Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Copadichromis trimaculatus, the three-spot utaka or "Malawi torpedo," is an open-water zooplankton feeder endemic to Lake Malawi. It belongs to the utaka — the silvery, free-swimming haplochromines that hang in shoals over the lake's offshore reefs, picking copepods and other plankton from the blue water with a remarkably protrusible mouth. The species takes both of its names from the row of three dark blotches along each flank, a mark it wears for life. Breeding males trade that silvery anonymity for a yellow body and steel-blue head, descend to a rocky ledge at 25 to 30 metres, and defend a spawning station to which ripe females come, mate, and depart to brood their eggs alone.

Taxonomy & naming

The three-spot utaka was described by the British fisheries biologist Thomas Derrick Iles in 1960 as Haplochromis trimaculatus, in his landmark paper on the zooplankton-feeding haplochromines of Lake Malawi — the assemblage that local fishermen call utaka. Iles named ten species in that single 1960 work (among them Haplochromis mloto, Haplochromis borleyi, Haplochromis boadzulu, Haplochromis nkatae and Haplochromis jacksoni), drawing fine distinctions within a notoriously uniform, silvery group. The type locality is given as Nkhata Bay and Likoma Island, on the western and central sides of the lake. The species was later transferred to Copadichromis, the genus Eccles & Trewavas erected in 1989 to hold the bulk of the utaka, and the combination Copadichromis trimaculatus (Iles, 1960) — the parentheses signalling the move out of the original genus — is treated as valid by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, FishBase and the Cichlid Room Companion. (Beware the near-homophone Copadichromis quadrimaculatus (Regan, 1922), a separate four-spot species; the names are easily confused.) Within Copadichromis it sits close to Copadichromis chrysonotus, with which Iles noted it is very similar and may even share mixed brooding behaviour; the two are reliably separated by the three well-defined flank spots, which in Copadichromis trimaculatus are sharper and more consistent. Recent molecular work on the utaka confirms the group as a tight, rapidly radiated lineage in which species boundaries are still being resolved.

Morphology

This is a moderately large, torpedo-shaped utaka — the streamlined, slightly elongate build that suits a fish living in open water rather than picking among rocks. FishBase records a maximum of about 7.5 in total length, while field accounts on malawi.si give larger live sizes of up to roughly 9 in for males and 8.5 in for females. The defining feature, and the source of both the scientific epithet and the common name, is a row of three discrete black spots along each flank, present in both sexes and at all ages. Non-breeding fish — females, juveniles and out-of-season males — are silvery to pale grey with yellowish fins and the three dark marks standing out clearly against the light body. The mouth is small and highly protrusible, the lake-wide hallmark of the utaka, and the gill rakers are long and numerous, both adaptations for sieving plankton. Sexual dichromatism is pronounced in breeding condition: a ripe male turns yellow over the body with a blue or steel-blue head and a clean white margin to the dorsal fin, while still carrying the three spots. Females and juveniles keep the silvery, yellow-finned pattern year-round.

Habitat

Copadichromis trimaculatus is endemic to Lake Malawi (also called Lake Nyasa), the great rift lake shared by Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, and it is widely distributed around its shores. It is an open-water and rocky-habitat fish: malawi.si reports it most commonly at depths around 98 ft, over and near reefs and rocky outcrops rather than out in the truly pelagic centre of the lake. Like other utaka it spends much of its time as free-swimming shoals in the water column above the substrate, dropping to the rocks chiefly to breed. The lake itself is warm, hard and alkaline; FishBase gives a temperature range of about 73–81 °F, a pH of 7.4 to 8.4, and a wide hardness span (7 to 30 dH) that reflects Malawi's mineral-rich, buffered water. These are the stable, oxygen-rich conditions of the upper, sunlit layer of the lake, above the permanently anoxic depths.

Feeding

The three-spot utaka is a zooplanktivore — a specialist on the small drifting animals (chiefly copepods, with cladocerans and other plankton) suspended in open water — and FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.4. The whole anatomy of the utaka is built for this: the small, sharply protrusible mouth shoots forward to engulf individual prey, and the long, closely set gill rakers help retain them. malawi.si additionally notes that the species carries an intestinal tract two to three times longer than that of most other utaka and describes its feeding as including phytoplankton, suggesting a diet that, while plankton-based, may take in more plant material than its relatives. In life it forms large feeding shoals that hang in the blue water above the reefs, a behaviour shared across the utaka and central to their ecological role: collectively they convert the lake's vast standing crop of plankton into fish biomass, and as such the utaka have long been the backbone of Lake Malawi's artisanal open-water fishery.

Mating

Reproduction follows the lek-like pattern typical of the rock- and reef-associated utaka. As the spawning season approaches, males abandon the anonymity of the feeding shoal, colour up into the yellow-bodied, blue-headed breeding dress, and move down to the reef, where each establishes and defends a territory centred on a rocky ledge at roughly 82–98 ft depth. There the male displays to passing females and drives off rival males. Females remain in their plainer silvery dress and visit the territories to mate; there is no lasting pair bond. Outside the breeding season the species is described as generally peaceful, the aggression being seasonal and tied to the defence of these spawning stations rather than a year-round territoriality.

