Taxonomy & naming
Labidochromis textilis was described by the American ichthyologist Michael K. Oliver in 1975, in the paper 'Labidochromis textilis, a new cichlid fish (Teleostei: Cichlidae) from Lake Malawi,' published in Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington (volume 88, pages 319–330). It was the first Labidochromis species Oliver described, and it was designated a new species on the basis of its distinctive cross-hatched body patterning, fin-ray counts, and lower pharyngeal bone morphology. The holotype and paratypes were taken during surveys in the late 1960s and early 1970s; Oliver noted in the paper that the collection locality was 'probably Likoma Island,' a qualification he was candid about — the specimens lacked a precise locality tag. That uncertainty has become taxonomically consequential: the IUCN Red List assessment published by Ad Konings and Jacqueline Kazembe in 2018 states plainly that the species does not occur around Likoma or Chizumulu islands, and places the confirmed range on the intermediate rocky coast from Undu Reef (Tanzania) southward to Metangula (Mozambique). The type locality as published is therefore unreliable, and the species is now understood from its confirmed field range, not from Oliver's hedged original locality. The original combination — Labidochromis textilis — has stood; the genus Labidochromis was erected by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1935 and substantially revised by Digby Lewis in 1982, whose monograph is the standard taxonomic reference for the genus. Lewis treated textilis as a valid species and retained it in Labidochromis without reassignment. The species carries no recognised synonyms. In the aquarium trade it has occasionally been sold as 'Labidochromis exasperatus,' a name without standing in formal taxonomy. Morphology
This is a small cichlid of standard mbuna proportions: elongate, laterally compressed, with the narrow, acutely pointed snout and small, forward-leaning (procumbent) outer teeth that define the genus. FishBase records the maximum as 3 in standard length for adult males; field observers and Konings's accounts place typical wild adults at around 3–3.5 in total length, making it one of the smaller members of a small genus. The body shape itself is unremarkable for a Labidochromis, but the patterning is what caught Oliver's eye and prompted the species name: the scales carry a dark outline and the body bears a dark midlateral stripe, resulting in a regular cross-hatched or netted texture across the flanks — 'textilis,' Latin for woven, captures it exactly. Background colouration is pale yellow to yellowish-white in females and immatures; breeding males darken considerably, the cross-hatch intensifying, and acquire a blue-black ground colour that throws the patterning into sharper relief. The dorsal fin carries a dark sub-marginal band. Sexual dimorphism is present but moderate: adult males are more boldly pigmented, typically larger, and carry more conspicuous egg-spots on the anal fin; females remain paler and slightly smaller. Juveniles of both sexes resemble adult females. The lower pharyngeal bone, which Oliver illustrated and described in detail, is diagnostic: its dentigerous surface and tooth form distinguish textilis from sympatric congeners such as Labidochromis caeruleus and Labidochromis chisumulae.
Habitat
Labidochromis textilis is endemic to Lake Malawi and restricted to its east-central coast. The IUCN assessment gives the range as Undu Reef in Tanzania (approximately 12°S) south to Metangula in Mozambique (approximately 14.3°S), encompassing the intermediate rocky habitat of the Mozambican and southern Tanzanian shores. malawi.si records two well-documented populations at Lumbaulo (Mozambique) and Hai Reef, both photographed by Ad Konings. The species is absent from Likoma and Chizumulu islands, which sit near the middle of the same stretch of lake — an important distributional fact that contradicts the original type locality and suggests the species is coastal, not island-associated. It inhabits what Lake Malawi biologists call the 'shallow intermediate habitat': rocky shelves and boulder clusters grading into sediment, typically at depths between about 3 and 15 metres, where the substrate is a mosaic of exposed rock, coarse rubble, pebble-and-sand pockets, and mixed algal cover. This biotope differs from the near-vertical, wave-swept rocky walls preferred by the most exposed mbuna species and from the open sand flats favoured by peacock cichlids. Within the intermediate zone, Labidochromis textilis exploits the small crevices, pockets and algal rubble that its narrow snout and forceps teeth are adapted to probe. The water chemistry of the lake across this region is stable and well-characterised: surface water runs warm (roughly 75–82 °F, with greater variation near shore in the dry-season upwelling period, June to September), hard, and strongly alkaline, with a pH typically around 7.7 to 8.6 in the upper water column. Conductivity in the east-central basin runs approximately 200–250 µS/cm. No species-specific hardness figure has been published for Labidochromis textilis; values are inferred from habitat.
