent-shaped crater in soft substrate beneath an overhanging slab, sized as large as or larger than the rock itself, so that the rock forms the ceiling of the spawning site. A male in full colour displays from the nest to entice receptive females, and can be persistent enough in courtship that keepers of the type species recommend one male to several females to spread the attention. Whether "Virginalis Mandalawi" follows this same nest form and courtship pattern has not been confirmed, but given its close relationship to the complex it is a reasonable expectation rather than a documented observation.
Breeding
As in every Copadichromis and every Lake Malawi haplochromine, reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding: the female lays her clutch at the male's spawning site, immediately takes the eggs into her mouth, and fertilises them there after drawing in his milt via the egg-spot pattern on his anal fin. She alone carries the developing brood for roughly three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further care from the male. No clutch counts have been documented for "Virginalis Mandalawi" specifically; among the open-water utaka the best-quantified figure is a mean of about 49 eggs recorded in the related Copadichromis chrysonotus, and this form is expected to fall in a similar genus-typical range.
In the aquarium
Copadichromis sp. "Virginalis Mandalawi" is an uncommon aquarium fish, reaching keepers, when it does, through specialist Malawi importers rather than general retail. Because it is presumed to be an active, shoaling, open-water utaka, a large tank is important, with swimming room prioritised over rockwork — a footprint of at least 59 in is a sensible floor for a group. Decor should be simple: a sand bed for the male to work, a few rock piles for structure, and otherwise open water. Water should be hard and strongly alkaline, matching the lake (roughly 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.8). Suitable tankmates are calm, similarly sized open-water haplochromines and peacocks; housing it with mbuna or other belligerent cichlids is a common mistake, since this group is genuinely peaceful by haplochromine standards. Given the unsettled taxonomy of the wider virginalis complex, keepers should note that stock traded under locality names such as this one may not be reliably distinguished from related forms, including Copadichromis mloto.
Conservation
Copadichromis sp. "Virginalis Mandalawi" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form, carries no Red List status of any kind — an absence of assessment, not a certificate of safety. Its documented range, on current information, is centred on Mandalawi Reef. The wider virginalis-mloto complex to which this population is provisionally linked includes species now formally assessed: Copadichromis virginalis is Near Threatened, and C. mloto is Data Deficient, both reflecting substantial pressure from commercial and artisanal fisheries that target open-water utaka shoals across the lake. That pressure is not specific to any one locality, and there is no reason to assume a narrow-range population like this one is exempt from it, even though no population-specific data exists.