Breeding

Copadichromis trimaculatus is a maternal mouthbrooder, in the classic Lake Malawi haplochromine manner. After a female spawns at the male's rocky ledge, she takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and carries them alone; the male contributes nothing further. According to malawi.si the spawning season in the lake runs from August to December, and the female broods the eggs for about 21 days, continuing to guard the fry for a period after they become free-swimming. The closely related Copadichromis chrysonotus is noted for pelagic, open-water spawning rather than substrate-based breeding, and Iles long ago remarked that the two species are similar enough that mixed broods may occur — a reminder that, within this tightly knit group, reproductive details are still being worked out. As with all mouthbrooding cichlids, brood size is modest and the heavy investment goes into protecting a small number of well-developed young rather than scattering many eggs. No clutch count has been published specifically for Copadichromis trimaculatus, but the open-water utaka are low-fecundity brooders: Smith (2000) recorded a mean of about 49 eggs (roughly 30 to 60) in the closely related Copadichromis chrysonotus, the genus-typical figure this species is expected to share.

In the aquarium

Copadichromis trimaculatus is an intermediate-level Lake Malawi cichlid that rewards keepers who respect its open-water nature. It is a midwater swimmer — not a rock-skulker — and tank size matters more than with many mbuna. A single male with two or three females needs no less than a 300-litre (roughly 75-gallon) footprint; a group of six or more, which is how the species actually behaves in the lake, is more comfortable in 120 US gal or larger. The design of the tank should reflect its habitat: a clean, open swimming volume is the priority. A thin layer of fine sand (tan or cream, to suggest lake-bottom colour) suits the substrate; a modest rock arrangement toward the back provides refuge and gives the male somewhere to display, but the front two-thirds of the tank should be clear. Dense vegetation is out of place and not needed.

Water chemistry should match the lake's hard, alkaline profile: pH 7.8–8.6 is ideal (the species tolerates the full Malawi range of roughly 7.4–8.4 but does best in the upper part of that band), total hardness 10–25 dH, and temperature 73–81 °F. Strong mechanical and biological filtration with a good turnover rate keeps the dissolved-oxygen levels this open-water species expects. These parameters are identical to standard Malawi rift-lake conditions; a properly maintained Malawi-community tank is already suitable. Never allow the pH to slip below 7.5 or let organic waste accumulate — both invite Malawi bloat, a rapid, often fatal digestive illness that is the primary killer of haplochromine cichlids in captivity and is almost always linked to deteriorating water quality or an inappropriate diet.

In the company of other Malawi cichlids the three-spot utaka is a reasonable citizen outside spawning condition. It pairs well with peacocks (Aulonocara spp.) and other mid-sized, non-aggressive haplochromines in the 6–8.5 in range. Avoid mbuna: the rockdwelling mbuna tend to be persistently aggressive, chase midwater fish relentlessly, and eat a diet high in spirulina and vegetable matter that is inappropriate for a zooplanktivore like this species. Also avoid very small fish — utaka of this size will eat anything that fits in their protrusible mouth. Within the species, one male should be kept with two or more females; a single male–female pair typically results in the female being harassed to exhaustion.

Diet in captivity should match the utaka's natural zooplanktivory. High-quality cichlid pellets or flake form the base; supplement heavily with frozen or live cyclops, daphnia, artemia, and mosquito larvae. Avoid or sharply limit high-protein foods such as beefheart or bloodworm, which are too rich for the Malawian gut and contribute to bloat. Spirulina-heavy mbuna foods are unsuitable as a staple. Feed small amounts two to three times daily — the species is accustomed to picking plankton continuously in the water column, so modest, frequent meals better mimic its natural feeding pattern.

Breeding in captivity follows the lake pattern: the male colours up fully (yellow body, blue head, white-edged dorsal), constructs no nest but defends a chosen patch of sand or shallow hollow on a rock, and displays vigorously to females. A ripe female spawns with him, immediately takes the eggs into her mouth, and broods them for approximately 21 days at 77 °F, a period that shortens slightly at warmer temperatures. The female should ideally be removed to a species-only or quiet holding tank once she is clearly holding; communal tanks with active males and tankmates risk persistent harassment that causes the brooding female to spit the brood early. Clutch sizes are modest — expect 30–60 fry, consistent with the open-water utaka norm — and the fry are large enough at release to take baby brine shrimp and fine-ground flake immediately. Copadichromis trimaculatus is not yet as consistently available in the trade as Copadichromis borleyi or Copadichromis chrysonotus, but it does appear with dedicated Malawi specialists, and captive-bred stock is by far preferable to wild-caught fish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Copadichromis trimaculatus as Least Concern (assessed 22 June 2018), reflecting its wide distribution around Lake Malawi and its apparently large, healthy population. It carries no CITES listing. As a commercially important utaka it is taken in the lake's open-water fishery, and it is also collected for the aquarium trade, but neither is currently flagged as a population-level threat for this widespread species. The broader context, however, is the mounting pressure on Lake Malawi itself: heavy and in places intensifying artisanal fishing — the utaka are a primary target of that fishery — together with catchment deforestation, sedimentation and nutrient loading are documented stresses on the lake's inshore ecosystems. None is recorded as an immediate danger to this particular species, but they form the backdrop against which the long-term status of all of Malawi's open-water cichlids should be read.