Feeding
Labidochromis textilis is a small-invertebrate picker, and the genus's narrow-snout anatomy is its key feeding tool. Like its congeners Labidochromis caeruleus and Labidochromis chisumulae, it targets small crustaceans, insects, and insect larvae that it extracts from the crevices, pockets and debris piles among the rocks — microhabitats that the broader-mouthed mbuna species of the same reef cannot easily reach. The pointed, procumbent front teeth allow it to probe narrow gaps and lever out prey; the lower pharyngeal bone described in detail by Oliver in 1975 suggests a capacity to process hard-shelled invertebrates such as small snails or crustaceans, though the diet has not been formally analysed by gut-content study for this species. The IUCN habitat-and-ecology note describes the diet as 'insects and crustaceans,' consistent with the known genus pattern. FishBase places Labidochromis near trophic level 2.7, appropriate for a small invertivore foraging on benthic macroinvertebrates. In the aquarium the species readily accepts most prepared and frozen foods; as with other mbuna the standard guidance applies: keep the diet varied and include a substantial share of vegetable matter to prevent obesity, and avoid high-protein-only feeding that can precipitate bloat.
Mating
Labidochromis textilis is, like all known members of its genus, a non-territorial forager for most of the year. In the wild, Labidochromis males defend only a small cave among the rocks during the breeding season rather than holding a large territory continuously; females move freely through the habitat. Spawning is initiated when a male encounters a ripe female, leads her to his cave, and courts her there with lateral displays. In the aquarium, captive Labidochromis show notably more territorial behaviour than their wild counterparts, with dominant males defending caves against other males of the same species. Aggression is low compared with most mbuna genera — this mildness is a large part of the genus's appeal to aquarists keeping mixed Malawi community tanks. Multiple males can coexist in a sufficiently large, well-furnished aquarium if introduced simultaneously, each with access to a cave. As in Labidochromis caeruleus, the species is believed to be polygynous, with no lasting pair bond; a single male is likely to fertilise the eggs of multiple females through a season. Sexual selection appears to operate primarily on male colour intensity rather than on territory size or aggressive fighting.
Breeding
Labidochromis textilis is a maternal (ovophilous) mouthbrooder, consistent with all confirmed members of the genus and with the broader mbuna tribe. Following courtship, the female deposits a small clutch of eggs, takes them into her mouth almost immediately, and then picks up milt shed by the male — drawn to the egg-spot markings on his anal fin — fertilising the clutch in her buccal cavity. She then carries the developing embryos and larvae in her mouth, fasting for most of the incubation period. Incubation in Labidochromis at typical Lake Malawi temperatures (75–82 °F) takes approximately three weeks, after which she releases free-swimming fry. Clutch sizes in the genus are small; for the closely related Labidochromis sp. 'Hongi,' aquarium observations by Knabe (1992, cited in Konings 2016) recorded broods of 7–18 fry, and this range is considered typical of Labidochromis. Labidochromis species are described as semelcavous: once the fry are released they are not taken back into the mother's mouth, or only very briefly on the first day, and fry-guarding females have not been observed in the wild. No clutch count or detailed breeding observation specific to Labidochromis textilis has been published. In the aquarium the species breeds freely under standard Malawi conditions: hard, alkaline water at 75–81 °F, a cave-rich rocky setup, and a ratio of at least two females per male to reduce harassment of brooding fish.
In the aquarium
Labidochromis textilis is rarely seen in the trade — it surfaces occasionally through specialist Malawi importers, sometimes labelled 'Labidochromis Exasperatus,' and is more likely to be found in the tanks of serious mbuna collectors than in general fish shops. Its scarcity in commerce is no reflection of difficulty; it is genuinely easy to keep by mbuna standards and would suit any aquarist already familiar with Lake Malawi cichlids. A tank of 47 in (roughly 55 US gal) is a workable minimum for a single-species group; a 150-cm tank gives considerably more room to manage the mild male-to-male posturing that develops in a species colony. The decoration should be Lake Malawi rocky: dense stacks of limestone or slate forming a broken ridge of caves and overhangs along the back and sides, with an open sandy foreground. Smooth substrate or fine sand is fine; this species does not dig aggressively. Unlike some mbuna that claim and patrol large rock territories, Labidochromis of all species are comparatively relaxed about space, and a well-furnished aquarium lets a male hold a single cave without constant conflict.
