Labidochromis strigatus is a formally described member of Labidochromis, one of the largest and most taxonomically active mbuna genera in Lake Malawi, currently comprising roughly twenty accepted species along with numerous undescribed "sp." forms still being sorted by pattern, distribution, and, increasingly, genetics. Species in this genus are notoriously difficult to separate in the field, since many share a broadly similar elongate body and small mouth and differ mainly in subtle colour and striping details — exactly the kind of character the epithet strigatus ("striped") signals for this species. Labidochromis strigatus is documented from Chizumulu Island, one of Lake Malawi's two inhabited offshore islands (alongside Likoma) in the northern part of the lake, an area whose isolated rocky shoreline has produced a number of locally endemic mbuna forms found nowhere else. Like other Labidochromis it is a rock-dweller of the littoral zone, living among boulders and in crevices rather than over open sand, where its specialised jaw gives it access to invertebrates tucked deep in narrow gaps. As an island-restricted population, its confirmed range is narrow, and open water separating Chizumulu from the mainland shore likely limits natural gene flow with related populations elsewhere in the lake.

Diet should combine a quality spirulina-based staple with occasional small invertebrate foods such as frozen mysis or brine shrimp, reflecting the genus's part-invertivorous natural diet, while avoiding the fatty, protein-heavy feeding regimes that predispose Malawi cichlids to bloat. As with most locality-specific Labidochromis, keepers interested in preserving pure stock should avoid housing it alongside closely related striped congeners, since hybridisation among similar-looking Labidochromis species is a well-known risk in mixed Malawi tanks.