Water chemistry must mirror the alkaline, hard conditions of Lake Malawi's east-central coast: pH 7.8–8.6, temperature 75–82 °F, and carbonate hardness ideally in the range of 10–20 dKH. Many keepers achieve stable chemistry with a coral-sand substrate or crushed coral mixed into the filter media; dolomite or Malawi buffer salts work equally well. Tap water high in calcium carbonate often needs no adjustment at all. Avoid any significant softening or acidification — the fish will tolerate brief deviations, but sustained low pH or soft water suppresses colour and immunity. Regular partial water changes of 20–25 % weekly are more important for this species than for many cichlids because an accumulation of dissolved organics is one of the primary triggers for Malawi bloat, an often-fatal internal bacterial or protozoal condition that is the single most common husbandry failure in mbuna keeping.
Diet in the aquarium should be varied and tilted toward plant and invertebrate-based foods. A high-quality spirulina-based flake or mbuna pellet as the staple, supplemented with frozen mysis, frozen daphnia, and occasional blanched vegetable matter, closely mirrors the invertebrate-picking foraging of the wild fish and helps prevent the fat-liver and bloat problems linked to consistently high-protein mammalian-based foods. Beef heart, which appears in older hobbyist literature, is best avoided entirely for mbuna. Vitamin-enriched frozen foods, Artemia nauplii for fry and small adults, and occasional gut-loaded live invertebrates all suit this species well.
As tankmates, Labidochromis textilis tolerates other Labidochromis species reasonably well — the genus is among the most community-compatible of the mbuna group. Mixed-Malawi communities that include other comparatively mild mbuna (Iodotropheus, Cynotilapia, Pseudotropheus acei) can work in a spacious, broken-up aquarium, but care is needed: any co-habitant substantially more aggressive will displace this species from caves and suppress its feeding. It should not be mixed with highly aggressive mbuna such as large Melanochromis or dominant Pseudotropheus species unless the tank is very large and the ratio of hiding spots is generous. Keep one male per tank unless the setup is large enough for each male to hold his own cave with a clear visual break between them; a ratio of two to three females per male reduces harassment of brooding fish.
Breeding in captivity is straightforward. Under the conditions described above, a well-conditioned group will spawn without much prompting. The female carries the clutch for approximately three weeks at 77–81 °F; clutches are small, genus-typically in the range of 7–18 fry, so expect modest numbers rather than the large releases seen in some cichlid groups. To protect a brooding female, some keepers move her to a species tank or a fine-mesh breeder box for the last week of incubation. Fry released at the free-swimming stage accept crushed flake and nauplii immediately. First-generation fry can be difficult to sex until juvenile patterning matures at around six months; males become visibly more boldly patterned well before they approach adult size.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Labidochromis textilis as Least Concern, most recently assessed on 22 June 2018 by Ad Konings and Jacqueline Kazembe (reviewer Jos Snoeks). The justification is brief but solid: the species has a wide distribution within its endemic lake and no major widespread threats have been identified. The assessment is a revision of an earlier 2006 Least Concern listing, also by Konings. The species is collected occasionally for the ornamental fish trade, where it is sometimes sold under the trade name 'Labidochromis Exasperatus'; the assessment characterises this collection as rare, and aquarium demand is insufficient to constitute a population-level concern. The one specific threat identified is sedimentation — agricultural and forestry runoff causing soil erosion and sediment loading into the shallow intermediate-zone habitats the species occupies. This pressure is consistent with broader lake-wide trends documented in basin reviews: the Lake Malawi/Nyasa/Niassa catchment is experiencing accelerating sedimentation, nutrient loading, shoreline degradation, and warming surface waters linked to regional climate change and deforestation in the watershed. For a species of the intermediate rocky zone, where cobble and rock-sand mosaics are progressively smothered by silt, this is a genuine long-term threat even if it does not yet rise to a threatened category. The species' absence from Malawi proper (it is confined to Tanzanian and Mozambican shores) means it falls outside the primary regulatory frameworks of the Malawian fisheries authority, though Lake Malawi is managed as a shared resource under the Lake Malawi/Nyasa/Niassa Catchment agreement. It carries no CITES listing.
